BT are hiking their Broadband and Calls packages by £2.50pm. Contract changes mean you have a window to cancel your contract even if you're within the minimum contract period.

BT is a terrible service provider, with Broadband outages often and terrible customer service.

I have gladly jumped on this opportunity and called today (Here is the call centre number 0800 783 1401) to cancel, I said I wish to cancel my BT services because of your price hike and the poor service I've had with BT, I understand I have 30 days from this period to cancel my contract penalty free, the adviser "yes that is correct I can certainly do this for you" they will try and sell you another deal at a better price which may be useful if your happy with your service, but I'm not and the market is very competive if you look on uswitch you can get a lot more at a cheaper price.

So you can get a retention deal if you ring up to quit on this basis?
Cos I'm perfectly happy with the service (not had an outage in 6 months in the new place...) but wouldn't mind saving a few quid...

Yes I called up in mid contract on this basis of price hike and that I wasn't happy with BT before I confined my cancellation they tried to offer me a better Broadband package at a better price than I was paying obviously you have to sign up to another 12 month contract again.

I wonder how those that have paid for their line rental saver will be affected if they wish to cancel? Will remaining months be refunded?

I'd be all for cancelling but who do you go to? As long as you have a discounted rate with BT I find their broadband package hard to beat. Plusnet would be an ideal migration but the disappointing upload speeds put me off on their 40/2 package

I came from Virgin to BT and now out of contract.
Have been looking around but nowhere beats BT for upload speeds, including Virgin.
I get 60-62Mb down 18-20Mb up.

No outages in 15 months either.

Kinda stuck finding similar service cheaper elsewhere.

According to moneysavingexpert.com, you will not get a refund for the unused line rental if you paid it in advance

I received the email today about £2.50 infinity price rise only. I'd leave but I've paid line rental saver advance which I don't think they refund. Seems like I'm stuck unless I take a hit on the line rental but I'd rather not.

From what I've read elsewhere, they will give a refund.... but you have to fight for it.
The specific point to argue is from here:

https://www.ofcom.org.uk/about-ofcom/latest/media/media-releases/2013/protection-for-consumers-against-mid-contract-price-rises

If you don't get your line rental refunded, cannot transfer it, and thus have to pay again to a 2nd provider, then you're being penalised.

I Signed up to have all my mail by email with BT to help the environment so i recieved my email explaining the price hike today. But before I posted this I checked and all of there Broadband and call packages and all are increasing so everyone has the right to cancel within 30 days before these hikes, regardless of receiving a email/letter. (But you will eventually recieve one anyway as it against OFCOM rules for them to increase prices without notification).

Only swapped over a couple of months ago, and paid my line rental in advance. Fantastic broadband in comparison to what I had with talktalk, so I'm sticking with them until the end of my very discounted package ends , besides which would they want my £100 topcashback and £100 pre paid credit card back if I left after 8 weeks

Market doesn't seem that competitive to me. I am with virgin and in my opinion pay too much. After they recently upped prices, Bt has price hikes and bad rep, sky has price hikes and bad rep, all the small companies have poor broadband. It seems like you can only jump from rubbish to worse now.

Ditto. Not had a problem with them. Latest Home Hub is pretty good (multiple devices connected to it). Been with them for 8 years, negotiating each time. Will use this increase to negotiate again. Can get slightly cheaper broadband elsewhere, but I also have heavily discounted BT Sports in HD (received on Sky).

Perhaps in your experience, I've found them absolutely fine, far better than TalkTalk.
Bilbo1968
31 Jan 17 #28
For me BT have the best fibre service my speed is always 68-70mbs download speed. So the price is going up, that's life. Everything does. Why would I want the hassle of moving for a couple of quid a month? Really easy to moan about providers but they are all a pain to deal with in my experience and I'm more then happy with BT - fancy that.
MeneerSmith to Bilbo1968
31 Jan 17 #40
On the price point, I have 80mb fibre+line with TalkTalk at £32.70, after 12 months with them, and BT will offer me the same for £40 going up to £47.50 after a year. A £7.30 then £14.80 difference each month is not a couple of quid a month...and yes you might have a better deal right now but it will change at some point.

edit: the speeds will be the same with sky, bt, tt , and others who use the same bt line management stuff.

General Condition 9.6
The Communications Provider shall:
(a) give its Subscribers adequate notice not shorter than one month
of any modifications likely to be of material detriment to that
Subscriber;
(b) allow its Subscribers to withdraw from their contract without
penalty upon such notice; and
(c)at the same time as giving the notice in condition 9.6 (a) above,
shall inform the Subscriber of its ability to terminate the contract
without penalty if the proposed modification is not acceptable to
the Subscriber.

Given the wording I find it impossible to believe that if they don't give back the unused line rental, they have complied with GC9.6. I've seen what MSE said and obviously on the BT forum they are keen to point out you get nothing back(BT T&C's say no refund), but that would be irrelevant if it breaches your rights elsewhere.

I think you have a perfectly good argument to get it back.

The counter argument is that you have paid a years line rental knowing they might increase prices mid contract, still seems wrong though.

Last year I nearly went for the SSE deal, but the reviews were frankly awful and a lot of comments about throttling, been with PlusNet for years, however this hike probably means they will follow suit, which will give me the opportunity to improve my deal.

BT did this last year. The reason you can cancel is the percentage that its going up. It is part of their business plan not a case of "that's life". The price you got in the sale will be available next year, but those who stay will be paying more until then when they can seem a similar deal under retention (but you have to fight for the same deal) .

If you get good service and don't think you can get the same value elsewhere then stay. After a year with them I have never experienced such a poor connection stability. Drop outs most days but I put it down to the home hub as a reset usually solved. CS is poor... On the day my connection was to take place (their timing) I rang up to ask if it was happening, "yes" was the reply, I just needed to wait until the broadband switched over at some time that day. "I don't think so" I replied, "I haven't received your router yet!" . To which a quick check showed that BT had forgotten to actually order the equipment for me! That was just the first failure including subsequent wrong bills, no BT sport, and dropouts. Having used Sky, plus net and Now TV I put them all ahead of BT. I have had zero dropouts from Now TV so a genuine improvement.

Andybro
31 Jan 17 #50
I didn't find sky difficult to leave though they do chase you a lot to try and keep you. I am now with Now TV (after thankfully sacking BT) but I presume they use the sky network. You can get it on 30 day rolling contract which might be worth it if you want to test them out . I went in for a year as I believe that if I can survive BT for 12 months then i can survive any supplier

31 Jan 17 #59
I signed up earlier this month and day after switch occurred i saw in the press that they where putting all their prices up. Seems ridiculous that they can do this when you sign a fixed contract at an expected monthly cost. I dont expect Ill get my cashback for a few months so I probably wont be able to avail of the get out clause or even renegotiate price back down to what I was expecting, as that would probably negate the qualification for the cashback and vouchers, plus maybe they could still request their equipment back if I switched so soon after signup, even if its their fault.

Certainly don't have any problems with their fibre, its more consistent at near my 52 limit than SSE ever was at supposed 76. Didn't have any problems with Talk Talk Fibre before that, but still get the occasional bogus call from scammers claiming to be Talk Talk, knowing all my details and I hold Talk Talk responsible for that.

I guess the service provided by different suppliers varies across the country which is why some hate one provider whilst others love them. I moved from BT to Plusnet to reduce costs and because of poor customer service but actual broadband speeds were fine. Everything has been fine with Plusnet so no need for me to move at the moment. That said in my view there is not so much competition now anyway.

we are with BT and service was good for over a year, took out a new contract with them because of bt tv and then service has dramatically worsened and we don't even use the bt tv. It cuts out 3 or more times a day for a couple of minutes at a time, I have complained til I'm blue in the face but have only received one refund of £10 and they state this is because of 3 or more days missing on Internet. I kept complaining but have given up as it's a total waste of time. Speed is good but annoying with the cut outs. I'm with Zen, on their 40M unlimited package*. Sure, I pay about £40 a month including line rental, but it's really a case you get what you pay for. It doesn't slow down, and customer service is excellent. I have static IPv4 and a big block of static IPv6. The supplied modem/router/Wi-Fi is good too, and none of the security risks of the BT hub.

* my phone line is too long and I only get 35M sync.

I was in the same position. I asked what line rental was for...... Well sir, it's for inbound and outbound calls.
So are you changing the price of the calls?
Yes sir we are.
So either youre not changing the price of my calls - or in leaving without penalty and having a refund.
You don't make many calls.
So you won't mind not in reading them?

In the end they offered me cancellation without penalty and a refund of line rental saver. Or credit to my account to counteract the increase in price for remainder of contract.

I'd be interested in knowing the breakdown of this, if you are able please. The best I could get out of them this morning was effectively £33.09 for Infinity 1 fibre (my max speed is 38-40mb anyway) and line rental. That's £16 for the fibre and £17.09 by paying my line rental 12 months in advance. I also have all BT Sport channels in HD on the Sky platform for a reduced fee of £9, but still not impressed overall, especially given that you have signed up to on the fibre and line rental. May try again, but I doubt they have the same "depends who you speak to" approach as Sky.

I've just been on to them and they wouldn't/couldn't better what I'm on already.

Line rental £18.99
Discount caller display & BT privacy pack £0.00
BT Infinity 1 unlimited (maximum I can get) £10.00
Unlimited Anytime Calls £8.50

Total £37.49

Told me after 24 minutes of talking call back 3 weeks before contracts due to end, 1st May as might be a good one then unless I really want to leave.

Hi Bistro13

Yes sure, bt infinity unlimited downloads upto 52mb + free weekend calls. £9 per month, down from £16.

Line rental saver paid upfront. £205.08.

Bt lite free, limited number of bt channels on tablet or phone on the bt sport app.

12 month contract.

Total yearly cost £313.08.

When i tried to haggle further she said ive got the maximum % discount for my current package so i think they offer a fixed % discount off what you currently pay.

Is the £16 for the fibre only, you then have £9 extra for the sport? Or does the £16 include the sport?

It's so frustrating because they provide the best internet speeds and the absolute worst customer service. My internet drops out regularly and costs an absolute fortune. Once my line went down for 3 whole weeks and all they offered me was £9 compensation - This was after I had already advised them that they charge me for 4 weeks service at something like £47. They failed to see how I wanted the majority of a months charges refunded and I was left without internet for something like 18 days.

Worst customer service, best broadband.

Does anyone know how a BT TV subscription charge would be affected by cancelling BT Broadband due to the price hike?

My thinking is any outstanding TV charges (for the remainder of the BT TV contract) should be written off as well, since you can't have BT TV without BT Broadband.
I only have the basic subscription, and then only so I can watch BT Sport. I can't even watch the non-Sport TV because I haven't got an aerial!
Musicrab
3 Feb 17 #105
Check you have BT TV because you can have BT sport (app) without BT TV (also note that the BT TV specific channels don't come through the aerial). When did your BT TV 12month contract start and much are you paying for it?
Edit. Ignore all that. Mse says "That means anyone with BT broadband (including all those with BT TV, as you need a BT broadband package to get it) or a BT landline can escape penalty free."

Yes, this works. I have just put my 30 days notice period in. Tried to haggle, but lowest they would go after 2 calls (2nd one with the grumpiest man alive) was £34.99pm for Infinity 1 and line rental.

I haven't signed up to anything, but Vodafone offer £23pm for their Unlimited Fibre 38, all in. I'm just nervous about getting a poor service, throttling of download speeds, Sky Q connection issues etc. Never had a problem with BT service wise, but can't justify throwing away all that cash if there are cheaper, viable options oit there.

Unless I'm missing something here (entirely possible) there's a huge price difference between BT and TalkTalk - and unless BT are prepared to do a particularly good deal there seems little point in staying with them. No doubt a load of cashback to be had on switching too!

TalkTalk: Unlimited 38mb fibre £27pm fixed for 2 years + £5 pm unlimited calls (includes line rental, caller display free) = £32pm (years 1 and 2)

BT: Unlimited BT Infinity 1 £21 pm (£28.50 after 12 months) + £18.99 line rental + £8.50pm unlimited calls, (caller display £1.75pm after 12 months) = £48.49pm (year 1 only)

3 Feb 17 #112
They will say no and stand by it. They did with me. I will be taking it further. Plenty of people on here and other forums have argued their case successfully. The T&C's for advance line rental state no refunds. OFCOM's rules state that "providers should therefore give consumers at least 30 days' notice of any such price rise and allow them to exit their contract without penalty". It could be argued that by not receiving a refund on any unused line rental, this is not without penalty. You'll have to fight for it though.

Well I sorted mine out(ish)

Infinity 1 £18.99

No phone deal.

Was going to get the BT deal from here unlimited minutes etc etc rang Tesco to get out of monthly contract explaining what I was doing and why and got a SIMO deal 1500 minutes, 5,000 texts 4Gig data for £13, suit me as make the calls I usually make on the landline.

My Tesco deal was 500 mins, 1,000 texts and 1 Gig for £12.50, so I see it as saving both ways.

If it were only a couple of quid a month more I doubt the reactions would be like they are , I'm hearing £2.50 infinity b/band , £3.50 BT Sport 49p anytime calls . Total of £6.49 a month here
Bilbo1968

rooney10
3 Feb 17 #124
To be fair the BT Sport charge of £3.50 wont come into play until August anyway (next football season). My subscription lasts until mid October so 5.5 months of £3 extra plus 2.5 months of £3.50 , total £25.25 extra in total.
For me it isn't worth fighting to get a refund on my line rental saver paid in advance.
However, I WILL be switching once my 12 months is complete.
Bilbo1968
3 Feb 17 #125
Not sure what your point is? My post was stating that I don't want to change a service I'm happy with for the sake of £2.50 a month. I'm not really bothered what other people are paying for multiple services because I haven't got them nor want them.

Hi I wanted to cancel my dads bt broadband because he has gone into a home but I was told if I did his telephone contract would renew for another 12 months. He has been in hospital since November and we have been paying for one of the most expensive packages. We are hoping to rent the flat later but the family don't want to lose the phone line immediately we also don't want to be committed for another 12 months if a tenant does move in ....any ideas. Thanks Jane

Ignore previous comment ...had to battle but they have agreed to take off broadband and anytime calls reducing bill from £43 to £19. Initially they wanted to charge to send an engineer but when I mentioned the increase in price and the contract I was asked if I had received a letter. I said I had and then they agreed to do it. Sorry to have wasted anyone's time
rooney10
3 Feb 17 #128
My point was that I'm in a similar position whereby the cost of the rise isn't worth the hassle in moving given the time left on the contract and other factors to take into consideration. I thought that I had made that point perfectly clear to be honest. Maybe you just need a helping hand with it , not a problem though I have time to spend with those that appear a little slower than others as well so its all good

I have been offered infinity 1 & line rental with weekend calls only for £25.99 p/m for 24 months or £31.50 for 18 months.

I think £25.99 is decent but I feel uneasy about committing to a 2 yr contract. Sky's £30 p/m for 18 months is only real alternative but with setup fees etc no real difference over 18 months so looks like i'll be agreeing to BT again.

Agree. Good deal if it's unlimited. Remember that you can cancel if/when they put the line rentalnor other charges up again next year.

I had another chat with them. 3rd and final attempt. It was a mutually reasonable conversation, but after several checks of his system and some light hearted banter, he seemed genuinely annoyed that he couldn't offer me a better deal than £34.99 per month for unlimited Infinity 1 and line rental.

I'm off to Vodafone or Sky. Vodafone are cheaper (£23/month or £25.72 if you average out the setup fees over 18 months), but in my experience, Sky are a barterer's dream (with a bit of perseverance). I'd much prefer to be haggling with them, when they inevitably put their price up next year (triggering the cancellation period again)

Just a heads up to anyone looking to leave BT, who uses their email service. BT no longer let you keep your email account indefinitely. After 30 days or so it will be closed, unless you pay FIVE POUNDS per month for BT Premium Mail. It used to be £1.60, which itself was a bit of a cheek, but £5 is holding people to ransom if you ask me. I'm prepared to go through the hassle of changing my email address. Sky email is for life, not just for Christmas. Vodafone don't offer an email service.

Hi, been reading all these posts. Have been on the phone to them tonight. £27.99 including line rental for infinity 1 and weekend calls on an 18'month contract.

What's confusing me is the TV option. Currently I'm on their essential package discounted to £2.70 a month. He said they don't do this anymore and their standard option was £6.00pm or he could do the entertainment plus package reduced to £6.50pm from £10pm. Do you HAVE to have a TV package with it??? Seems a lot to me. Any help appreciated.

6 Feb 17 #144
I am now seriously confused. I spoke to BT on Friday, and had it confirmed that I could leave without charge. I asked about the line rental saver - I am three months into a 12 month contract so would have three quarters of £205 unused, around £154 - and after the customer service rep checked with a manager, I was advised that the unused portion would be refunded.

Yesterday I signed up with Vodafone and last night got the "Leaving BT" email. It clearly stated that no part of the line rental saver would be refunded. I called BT this morning and was advised that this was correct - no line rental would be refunded. I then cancelled with Vodafone but am now thinking that I might have been "had".

Anyone who was advised that the line rental would be refunded had the email?

I signed up for Sky Unlimited Fibre Broadband (38mbs) and Line Rental yesterday. £30 per month for 18 months, £19.95 setup/delivery, but got £55 cashback from topcashback.co.uk (already tracking). I paid a little bit more overall than other options pit there, but A.) Sky will probably put their price up in 12-13 months time, triggering another negotiation and B.) I've found Sky quite awesome to haggle with (case in point below).

As suspected, BT are standing firm on my advance line rental not being refunded. I have around a month and a half to go, so call it £28. I called Sky back today and they agreed to credit 2 months of line rental to my account (£38) to compensate.

Been hung up on twice by their offshore support while trying to cancel - interesting retention strategy they have. Once you called and cancelled with BT, how long does the actual cancellation process take, ie how long before your new supplier can take over the service.
Bisto13
9 Feb 17 #159
I don't think there's a time limit on it and is likely to be more down to your new supplier putting things in place, i.e. setup and router delivery.

I placed my order with Sky on the 6th February. My new service starts on the 20th. Gives me time to change all of my BT email logins etc.

I got told I have until 11/03 to switch provider without penalty - so find yourself a new provider, and get them to handle everything. Job done. A tip (hopefully) for those that want to continue receiving BT Sport at a discounted rate. Mine is due to go up from £9 odds to £21.99, due to losing the Broadband linked discount. I was told today by a BT rep that if I wait until the day after my Broadband ends, then try to cancel the BT Spott (which will now be at £21.99), they will offer me a deal to stay as a BT Sport only customer. I receive it on Sky.
dm01
9 Feb 17 1 #162
Once you have called and confirmed you can switch penalty free, you should find your new supplier asap and get the switch started, you only have 30 days and if they dont complete the switch in that time you will be liable for all of BT ending contract early fees. I learned this last year when switching a relative in this situation, to SSE, they took so long to do it that BT insisted on their fees as took over 30 days, in the end they had to sign new contract with BT to get the fees waved and SSE let them out of their new contract as delay was their mistake, but only after a lot of phone calls and unnecessary stress.

TalkTalk are offering a genuinely fixed price unlimited fibre deal for 24 months at £27pm including line rental, and there's £90 TCB cashback on top.

BT can't (won't!) get anywhere near that, so we'll be parting company again. Have to say it'll be nice to be able to stick with one company for a couple of years without this ludicrous round of price increases followed by switching. TalkTalk have actually proved better than BT in my experience, so for me at any rate it's a no-brainer.

Joined BT at the beginning of october with an offer for unlimited infinity 1 with starter TV + free BT sport for £28.99pm
Got £146 Totalcashback and a £150 prepaid MasterCard from BT. They forgot to send me out a replacement router at Xmas when mine went faulty and then sent me out 5 routers in a row (these are £109 at Currys but £70 from BT)

Just cancelled a couple of days ago due to price increase.

In total I have paid them £144.95 monthly charges and £59.99 set up fees and have received £296 cashback + £545(Currys price) / £350(BT price) worth of routers
So BT paid me to have their broadband for 5 months;
@ Currys' Hub price - £636.06
@ BT's Hub price - £441.06
Without Hub's - £91.06

If that isn't a HOT deal I don't know what is!! :sunglasses::laughing:

Got stung last year when they put prices up as the email/letter stating the changes were happeningnever arrived. eventually got a discount after 3 complaint calls, BT actually raising the price even further due to errors and then 3 months of incorrect billing there after.

Spoke to them before I even got my letter/email and cancelled this time. Moving to Vodafone for Fibre connection which should give be same speeds as Infinity 2 for £28 a month (The best "Retention" deal BT offered was £39 (granted they were going to chuck tv package in with this but seeing as I never use the TV package its hardly a saving for something you wont use. From the savings of moving I could get a Netflix or Now TV subscription and still be saving).

Would I go back to BT.....Highly Doubtful, the Infinity 2 has been very good with few or no outages, however. Their customer services is shocking, Over my years with BT I have had numerous incorrect bills resulting in me having to waste time on the phone with them getting them correct it (6 Months continuous at one stage due to them trying to charge me cancellation charge for something they switched over do to a fault on the line). Also the amount of "we'll get a manager to call you back" that result in no call back is beyond a joke.

Infinity 2 - A++
Customer Service - U
Price - F- (definitely over priced compared to competition)

I am currently with BT on a £28.99 p/m deal for Infinity 1 & line rental. Contract ends in Aug.

Prices going up to £31.49 in April so contacted to see what the offers were.

Only decent one was £25.99 for infinity 1 and line rental (inc price increases) but for a 24 month period. For Infinity 2 they wanted £41 a month.

So currently debating whether to sign up for another 24 months and save £5.50 a month, or wait until contract is up in August, take hit now on £2.50 a month and look again in summer.

What is TalkTalk's capacity/backhaul/interchange like, especially at peak? Syncing at 38Mbit but only delivering 3.8Mbit would be unpleasant. e.g. Sky Fibre at 9pm on a Friday was struggling with Netflix this time last year. I haven't had similar from BT (touch wood).

I'm slightly surprised they don't offer the 52Mbit option like Sky/BT, but having to knock back to 38Mbit wouldn't be too too bad. Most important is the 10MBit uplink, and delivering on the advertised speeds.

Has anyone got any recent experience, perhaps having just moved to TT?

Anyone concerned aboit being "tied in" to a new 18 or 24 month contract should consider this... BT have increased their prices on:
1st December 2014
20th September 2015
3rd July 2016
2nd April 2017

Why is this significant? Each time, at a minimum, their LR and BB have gone up, triggering your right to leave the contract penalty fee. We're not even talking 12 months here, let alone 18 or 24. There are no guarantees that BT will increase their prices again in a similar time period, but history tells us that it is likely!
Newbold
13 Feb 17 1 #184
That £25.99pm looks a good deal. I might not have defected to TalkTalk had they offered it, but they said there weren't any 24 month deals on offer a couple of days ago (another BT lie!). They may well offer it now the switch has started, but having realised that there are all sorts of TalkTalk freebies at the moment I probably wouldn't take it.

Don't worry about the 24 month tie-in - bound to be another price increase before long which will give you a get-out.

Have you asked what the best deal they will offer for infinity 1 is?
godedd
14 Feb 17 #191
Started with me at 38.99 too. Took me 3 calls to get a better offer. They can offer infinity 1 at 25.99 so may be worth persevering.
qazsed321
14 Feb 17 #192
thanks for the response
yeah i'm happy with infinity 1, haven't had any problems and the speeds have been great so having the extra speed wouldn't be that necessary and i'd rather save the money
i did ask about infinity 1 but they said that there is currently a £15 discount on my account so they can't offer anything better as it would mean taking out a new contract and losing that discount.

i currently get infinity 1, evening & weekend calls, free bt tv (till November) and sports for £14.49 a month and line rental paid for up front so it works out to be around £32 a month. i took the offer because of the £150 cashback i got.

i told them i would think about it and that i'd call back another time.

Cracking deal, is the signup process for this online?
so if I find someone who has virgin , ask them to refer me , should the deal come up on the link they send me?

Thanks in advance

So did you have to call them 3 times ?

15 Feb 17 #195
I received the price increase email last week with an offer attached, bt infinity 2 for £33.49 (inc line rental) for 18 months.
Currently on bt infinity 1 for £28.99 although this was a 12 month offer & the price is due to go up to £44.99 next month for the remaining 6 months!!!
We have connection issues in the evenings, 3 teenagers on youtube, xbox online, etc, then myself & husband stream tv & the current internet cant seem to keep up. This usually results in 1 or 2 of us having buffering or no internet at all, will infinity 2 still have these issues??
Newbold
15 Feb 17 #196
That depends almost entirely on how far you are from the exchange or BT cabinet. If you're close, you'll see an increased speed, if not, you may not. Do a line check with BT to see the likely maximum speed.
kevandkeira
15 Feb 17 1 #197
Were only 150 metres from the exchange, the maximum we can get is 71-80mb, guaranteed 66mb minimum on infinity 2.
Just performed a speed test on my laptop, wireless connection & got speeds of 52.22 download, 8.5 upload, 29.25 ping
I've read numerous posts that the home hubs are not very good, so i'm wondering if I buy a better router would that solve our connection issues, then I can see what offer they'll give for infinity 1.
TylerDurdenUK
15 Feb 17 #198
Did you haggle for a better deal, they offered me a £1.50 discount
GingerDi
15 Feb 17 #199
The best I've seen on infinity one is £25.99 for a 24 month contract and £27.99 for 18 months.

Not been looking at infinity two so can't comment. Seems like £25.99/£27.99 is standard so shouldn't be hard to get. Good luck!
godedd
15 Feb 17 #200
I did but got through straight away and will save me £14 a month so happy to do so.
Newbold
15 Feb 17 #201
As a follow-up to this, they did indeed offer the £25.99 - but only after the switch process started. Prior to that they denied any such deal was possible. And I didn't take it, because frankly the TalkTalk deal (£27, but only £5 for anytime calls, and free caller display, call divert, call return etc) is still better. And the £27 is genuinely fixed for 18 months.

The moral? If you want the best deal out of BT you have to start the actual switch process to get it.

15 Feb 17 #202
Had the £25.99 offered to me, rang today to take it and was told by operator he couldn't provide it (even though notes on the account from previous call when offered) he stated they needed to review tapes and would take 5 days to confirm what was offered. I challenged him stating that surely the notes on the account proved what was offered and no need for someone to listen to tapes. He insisted, I asked to speak to supervisor, he came back and confirmed offer could be proceeded.

I then had to have a callback to go through it, during which when I asked to cancel BT Sport they tried to suggest I should pay £24 for end of contract, which I reminded them I didn't as it was due to price increase. They accepted it.

Got there in the end for £29.49 a month for Infinity 1 unlimited, line rental and evening and weekend calls on 24month contract. But it was hard work...

15 Feb 17 #203
Phoned on Saturday as a result of receiving an e-mail from BT, and the best they could offer was £47. That was unlimited Infinity 1 + rental + unlimited anytime calls.

So I promptly phoned Plusnet who offered me £36,49, plus the £6.99 postage for the router.

I then received an e-mail from BT, telling me that I would be charged £65 and £125, so today I called the number on this e-mail. Without any arguement or discussion, I was offered the above for £33. A fair old difference from the £47 I was offered on Saturday, so I promptly accepted and phoned Plusnet and cancelled the proposed move.

Sorted!!
TylerDurdenUK
15 Feb 17 #204
I've ordered Plusnet fibre today for £25 pm (£25 activation / setup fee) for 12 months (also £70 quidco)
qazsed321
16 Feb 17 #205
so they offered you the deal after you told them you were switching to talktalk?
that seems like such a hassle, if they have the offers available i dont see why dont save the time and offer them straight away :disappointed:
qazsed321
16 Feb 17 #206
they wouldnt even offer me £1.50 off my contract, i havent tried another call yet but i'll probably look at cancelling and moving else where

i'd happily take £25.99/27.99 a month right now but im just not having any luck whenever i contact BT:(
Newbold
16 Feb 17 #207
Yes - they only offered the £25.99 after I set the switch in motion. I'd asked for it before then, but they wouldn't/couldn't do it.

Why not set the switch going? It's a simple enough process and you can cancel it for several days afterwards if you want to. BT get notified within hours, if not immediately, and once they're aware you're off you should get the £25.99 offer. I phoned them to confirm that the Advance Line rental was going to be repaid (incorrect information in their letters and emails) and they used the call as a hard selling exercise to get me to cancel the switch. That's when the £25.99 was offered on a 24 month contract.

I liked the way they downplayed the length of the contract by pointing out that the price was bound to increase, and if it did I could use it to break the contract again.
GingerDi
16 Feb 17 #208
Keep trying ! I rang the number on this thread. When I spoke to BT previously they came nowhere near this price. Guy on the phone (Carl) said he was 'retentions' department or something similar. Might help to say you've had problems with the service. Good luck!
zedee
17 Feb 17 #209
Same treatment when I called to cancel - no offer whatsoever, other than an upgrade to Infinity 2.

I'll put in the order to TT, and call BT back to 'confirm' they've seen the switch start..... and assumedly offer an offer.

Edit: To clear a bit of confusion I had - to avoid termination charges you need to complete the switch within 30 days starting the day you ask to cancel/switch, not from when you get the letter.

I am thinking of leaving BT. I am fine without fibre as get around 11Mbps on my line. Is there any non-fibre offer available with cashback ?
Looks like either the Plusnet fibre £25/month (additional setup fee of £25) for 12 months with £70cashback. TalkTalk £27/month for 18 months with £110 cashback seems to be also good but longer contract.

My phone and infinity bb with sky comes to an end in May this year I think... Is it worth cancelling as I'm paying £17.50 all in... Are there any decent deals available even if it's not fibre as I get 12mb+ even on copper broadband....?
moh223
18 Feb 17 #212
I made a complaint, and BT requested for me to ring them. I didn't bother (too much effort) and fortunately they rang me. As I paid line rental saver in advance, as I mentioned before, they wouldn't refund the difference. So they gave Infinity 1 unlimited at £12.50 plus monthly line rental then it came to £31.49. A couple quid more than what some people were able to get but no complaints from me. Service has been quite good with only two brief outage since Jan, 2016 Hopefully it continues to be as good. 18 month contract so it might not really make a difference in the end once the line rental saver has ended depending on the monthly line rental. Next time, I won't pay the line rental saver in advance.

Agree with the posters that say you have to sign up to another provider before BT will offer a proper competitive offer to get you stay. I guess you have to call their bluff and prove that you really are going to leave.
dvs
18 Feb 17 #214
I contacted BT online as it was the 'recommended option' but they advised to call. I called and the adviser explained that his team were really concerned about the price rises and were aware that the customers would be unhappy. He then proceeded to tell me how great the BT service was, that no other provider offered 52Mb and that no one else could offer 5 million hotspots (it was a proper sales pitch). I explained that having signed up to BT's 'Biggest ever sale' just a few months earlier, I did not agree with increasing prices less than than two months after the service went live. He said he understood but went back into selling BT to me. He also tried to imply that my £100 reward card may be recalled but when I challenged he retreated and said he wasn't sure what would happened as he hadn't heard anything.

I know the increase is only £2.50 but for me it's the principle. Most companies would increase the rate after the minimum term. I proceeded to cancel the service and will probably take the Virgin £15 deal instead. I would rather stay with BT for simplicity but will be better off financially to move to Virgin give the lower monthly charge plus the BT cashback and reward.

I haven't received any email or text confirmation of notice like others have stated. I received a customer satisfaction text (which needless to say, didn't score highly).

BT have confirmed to me that I can have linerental saver refunded. It took some work though. Most persuasive argument was this link where bt staff. confirm in forum that you should get refund.

This BT price hike has turned into a bit of a farce for people....but worth be persistent with them to get a good deal. I spoke to 3 different call centres about leaving and eventually spoke to the customer retention team based in Glasgow. Told them I wanted to leave because of the hike and couldn't afford to pay almost £50 for my infinity 1 package with sports... 'I'm leaving...im leaving...im leaving...what can you offer me?!?' Long story short...Exact same package as now...but 25.99 a month for 24 months...also managed to get bt sports thrown in for only £1.75 a month too... that's over £23 saving a month....moral...just keep pushing them for a good deal...haggle!!!
Jayzone9178
20 Feb 17 #217
The trouble is more and more companies are getting into the "Rip of Customers because we can" mindset these days. If you consider that they must still be making a profit on your £23 a month to keep you a customer, they were willing to charge you over 100% more if you hadn't questioned it. So many companies these days claim "This is our best deal" but then suddenly can find a reduction.

Jo public is being treated more and more like a gullible fool by these companies which still walk away with a huge profit at the end of the day, if they can afford to give such large discounts to customers, why hike up prices in the first place?

If a company REALLY wants to keep your custom in the first place then they should be offering the best deal possible for you, and not keeping anything back for when the first offer isn't accepted.

My BT fibre and LR was switched to Sky yesterday. As a result, my heavily discounted BT Sports (on Sky) was due to go from £9pm (£4 + £5 for HD) to £26.99pm as of today.

Called to cancel. Offered and accepted:
£10.99pm for 18 months
Free HD for 12 months (monthly contract, will call again about this in 12 months)
No increase in April.

To be honest happy with the service just phoned up and recontracted for 18 months as don't want the hassel of doing this again! Internet speeds are good at 38 and that over wifi! If connected direct you get 45! BT sport channel is good with some football etc...

Din't get cards etc... But i got the price held at the current price for 52mb fibre so my price will not rise in april as does not affect new contracts taken out after the price rise annou! BT sport free for six months again even though had to re contract for the 12 months but was only 4 months in so only added 4 months on the sport

Not too keen on the 18 months but to be honest if they raise prices again i can leave penalty free!

To be honest the fibre is great never had any down time and the sport is good and i don't wanna keep changing every three months and aren't all compnaies putting their prices up! So even if i join plusnet and get a card theirs will probably rise in six months!

i am yet to call up again to change my contract because I am moving house next week so I'm not looking to cancel as I want to transfer my current number

they say I need a new line at the new address so I can either pay £130 or they have offered me deals which are not good deals (like £22 a month + line rental for infinity one and weekend calls and this price will go up after April)

any advice on what I should do?
should I try to sort the price of my contract first and then try to transfer it to the new house? or transfer it first and then try to haggle?

Anyone regarding my SIM only with BT - if i cancel the BB/Telephone, can i also cancel the mobile sim penalty free or at least keep it at the discounted rate?
