interested in this laptop - the model number on the website says 'Acer Aspire ES 15 ES1-571-34WU' and I can't find any reviews of this model anywhere online!! Is this still good value or better alternatives out there now?

While it's true that the benchmark scores are not particularly representative I wouldn't say people should disregard them totally. They are a useful indicator as to where your processor might sit in the overall field. The cpubenchmark site also gives useful info on power usage too.

Sorry, but £50 more expensive than a recent price is not a hot deal.

I can show you lots of things that are the cheapest ' at the moment ' but are still a bad deal.

This is a decent laptop with decent spec's at a decent price. If you can get it for £269.99 (open a new credit account) I would personally buy it IF i was on a lookout for a 15'' laptop. You can easily add extra storage to this machine.

VERY sold this recently for £250 (£350 minus guaranteed cashback). Cold from me.

Bang for buck this is a great laptop, not only the FHD screen but the SSD is a bonus. You will not (CURRENTLY) get better for the money.

(Although I hate Very with a vengeance - see the PS4 debacle, buy on credit card if you can so you are doubly protected with Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act if anything goes wrong.)

And lower power doesn't just mean the battery lasts longer, but the corresponding cooler running means the fan is off most of the time. This, coupled with an SSD means it's a silent laptop. RAM is also likely to be quicker than in a years-old laptop too.

It shows that many current CPU's don't perform much different to CPU's from several years ago. Quite whether we're to take that info and buy 4 year old laptops, I don't really know. To keep battery life up, temperatures down, current CPU's in laptops are not really much quicker than CPU's from a few years ago. Does it matter? no not really.

With no SSD, 1366x768 screen and less RAM. Oh and the £ was stronger then, too.

I also got this for £250 in the deal from Very at tail end of past year. It is a great 1080p laptop for that sort of money. The SSD means lightning quick power up. The laptop itself overall is fast enough for my needs, general browsing and Microsoft office tasks for example. Netflix is pretty decent on the screen. Never had any lag/delay but I don't play any games on it so couldn't comment on that.

My only gripe is, and I've had this with plenty other laptops, there is an annoying rattle coming from the bottom left corner near the track pad. Not a big deal but at some point I may have to try and sort it.

As for the ram, yeah it's on the underside of the board when you open it up bit it's hardly a big job even for the less technically savvy. Take a picture of all connections, take them all out, undo a few screws and jobs a good un. Remember to ground yourself before you go touching any boards.

Whilst I didn't know the above (video playback), I was just taking the mick with regards to synthetic benchmarks.

They're not really the be all and end all.

Processor benchmark is really not the be-all and end-all. The fastest computer in my house is just under 1,500, and my one at work is 6,000+ - but honestly there's hardly any perceptible difference when it comes to your basic office + browsing use. The only people who really need to worry are gamers and video editors.

As it's a synthetic benchmark and not trying to be representative of typical use it's hard to say unless you real life usage consists of letting the computer sit there and run calculations.

In practice the biggest difference you'll see between this and the newest i3-7100U is the lack of dedicated HEVC & VP9 video playback hardware which will mean it'll use more power when playing back the newest video formats and eat through the battery more quickly.

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/ is a website that shows benchmark results for different processors. In comparison, my HP laptop which I got from HUKD two years ago for £249 has a benchmark score of 4437 (i5-4288U).

Agree or if they could then you would'nt be able to leave your laptop / PC / Fridge etc unattended....

Purchased this from Very for £399 in December. Returned it as compared to my 5 yearly old HP Pav i3, it was ridiculously slow.

Start up quite quick but browsing and Football Manager very frustrating. (Old Laptop had a speed rating of 4/5 stars on this game and Acer had half/5)
Definitely not advised for Sims, Football Manager type games-wrongly thought the SSD would actually speed up the game.

Also not a fan of the touchpad, there is no button so can take a bit of getting used to.

May not be for you if your a casual gamer, want responsive browsing etc but seems fine if you only need it for basic programmes such as Word.

Recently purchased a cheaper version of this (without SSD & only 4GB RAM - took those from my old laptop) this as a cheap emergency replacement as my old laptop gave up the ghost and in my opinion it's solid for the basics and some light gaming such as Telltale Games, Civilisation V, Minecraft, Monkey Island Special Editions, FTL etc...

I only have three main gripes with it based on the past 2 months usage.

1. You have to completely take it apart to install more RAM.
2. Only one small air vent at the left hand side of the back and an even smaller one on the bottom of the laptop leads to excessive overheating.
3. The "Precision Touchpad" has a mind of it's own and some times just flatout refuses to work. You may need to use a mouse.
