So does this use yours phones data and wifi? I'm assuming you can only make calls through this and not receive them? seems like it might be good if your on holiday

Maybe I've missed something here, but if you have Messenger installed on your phone, you can make free calls, free video calls anywhere?

The Android app seems to have a lot of bad reviews about poor call connection/quality, taking credit off after call ended/dropped, and credit expiring after 180 days.

Ive still yet to use my 4G when in the EU as I always get greeted by some horrendous looking prices via text message wherever I go with Tesco. Shame my si monly is so damn cheap with them moving hardly seems worth it.
Data is far more important to me than calls to landlines.. but Ill pick up the app regardless I guess..

Interesting.... checked the site and it is a little vague about roaming, just wondering of you can use this abroad to call a UK LANDline, and if so what charges would apply, and what effect on your normal mobile supplier charges? anyone???

It's a phone app that uses wifi/mobile data.

I am trying to figure it out too. Sevidently you download the app and if you select travel mode it will only use your wifi. Then call any number , except for premium rate and some 08 numbers. You only get charged if connected, and there is a 4p connection charge, then 1p per minute calls . You can top as little as £3 in store otherwise £5 up, and credit lasts 180 days.

It appears a good deal for dialing abroad. Due to the connection charge, for landline numbers you would be betters with a 3 Sim and 1p over minute. Not sure about mobile numbers. Would appreciate anyone's comments.

looks like this could be a good option when on holiday in Turkey (which falls outside Europe from a mobile company point of view!) - also likelihood is connection will be better than on Skype (hopefully)

Do any VOIP experts know if the SIP settings can be extracted so I can use the free calls on my home VOIP? Doesn't look like anything has been extracted yet. Here's hoping.

For OP and anyone else that phones to the US/Canada - Google Hangouts (IOS and Android) does it for free over wi-fi. If you've wangled a Google voice account they can phone you back too. I also use it to send/receive free SMS's to friends and family in the States.

Google voice/hangouts only works with US numbers?

If not how does one go about setting it up to make free calls?

Tesco International app does not shop up on the USA Play Store ,

Hi rally - Yes, Hangouts/Gvoice is free for North American numbers only, as mentioned in my post. It was aimed at the OP as they have family in the States.

Yes this is correct as I see it. If you set it to only use wifi, then calls to UK landlines are free, there is no charge and there is no connection charge. It appears that if you use the app and wifi, you can send text messages to UK mobiles for free, and, it looks to me like using the app allows you to send texts for free worldwide. Certainly when I looked, it is possible to send a text for free whilst using the app and wifi to a mobile registered in Eire

I have tried downloading the app from google play store on two different android phones and it wont install.

No, all international destinations are offered. For instance a call to an Irish landline is charged at 1p per minute and to an Irish mobile at 2p per minute (note that there would be a 4p connection charge. However, sending an SMS to an Irish mobile would be free and would not attract the connection charge. Further, it seems that all national and international SMS messages are free to send.

To deal with the last part of your question. You register your mobile on the app. So, when you send an SMS message it appears to have come from your mobile and so the recipient responds in the normal way. The sent SMS does not, like with some applications, appear to arrive from some third party number that is often quite expensive for the recipient to respond to.

In anticipation of your next question. Your mobile number does not need to be a Tesco mobile number. Mine isn't and the service seems to function as I have described above. Though I have not sent an international SMS, I have sent several national SMS messages and I have made several app to UK landline calls and these are free.

I guess you possibly could as it relies on wifi (so long as you set it to do so). However, I've not tried using it from overseas as yet. But I have used this app for calls to UK landlines from Morocco:

Oddly, although it appears to be a text app, I've not managed to get it to send a text but I have used it for voice calls!

I think it more likely burned the brains of the web designer, maybe you are one, might explain why you don't expect a plain and simple wysiwyg result from the off. A key landing page that just shows Afghanistan and some call prices. Oops.

Tempted to register the app if only to see if my mobile's number comes up as the originating number when I make a voice call on the app. In fact I've been hoping for a long time that 18185 which I use a fair bit would release a phone app with unified billing to the main 18185 account. This Tesco deal may mean I can abandon 18185.

Yes your mobile number will be presented as the caller line ID if you register your mobile on the app and then use it to call your landline.

Hell no html annoys me more than the humans with bad attitudes X) I did try studying it way back then changed career, thankfully, could be as recently I was told I had the eye sight of a teenager lol most probable because I've a brain with eyes like a hawk too lol, no biggie, most people would have missed a 'download' icon as a drop down menu.

That landing page is also a fail on another level - marketing. It should have had 5 example rates, some EU, some Asia etc. Then the words 'click here to see all rates/search destination/see dropdown'. Look at the equivalent cheap dialling page from say Three:

I'm in the USA and tried using this and it all seems okay, the uk landline rings and the person answers, but then it just goes dead.

Happened a couple of times now.

Shame really as this would've been really handy.

I found a 4 min outgoing cal in my iPhone 'recents' to a contact that the app created called "Tesco International Calling". 03300010254. It coincided exactly with a call I made via the app itself. I assume it's because my phone could not find a wifi signal. Strange though, the Settings in the app give no hint that it'll use anything other than wifi or mobile data to make calls!

Same thing happened to me today when I tried to use the app to call a UK landline, it then dialed a 03300010254 number and call got connected(using my mobile minutes rather that data I suppose)...so I wonder how this will work when you are abroad..has anyone else got similar experience?

I think I found the answer to my question and it looks like you will not be able to use this app from abroad without paying roaming mobile minutes chargesunless you turn on ravel mode within the app)...please see below:

The App Access Number is the telephone number that the App uses to get through to our international telephony service. This number is free to call for Tesco Mobile customers.

Can I use the App whilst roaming?

We do not recommend this as you may be charged extra for calling the access number while roaming abroad.
