The CPU is around 20% faster but the screen is garbage. When you consider that the screen is something you will always be using that's something you really don't want to compromise on if possible.
A FHD screen is so much better for productivity. 1366x768 should be banned.
The AMD chip also has a better iGP for gaming.

It's not difficult.
Download Windows 10 x64 ISO. Create boot able media. Open bottom panel. Remove HDD. Insert SSD. Boot from media. Install Windows. Sorted.

Otherwise pay the extra for a factory fitted SSD.

I bought this laptop when it was on offer earlier in the year. Out of the box it was a bit slow but a clean install of Windows 10 (without the HP bloatware) sorted that! For the price and spec I'd say its a great everyday bit of kit!

Hi. Me neither, but after trying 3 caddy's and 2-3 drives (from 2Tb down to 120Gb - the last being the only one that worked), i contacted HP who told me that only 256Gb and below is supported in that bay

8 May 17 #64
Curious whether people were able to replace the ODD with a drive larger than 256Gb...that port doesn't seem to take it and HP were under the impression because it was a lower spec laptop it can't handle over that capacity in that slot

Does anybody know if it is possible to upgrade the RAM on these? I can't find any tech spec for the mainboard HP 81F9 67.37 anywhere, though CPU-Z seems to show that there is a second memory slot inside. Has anyone opened it up and had a look or know what the max memory size is? I'd be hoping to stick another 8GB inside to bring it to 16GB, unless 32GB is a possibility.

Also, how the hell do you get to the BIOS? As soon as I switch it on I get the HP Windows loading screen. Thanks!

Seems it was an offer before Christmas at £299 and fair to say reviews are mixed. Was thinking about a bit more cash and going for a HP Pavillion HD / i7 / 2TB for £549 @ PCWorld

if your planning on keeping the 2tb as storage then that would go in the ODD bay and the SSD would go in the HDD place,
so yes you need a caddy

Oh that's a shame. I've just been into JL to have a look. They didn't have it in store but there are over 400 in their distribution centre. I'm just wondering whether it's slightly too big for my son and he might be better off with a 14" screen. Anyone seen any deals for these?

What's the benefits of swapping both round instead of just replacing the optical with the SSD?

I've not tinkered with computer hardware for several years so a bit out of date with it but isn't it straightforward to swap the boot order in bios on a laptop like you would a desktop pc?

Are there any issues getting an SSD to fit in place of either the HDD or optical drive in terms of either size of the drive or connector type?

can anyone please confirm its not a big disassembly to replace optical drive with a SSD
LankyChris to shonkygeeza
10 Jan 17 #12
Ditto. Are we talking an accessible opening of some sort, just undo a free screw's, swap over and it's done. Or are you taking the case apart to get in?

Also would doing this void the warranty? Presumably one of the advantages of buying from JL is for the 2 year standard, but not if you immediately void it by changing it to ssd.
WalkableBuffalo to shonkygeeza
10 Jan 17 2 #16
Do you mean the hard drive or the optical drive?
Because removing an optical drive is literally undoing one screw and pulling out the bay. You buy a replacement caddy from eBay, put your new hard drive or SSD in and slide it back in
Removing the hard drive just involves taking off the bottom plate with one screw and swapping the hard drive, there are no warranty stickers
Here's the picture from before I returned mine
http://i.imgur.com/YfUWXMX.jpg
K1LLER_HORNET
10 Jan 17 2 #15
It's very straight forward. You'll have to get a drive caddy to hold the hard drive in the optical drive slot.
I'd recommend you put the storage drive in place of the optical disk drive (ODD) to preserve boot order/minimise issues.

Make a backup image of the existing boot drive. Create Windows installation media. Remove HDD. Remove ODD. Install SSD in place of HDD. Install HDD in place of optical drive. Affix ODD bezel. Install Windows/restore image.

CPU comparison with an i5-6200u, which seems to be in a lot of laptops around this price range:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2848&cmp[]=2556

The A12 gets a slightly higher overall score but is slower on single threaded use than the i5.

Here's a review of a similar machine: Click me

Looks like a very good buy to me.
The display is SVA so in between TN and IPS. More USB 3.0 ports would be nice.

Swap out the HDD for an SSD.
Buy a 2.5" USB 3.0 enclosure and you've got a 2TB backup drive worth around £60. Or remove the optical drive for the best of both worlds.
