Hi Folks, just a heads-up to other glasses-wearers out there who have to have super thin lenses due to their specific prescription.
I'm long-sighted, around +5.5, and to get even a single pair of glasses from Vision Express, Specsavers etc. I am quoted well over £100 a pair and up to £200 for designer pairs.
This is because I have to pay for their super-thin or equivalent lenses. Even when they have offers it never works out well - 2 for 1 offers require payment for the super-thin lenses on both pairs - or offers on reduced thin lenses mean full price payment for one frame with no other offers.
Well I've now discovered that ASDA Opticians permanently offer FREE super-thin lenses if requested!! And this INCLUDES their 2 for £99 designer frames. The refractive index of their FREE thin lens is just slightly worse than the 3rd level up of thin lenses from the big-name opticians (e.g. Specsavers Ultimate thin and light) - the ones that cost £90-£120 upgrade per pair.
So to be clear, if due to your prescription you require super-thin lenses, ASDA opticians include these for FREE, even as part of their 2 for £xx offers.
In my case one pair from Specsavers worked out at £180. Two of the same pairs were £99 from ASDA. As far as I can see this is a permanent offer (been on for over 6 months).
Hope this helps another long-sighted HUKDer... ASDA Opticians are a hidden gem for us!

Weird. See a few negatives. Don't match my experience. Glasses were ready in a few days. Perfect communication. High quality lenses.
To the person helpfully stating that it is Asda's normal price - yes I know stated this in my OP
If it's helped a few people I am happy, please report back any successes.
No issues with quality for me!

Good to know if a bit specific but aren't they all

Just to say, hopefully I've got this across, in Asda one can purchase TWO pairs of designer-framed glasses with super-thin lenses for less than the price of a super-thin upgrade to ONE pair at the high street opticians, roughly speaking.

Could you explain this a bit more?
"The refractive index of their FREE thin lens is just slightly worse than the 3rd level up of thin lenses from the big-name opticians (e.g. Specsavers Ultimate thin and light) - the ones that cost £90-£120 upgrade per pair."
So I'm -3.5 in both eyes.... What would this actually mean to me, compared to having my lenses from Specsavers?

Probably down to having my glasses on....
Still can't believe the price differences, I really hope a +6 or higher HUKDer sees this... I was flabbergasted that there was no charge for the ultra-thin-equivalent lenses. My quotes were like £180, £210, £190, £230... and then 2 for £99 from ASDA

Hello! I know nothing about short-sighted lenses... basically if you HAVE to pay for ultra-thin lenses then ASDA is massively cheaper - I have to because +5.5 are goggle-eyed thick beasts at the edges, like massive ten-tonne fish-bowls hanging off my face unless I get ultra thins. Turns out I've been paying extra for this for donkeys years when ASDA just include them for free if you ask! Whilst spec"savers" charge an extra £100ish!
You would know, I think, if you have to pay for super thin lenses due to your prescription.

With my astigmatatism etc my lenses end up pretty thick at the edge but apparently it is not bad enough to qualify for the super thin lenses - i.e. not everyone can get them

Yes correct. You can only get free ultra-thin lenses from ASDA opticians if you need them. Whereas Specsavers etc. charge £90-£120ish per pair of glasses extra, whether you need them or not. Presumably they trick people into getting them in some circumstances where it makes no perceptible difference.
My glasses however would be too thick to get through normal doorways without the super ultra thinnity thin super slim lenses

Oh yeah, I have to pay for super thin lenses (Apparently 'medium' thinned :stuck_out_tongue: ) But I didn't quite understand what you mean by Asda 'thinning' refractive index being worse? Surely it is still adjusted perfectly for your prescription, so how could anything be worse?
Hot deal! Just curious :stuck_out_tongue:

I was just being super specific, each optician has their own lens provider and each level of thinness has a set refractive index, and when I compared the ASDA free super-thin lenses to the Specsavers Ultimate ones, the ASDA ones has a refractive index for me that was 0.01 worse... so in other words the free ASDA ones were very nearly as thin as the thinnest Specsavers ones and far thinner than the non-thin, basic and somewhat-thin Specsavers ones

I'm..+0.75 in one and + 3.50 other with stigmatism so would be great for me. not sure if any of ours have opticians though but will check it out. Cheers op
