yes i'm chinese and i cringe when people think the foods that they get from westernized takeaways or supermarkets are the same as what we eat at home, which can i say is not what we eat at home :laughing: ! haha

Just remember, when your kids come home from school saying "Gong Shee Fa Choi", the school have taught them to beg for money, NOT say "Happy New Year" in PuTongGua(Mandarin).
Gong Shee Fa Choi (various spellings, just go with how I spelt it for pronunciation) means "Give me (lucky), money".
Practically EVERY Google search result makes the same mistake.
(My wife is from Guangxi province, and I lived out there for a while).

No!!!! it does not mean "give me lucky money" at all!! You ARE spreading the wrong messages to everyone reading your post and killing the beautiful meaning of this festive greeting. First of all, you mixed the words "Gong shee fa choice" from two languages - Chinese and Cantonese. I am sorry, it's not a hybrid words and it never will be. Either you say "Gong Xi Fa Cai" (Chinese) or "Gong Hei Fa Choi" (Cantonese). In both languages, the first two words have congratulation meaning. The last two words have prosperity meaning. I think you need more Chinese lesson with your wife. Lol

False information. Gong Xi Fa Chai, loosely translated, means Happy New Year.
When children do it to get ang pows (chinese red money packets), they're usually doing it for fun. Because chinese kids are usually taught to greet first before they get any ang pow money. And ang pow money is usually only given if you actually visit the house. You're not giving it to all and sundry as it's meant to bestow blessing and in a sense, give and get 'luck'.

I cringe more at all the Singaporean food dishes sold in the UK :wink: There's no such thing as Singapore Rice Noodles or Singapore Fried Rice. And most Singaporean dishes come from Malaysia anyway.
