Ditto, I am really hoping they are the coolest way to mash potatoes...

You can completely pull them apart. If you then do this with another figure too you can 'mash' them together however you like. So you could have a Stormtrooper head, Darth Vader body and Ewok legs. My daughter has a quite a few of the Marvel Superhero versions of the mashers and she seems to enjoy making new characters using bits of all of them.
