Just spotted this on Twitter and ran a recent purchase through it, its worth using if you have bought a second hand phone or plan on selling one on eBay.
Not sure whether or not to believe. I've had an insurance claim on one of my devices and it doesn't show this in the report! lol

This surely sounds like someone charging you money so they can record your IMEI number and personal details...

They are all under the callcredit umbrella so expect any info you give them will be linked to your credit file which they then sell on

i understand what you saying here, but wasn't aimed at any one particular. i just mean in general. i look at a thread for laptop and its o no it's AMD and not FHD, a car and omg it's not an Audi, a phone and o no it's not an iPhone. So as i said nothing personal it's just peoples comments in general i thought the site was about helping people not making them scared to post. I hope you understand

these are not really useful but are good for peace of mind.
say you buy a phone off ebay and it later gets blocked. Paypal will side with seller unless you have report. If you have the report it sides with buyer.
used one recently when purchasing a £550 phone from an ebay powerseller. it got blocked and he refused to believe it. claimed to paypal I modified it etc.
as soon as I phoned payopal and added this as proof I won (as I should have).
the one thing checkmend should do is provide lifetime updates. If you buy a report once and the status changes after 7 days it wont update you. I don't see the point in buying multiple reports for the same phone. utterly retarded of checkmend to do so.

I really don't get this service.
if you buy something that doesn't work you return it. And if it gets blocked after you purchase it then this service wouldn't of indicated that. why spend your money on this?

Like a lot of things on this site, it may not be for everyone may be "useless" or "pointless" in someone's opinion, but if it helps one person get help or deal then to me it was worth while posting and any more after then is a bonus. If a deal is not for you then pass on and keep looking, instead of leaving comments that get people's back up. Deal is no use to me but none the less is a good idea, heat added thank you

I've used Checkmend a few times, wasn't saying this isn't a good deal, just that it's a bit pointless checking an existing, working phone as the peace of mind it will give you is false. For Checkmend prices this is a good deal. 'Not sure what the point is' on my part was more in reference to people finding that it gave them peace of mind, which is silly as this doesn't prove their phone isn't from a dodgy f#%^er, it just proves no claims of any type have currently been actioned on the device. Any blocked phones would have had a clear Checkmend report like this at the point of sale, and they never correctly flag up if a phone is contract or PAYG - Grainger Games used to hand over the CheckMEND report with their devices and every SIM locked device I bought indicated it was not part of a contract, as have the ones I have sold - even though they clearly were. Checkmend on the high street is simply a means of shops looking proactive in avoiding stolen goods and also makes it easy to check a device if someone comes in and claims it has been blocked.

It won't work after six months as PayPal cover only lasts till then. Credit card should work though. The police don't take this sort of fraud particularly seriously in my experience.
After six months though, the only type of blocking that will occur is for non-payment of bills, which *does* happen (despite what others may say on here).

If it's so pointless then why is it the industry standard? Seriously some people will complain about anything... it was expensive at £2.99 but 99p is reasonable and it's worth it to see things like if it was 'ever blocked', still in contract or to prove that the reason you have no signal is because of a blacklist and not a hardware fault because then you can take appropriate action with actual proof. It also shows good faith at point of sale, which is about all you can do.

It's the industry standard because shops all use it to 'cover their ****' and make it look like they're making an effort to avoid buying stolen goods. If I took a phone that I have on contract and that I have insured through Phonesafe into Game I could sell it no problem - none of the flags on Checkmend would show up.

All that stuff is BS - it ticks those boxes if it can't find reference to it, not because they are NOT subject to the indicated things. I've sold my contract phones to Grainger Games etc and all those ticks have applied, even though they weren't true.
It's simply assumption on Checkmend's part.
Thank you for your efforts though

My understanding was that service providers don't block a handset for non payment of bills/contract but only if it has been obtained fraudulently (and of course if it has been outright stolen), they block the sim card so no more calls.

not directly relevant to this post but linked and fyi is that one of the databases that is checked is the immobilise database - a personal property register. You can join for free and register everything you own that has a serial number, if it gets stolen and the police come across it (search warrant, stopping a [email protected] in the street with an iPhone 7 etc) then this is the database they check to reunite it to you.

You have to be a bit of a rubbish thief to sell your phone, be patient enough to wait 6 months while still paying your insurance policy to only then block it for a payout. Most blocks occur within 2-3 months because some idiot took out a £70/month contract to get the latest iPhone when they couldn't afford it and needed some quick cash, still fraudulent but more because the network blocks it due to non-payment than direct insurance fraud.
Thanks I couldn't find a free one after searching for a long time, they don't advertise well.

Never buy several hundred pound phone of gumtree / eBay. Scam easily .... They sell it ... wait a month report it stolen .... provider blocks it.. by then PayPal won't refund get involved and you phone is now a brick with little recourse

You go to the police and eBay refunds you or PayPal. Both take it very seriously and provide the contact details to the police as it's one insurance fraud. Two fraud against you.

Not sure I follow the logic of this as I have bought iPhones on eBay. As you long as you pay by Credit Card or PayPal you have a record of the transaction. If someone decides to claim their phone was stolen after they have sold it they are committing fraud. With a record of the transaction you can easily demonstrate that you purchased the phone and the sellers claim that the phone was stolen becomes a fraudulent claim in the eyes of the network and the Police. I have made a claim to PayPal in the past with a blocked phone and everything was settled fine.

How does this site get access to the network providers' database? IMHO that list is not publicly available. I think it's a fake but any explanations welcome.

Yes that is fair enough based on the seller wanting to rip you off but for genuine people who want to know the history of the phone that they are buying or selling then this is worth the 99p, just for contract status or the unlocked status to show a seller or buyer?

I agree with the person making the statement. Your purchase 'was all good' today, what about in 3-6 months time when the phone has been reported stolen and blocked? Only then will your report show any red checks and unfortunately it's too late. So as someone posted the report is pointless until it's too late and you've already been scammed. No scammer will block the phone before trying to sell it for it to show up in this search.

I honestly don't get the point of these. They don't tell you anything meaningful - it can't tell you that a device is subject to an insurance contract for example. The only thing it will tell you is that a device was subject to an insurance claim AFTER it gets blocked.
It's all just utterly pointless IMO, unless you want to clarify that your device is definitely blocked. It certainly won't tell you if a device you're buying is from a credible source - it doesn't even tell you if it's a contract or PAYG device.
