This is £50 below the price that it was released at. Looks like a good bit of gear and it reviews well. GPD are an honest manufacturer who don't always get their hardware right on the first iteration, but are quick to release fixes. It might be a bit of a gamble with this, but if it pans out then it's a great deal.

No import tax if you select free shipping. They do some kind of yodel switch so you won't get hit but you will have to wait about 2 weeks.
Very worrying about the deleted v2 comment on their site. Makes me wonder where the V1 stock they could be sending is coming from. Hopefully not previous returns. Until it's cleared up I would warn people not to order from them

Mine came setup with Admin user so reset it, note to anyone else doing a factory reset - it takes a LONG time, over 2 hours!!
so after asking on reddit, it seems that the matte lid is the same as the rest of the body, while the older glossy lid is shinier than the body. this means I have a matte lid, 8700 cpu and a Samsung drive. who knows what revision I have.

interesting but still crazy confusing. i wonder if the 8750 with Samsung EMMc is actually old stock from last year that they are pushing out again. the Samsung EMMc was in the V1. Gearbest site is a mess at the moment, they have the device listed twice with two different price points so its hard to know what you will actually end up with. The difference between the 8700 and 8750 is almost nothing apart from a slightly updated GPU core. In all other respects they look identical.

Sucks with the tax :-( Think I may be getting V1 as well then, ah well if it works fine then i'll be happy for £258. Will be a nightmare returning to Gearbest :-(

yeah looks like it, and without me having clarified directly, and with what's now showing on the Q&A, I'm not too hopeful. still impressed with the v1 so far. unfortunately I had to pay £20 import tax to DHL, had to use DHL they said because of my address in Northern Ireland
from what i can tell they were using the 8750s last year but discontinued and went back to the 8700 due to technical issues. There are a number of youtube videos showing inferior performance from the 8750 despite it being technically superior on paper.
Looks like they ran out of V2 and sending what they have left of V1. Hmm

actually this looks really suspicious. The list of Q&A now says on Feb 10th that its not the new version but previously there was a question in January which said it was the new version. The January question seems to have been deleted unless i'm missing something. I've pasted it below.

they are essentially the same unit in terms of overall specification of cpu/ram etc. i believe the EMMc in the v2 unit is actually a bit slower but its imperceivable. The keyboard and buttons is where most of the improvements have taken place from what i have read. Not sure what to advise as i have never used a V1
sorry to hear that. As you say the V2 have a matt finish and the EMMc is from Toshiba. it does sound like a V1. send them a message to see what they can do

I've not had as much time as i'd hoped. However i have installed the latest windows insider build and that's gone on fine. I have also attached a microsoft bluetooth mouse and a bluetooth keyboard from logitech both of which have work seamlessly. I have also attached a usb 3 1Gb ethernet dongle with extra usb 3 ports and again that's worked fine. office 2016 installed fine as well.
ive now installed the GPDWIN Arcade files and it works really well. Games are all old but they play really well. I've downloaded some other bits that are related and will install these later. Really liking this little system so far.

I haven't installed Fraps but can tell it's over 30. I didn't change anything. It's vanilla Skyrim original not remastered with no mods. It scanned and defaulted to native screen resolution low settings.

10 Feb 17#82
Hmm... did you change something specific in the settings? Do you know around how many FPS it's running at?
GPD WIN review
This guy did a really good/long review and his view was quite different:
"Skyrim, on the other hand, was almost a disaster. Framerates barely went above 15 FPS, even during cutscenes. Actually it was during cutscenes that the system crawled the most. That said, Skyrim’s default “Low” settings are largely unoptimized for low settings, and there are reported successes in running the game on meager hardware, though the process is a bit more involved. "
Do you need to open the console (ie, lose the warranty), for checking that?
Are there any other differences that we could check to make sure is the latest model? or to ask a specific seller to check for us if we buy in a different place?

 nice one
Tried Skyrim out. Handles great on 720p low. Nice smooth frame rate and controls well. The triggers are actually really cool cos you can hit both on either side with one finger, one L1 with finger tip and L2 with lower down part of finger. Actually makes combat easier as you don't need to move fingers to another trigger for shouts.
Gets quite toasty on bottom when gaming though. I think I need to turn up the fan.
Overall really pleased. Build quality a lot better than I expected and much more powerful than my Linx Vison 8 tablet which chugged Skyrim at about 23 fps

That video is hilarious. Looks like such a con. Makes me wonder how they got so many backers on kickstarter. Do they keep the money after they cancelled it?
I see... I was thinking that even if it becomes true, the analog sticks by the edge have to make it quite un-user friendly.
I didn't like the controllers of the Smach Z, but not sure if they'll be good for playing old retro MAME games or some titles like Castlevania 2 PC version, etc.

Have you guys heard anything about this device? as in... is there a chance that it might become true? Looking for 8GB RAM, Full HD, etc...
yes, from the dingoonity forums, the GPD Pocket is going to be mostly a repackaging of the Win; it's a fairly niche device so I imagine GPD will be very keen to recoup their investment. http://boards.dingoonity.org/gpd-windows-devices/
more modern architecture, more processor features and likely to run linux well.

Nice one, thanks! I'm so tempted by this... I'll read a few reviews later to see what games are supported with the Intel GPU, I think it was around series 400?
My current mini-PC has got series 530 and it's played everything I've tried so far (other than Street Fighter 5 - which comes with all defaults max out!). It was kind of playable even turning things down, although I didn't like the game so I didn't play it much, but I think this will run games in a playable mode more than some people think.

Yep these kind of machines seem to be a thing of the past. The new chips look to prioritise 10 inch and above. A good article detailing the death knell: http://www.umpcportal.com/2016/04/intel-kills-our-chips/
I don't know about that Smach Z though. If it's not vapourware then the AMD chipset may be a good choice if AMD can get some parity cpu wise with intel
I would treat that Smach Z with a huge tub of salt though. Their facebook page hasn't been updated since last November so I reckon it's a pig in a poke
Sadly Intel have discontinued the Atom range of CPUs which will probably kill off affordable gaming portables. It's a shame as they were just starting to get to the stage where they could do a surprising level of gaming.

was just about to buy a surface pro 2(again) when this came up. discount means i can try it and sell it if i dont like it without losing loads. surface pros are brilliant for portable gaming, but with this being smaller and all in one, could be exactly what i need for downtime at work without drawing attention. if i can get overwatch and another online fps going well on it, i may postpone the switch purchase til later!
scroterot
29 Jan 17#47
This is niche and I'm glad manufacturers are still taking risks with mobile gaming. I currently play a few old games on my surface pro 2 that I bought for £250 2nd hand. I plug in a wired 360 controller for games like Skyrim, Fifa 13 and just cause 2. The reason I would choose the surface over this is screen size, reliability, battery and general tablet/laptop functionality. I appreciate the GMD is much more portable, but don't think the experience would be as good. If I didn't have a surface, I would probably get the Nintendo switch instead. For someone out there this is the perfect gadget.

Any MAME emulator is fine, any Dreamcast emulator should be fine. Not sure about Gamecube but you can run Dolphin for Wii fine, if you really want to then get the Ishiiruka branch Dolphin builds as they apparently run better. PCSX2 is different per game, you can get some games to run at good speed whilst others are a bit slow. God Hand runs at about 40 fps the last time I tried.
If you're not emulating then see what the guy above said, it can run some pretty good stuff. Skyrim can run if you turn down some settings, I believe Fallout 4 can as well.

28 Jan 171#45
Also the Win is a lot more powerful than a lot of people realize... i've been happily playing Mirrors Edge at 720p all week at a stable 30fps. To think we're living in an age where we can have a portable version of Mirrors Edge is freaking crazy! But it did drain the battery quick... to play from level one to midway through level three on 50% brightness used up about 20% battery.

I've got the XD and the Win, they're both fantastic  The XD won't run Gamecube, and i've had some trouble getting Dreamcast running on there (compatibility isn't the best), so if you want the newer stuff then GPD Win all the way. However, the XD is a far more 'comfortable' setup since it's running from an Android OS instead of a Windows desktop. The battery life on that thing is *insane* too.

This uses Windows 10, XD runs in Android. Windows has a few more emulators that Android doesn't have i.e. PS2, Saturn, Gamecube, Wii, it can also run Steam and older PC games that come with it.
You could play Diablo 2 in your pocket if you really wanted to.
To anyone interested in this, don't expect to be playing modern games on this but perhaps check out Low Spec Gamer stuff if you really want to. Intel hasn't released Vulkan drivers for this chipset yet, but if they do then it will be great but I wouldn't hold your breath.

27 Jan 17#26
Just for those who are tempted, it's worth noting that it uses onboard graphics (i.e. a component of the CPU) as opposed to a GPU and it's only got 4gb of DDR3 RAM. So whilst it says it's a Windows gaming device, it's going to seriously struggle to cope with anything new and high intensity (if at all) - have a look at some Youtube videos for an indication of framerate drops.
Was just the little things that I couldn't get on with - like the small non-HD screen allied with small menus on games. Everything was a bit of a faff.
It gets really hot under load too - there is a fan to control this, but remember it's a handheld.

I quite fancy a bit of Titanfall on it though: https://youtu.be/rVl0XhwKubw

I've got one of these, it won't play everything at 60fps but if you're happy compromising there are so many enjoyable games. I've been playing fallout new vegas (sticks mostly, using keyboard for console sometimes), trackmania turbo and the binding of isaac rebirth on it. Tried Elite Dangerous which worked but I couldn't get the hang of the controller controls, might be okay for cargo runs. GTA 5 runs well enough. The Witcher 3 was not happy, 1fps at lowest but native resolution rising to 7fps at 800x600.

Had one of these but sold it. As an exercise in awesomeness it lives up to its billing, but it's not as easy to game on as the GPD XD (which is my favourite gadget) and it's a bit small to use as a laptop substitute, so it's sits uncomfortably in between the two and thus without an enormous amount of uses - especially at the price.
That being said I paid more for it than this

This is £50 below the price that it was released at. Looks like a good bit of gear and it reviews well. GPD are an honest manufacturer who don't always get their hardware right on the first iteration, but are quick to release fixes. It might be a bit of a gamble with this, but if it pans out then it's a great deal.

Yeah the first release version had some issues but this is v2 release Jan 10th so hopefully it's ok. I held off ordering until could get this v2. I'd be tempted to get a low-power laptop / 2-in-1 tablet with a separate controller or if size is the most important factor, one of GPD's Android devices.

If only the sticks clicked. Otherwise I think I'd have one

Interesting. The

This thing looks awesome, as you said, very niche! But awesome. Not sure I would risk that amount of money on a Gearbest purchase though, especially something that you'd be liable to want to use the warranty on :disappointed:

Very worrying about the deleted v2 comment on their site. Makes me wonder where the V1 stock they could be sending is coming from. Hopefully not previous returns. Until it's cleared up I would warn people not to order from them
I ordered something from USA recently and had to pay over £120 to have it delivered due to the import/custom tax :disappointed:
OP says his has a matte lid which points to it being the new revision... would prefer the z8700 to be honest unless they have definitely ironed out the original issues with the z8750.

Question:
GPD released a new version of this device on the 10. of January 2017 with a new firmware, better buttons and keyboard. Is this the new version?

Hello Tkon,
Yes, it's the new version.
Thank you for your support and inquiry.
here is a youtube video on the V2. i don't think it helps much but maybe worth a look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sc8ZtHy1ZoM
ive also downloaded GPDWIN Arcade which i'm going to try and install over the next couple of days, time allowing http://www.open-consoles.com/t10452-gpd-win-arcade-v2
ive now installed the GPDWIN Arcade files and it works really well. Games are all old but they play really well. I've downloaded some other bits that are related and will install these later. Really liking this little system so far.

as well as the hitherto mentioned Dingoonity boards

i ordered mine on the 23rd of January. Shipping was long due to the chinese new year. it wasn't shipped until the 2nd Feb.
Edit: you can check Emmc brand by going into device manager (left click windows button) and look for properties on the storage drive
Tried Skyrim out. Handles great on 720p low. Nice smooth frame rate and controls well. The triggers are actually really cool cos you can hit both on either side with one finger, one L1 with finger tip and L2 with lower down part of finger. Actually makes combat easier as you don't need to move fingers to another trigger for shouts.
Gets quite toasty on bottom when gaming though. I think I need to turn up the fan.
Overall really pleased. Build quality a lot better than I expected and much more powerful than my Linx Vison 8 tablet which chugged Skyrim at about 23 fps
200Gb Micro SD card works fine in it to supplement the inbuilt 64GB Storage. Can always add more via the USB3 port.
Bluetooth microsoft mouse works fine too.
Going to install skyrim to see how it handles with a game
That video is hilarious. Looks like such a con. Makes me wonder how they got so many backers on kickstarter. Do they keep the money after they cancelled it?
I didn't like the controllers of the Smach Z, but not sure if they'll be good for playing old retro MAME games or some titles like Castlevania 2 PC version, etc.
On a side note, do you guys know if sometimes one is charge import tax from GearBest stuff? as that'd be another £50 on top...

Indiegogo campaign is supposed to be up this month, don't think they'll go with the Apollo Lake due to the cost difference.
https://liliputing.com/2017/01/gpd-pocket-will-7-inch-touchscreen-laptop-windows-ubuntu-support.html
and that GPD will adopt the new Apollo Lake atoms, rather than the Cherry Trail in the Win. For example
http://ark.intel.com/compare/95592,93362
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2506&cmp[]=2886
more modern architecture, more processor features and likely to run linux well.
My current mini-PC has got series 530 and it's played everything I've tried so far (other than Street Fighter 5 - which comes with all defaults max out!). It was kind of playable even turning things down, although I didn't like the game so I didn't play it much, but I think this will run games in a playable mode more than some people think.

i have just checked the tracking number which relates to Yodel. It appears they are still waiting on the item so i'm guessing it has not arrived in the UK yet. There doesn't appear to be any other tracking information before it arrives with Yodel.
Think I will buy if i can get it for £250, any feedback on if the analogue sticks are any good or not would be appreciated too! Is there any statement that indicates this is the updated version as I can't seem to find it, Thanks :-)
http://www.umpcportal.com/2016/04/intel-kills-our-chips/
I don't know about that Smach Z though. If it's not vapourware then the AMD chipset may be a good choice if AMD can get some parity cpu wise with intel
I would treat that Smach Z with a huge tub of salt though. Their facebook page hasn't been updated since last November so I reckon it's a pig in a poke
http://ark.intel.com/products/codename/80644/Apollo-Lake?q=apollo%20lake#@All
If you're not emulating then see what the guy above said, it can run some pretty good stuff. Skyrim can run if you turn down some settings, I believe Fallout 4 can as well.

You could play Diablo 2 in your pocket if you really wanted to.
I have the first model and the prototype x8750 model, the battery is glued in. See: https://liliputing.com/2016/11/gpd-win-handheld-gaming-pc-partial-teardown.html
To anyone interested in this, don't expect to be playing modern games on this but perhaps check out Low Spec Gamer stuff if you really want to. Intel hasn't released Vulkan drivers for this chipset yet, but if they do then it will be great but I wouldn't hold your breath.
Was just the little things that I couldn't get on with - like the small non-HD screen allied with small menus on games. Everything was a bit of a faff.
It gets really hot under load too - there is a fan to control this, but remember it's a handheld.

I think we need to be realistic about it though. I think any game 2012 or earlier will be fine so Xbox 360 era backwards. I wouldn't try any new games on it but look forward to giving Dolphin GameCube and Wii emulation a go
Edit: In fact I think Gearbest use some shady forwarding company to avoid import duties. My last few items look to have been forwarded from within the UK and don't bear any duty check labels or foreign postal stamps. Not complaining but wonder what their method is. They also seem to deliver about a week after dispatch. Wonder if they dug a tunnel
Here's a vid of updated model:
https://youtu.be/Sc8ZtHy1ZoM
Went through Quidco and paid in USD - i have a fee free card so it worked out a bit less at £247ish before quidco
i paid the insurance though which pushes it up a bit, not sure if that was worth it but they seem to suggest if it goes missing they might only paypout 50% and i can't be bothered with the hassle of raising claims should that occur with my CC company.
That being said I paid more for it than this
That Smach Z is niche too... for builders who have spare mortar :stuck_out_tongue:
This one looks interesting and looks to be more powerful with the new AMD chipset but it's still in design phase:

Edit: and its built like a brick!
I'd be tempted to get a low-power laptop / 2-in-1 tablet with a separate controller or if size is the most important factor, one of GPD's Android devices.
