that will be fun to see, because both Android Pay and Apple Pay have extra layers of security that a standard contactless card from your bank does not have. Your contactless card can be subject to something called a replay attack where someone within a few feet of you can record the transaction between the terminal and your card. with Android and Apple Pay, even if they record the transaction, the cryptography is better, it's a virtual card number and is basically impossible to brute force / programmatically guess ask the different unique parts of the transaction to create a new transaction. finally if your phone gets hacked, it doesn't matter, your bank is still involved in every transaction with Android Pay, and it's still up to your bank to spot odd behaviour, to authorise the transaction and to keep the transaction secure.

Used my £3 Costa gift card yesterday. Didn't buy any drink, just a panini that was £4.25 - used the £3 gift card (well, QR code) and used Android Pay to pay for the difference.
Found it funny that while I was waiting for my panini to be warmed up, the manager seemed perplexed and annoyed that I wasn't having a coffee!
Would never pay full price for that panini though. Flipping heck, £4.25?

Do we know the list of stores accept Android Pay.
I was trying at a Tesco Extra last week and nothing was happening.
Tesco definitely does work. Costa works too. pretty much any store that has contactless sign works as far as I have found.

As mentioned above, it should work everywhere contactless is accepted.
The phone can't be in sleep mode when you try to pay. The screen must be on, you don't have to unlock your phone, though.

ANYWHERE
ANYWHERE you see the above logo you can use Android Pay, it's not like Apple Pay where the machine has to be Apple pay ready. If you can tap a contactless card, you can use it.
Supermarkets vary from location, my Tesco nearest me doesn't accept contactless BUT the Tesco Superstore further down the road does.
ALL banks issue contactless cards now by default, so more and more places are coming online daily to use contactless, and like i said, wherever you see contactless Android Pay will work!
I ve been using it since the UK launch, and i swear by it, great experience and accepted almost everywhere locally to me.
PS (just noticed Uber has started taking Android Pay within the app too)!

For the people saying Apple Pay has less support than Android Pay, this is nonsense. Both of these services work exactly the same as a contactless debit card - it's basically using the NFC on your phone and an encrypted and (effectively) cloned form of your debit card details. This will work anywhere that a contactless card will work, and any problems with payment will either be down to the terminal or the setup of the phone. I've used both Android Pay and Apple Pay since day one, and have been able to use them anywhere from Tescos to little pubs in the middle of nowhere. Where my phone has failed to scan I've often been able to replicate the same problem on my actual card; although in that case I had the backup of chip and pin (which uses a different system and should therefore work.
I'm seeing fewer and fewer issues with this service and often go out on my lunch without even bothering to take my wallet with me these days. I like Android Pay better than Apple Pay because of the snazzy animations

i moved away from root as i enjoy android pay, systemless root was still being hard worked on so not sure if its been cracked yet.. had a rooted phone with android pay but android keep moving the goalposts due to the banks wanting tighter secuirty i guess.

Technical they may be identical, but there are still places that decide to support only one or the other. I certainly found a few shops that advertise Apple Pay, and do not accept Android Pay. With all the wireless cards being handed out and new phones supporting mobile pay, I would expect that shops need to clean up their act and get this working properly.

4 Dec 161#76
Anywhere the contactless symbol is displayed, Apple pay and Android pay will be accepted. The terminals do not have to be geared up for it - in short, the reader simply thinks you're fobbing a contactless card in front of the machine, so of course it will work! Just because the operator has never heard of it, or there isn't a sign, it doesn't mean it doesn't work; try it.
The advantage of using Android Pay/Apple Pay is that the £30 limitation does not apply. But, I understand, for this the readers do need to have a firmware update (most will now have had that I reckon).
The only real difference I can see is that Apple Pay requires fingerprint authentication for any payments, whereas Android Pay does not unless the value is >£30. But, that could possibly be handset specific.

Deal is good (so heat added), but Android pay is not. Some idiot decided all power users who root their device are blocked. Clearly, you don't understand the point I'm making, If banks are OK with one possibly insecure environment, they have no right to ban another possibly insecure environment. What makes it even more annoying is the environment they are fine with is FAR more likely to have been exploited than the one they flat out refuse to allow. Yes there are differences between a cracked browser and a cracked Android device, but as either could potentially empty your account if you didn't take steps, the difference is moot.

But based on my experience of these things I almost guarantee it'll go like this:

"..... er.... "
"It's Android Pay, once I've used my phone to pay for 5 things it gave me a gift card, you just scan this QR code"
".... er... a what code now? I don't think the scanners work on those, or phone screens..."
"Should do, it's a pretty popular thing now, I think your normal gift cards use them or there's the Costa app."
".... it won't scan... sorry... never heard of this! Jane, have you heard of this phone payment gift card R Q code thing or some kind of phone app?"
(queue backs up, tutting ensues, mutterings of "why can't people just use cash instead of these gimmicks" can be heard)
"Never mind, I'll pay cash"
(End up buying a coffee I never would've bought in the first place)

I got a 10 pound voucher yesterday! I was surprised when that happened.

Yeah this is the case on most things, although in Wickford it worked fine, scanned my phone screen with the scanner under their card machine.

Got my free coffee today. Still dont see the benefit of using my phone to pay for something, its actually quicker using my card i find.

Won two Odeon tickets!
As I don't go to the cinema, I'll just send the codes to my sister.

Strange, I've had no problems using mine 3 times (i got a £10 gift card too). They recognised it, and the same scanner the use for membership cards worked just fine.
There is also a FAQ page which can be found from the android wallet which is on Costa's own website.

Had a reply from Costa, apparently they're supposed to process it as an "eGift" and all the stores were notified. The machine was making positive beeps when scanning the code, so I think she was just pushing the wrong buttons on the till.
Didn't surprise me at all though - we're a small town where usually people say "oh I've never seen anyone pay by phone before" (they pretty much just invented the motor car around here) so I think they tend to assume they don't need to read these things.

Won a £10 Costa Gift Card earlier.
So that's a £3 Costa Gift Card to start off with, two free Odeon tickets and now £10 to spend at Costa.
If they keep on doing promotions and competitions like this I'll never use my contactless card again.Unless I lose my phone or need to pay for something over £30 of course.

This worked for me - thanks very much (back to the Co-op for me now)
Shame it doesn't pick up on the 5 transactions I already made today trying to get it to work...

Just tried using £3 card today and they said it was expired/invalid. I ended up paying with cash. Very poor and frustrating experience, as I had to wait 15 minutes in queue and another 15 minutes to get my coffee as they were so busy they forgot about my order.
Does anyone know the expiry date?
edit: Expiry date is apparently 1 year? Not 100% sure. The code scanned okay made beeping sound, tried scanning it 4 times, beeped each time, so I think it was most likely operator error. Why aren't the staff trained to know about this promotion and how to redeem the codes?!
Thanks just used mine this afternoon, by default they will assume it is a loyalty card and it will give some error message like 'not a valid costa membership card', I had to specifically tell them to select 'egift' or something similar to that and rescan it for it to work.
Opening post
Get a coin the next 5 times you use Android Pay in stores through 31 December. 5 coins gets you a £3 Costa Coffee gift card
Get a cracker every time you use Android Pay in stores through 31 December. One of over 100,000 gift cards could be inside.

Found it funny that while I was waiting for my panini to be warmed up, the manager seemed perplexed and annoyed that I wasn't having a coffee!
Would never pay full price for that panini though. Flipping heck, £4.25?

Dont know if other banks are the same.
I was trying at a Tesco Extra last week and nothing was happening.
On Android website, Tesco is not on the list (where all th store logos are) - https://www.android.com/intl/en_uk/pay/
The phone can't be in sleep mode when you try to pay. The screen must be on, you don't have to unlock your phone, though.
Heat op!!

You dont even need to be in the App, just unlock and scan from the home screen!
That was with Lloyds by the way. All my credit cards are contactless though.

anyone :stuck_out_tongue:
update: found the rest of the coins under the offer banner within the app. Just confetti after the first 5 taps.
I hope they bring back the tfl travel free and free Cafe Nero promo agen.
I was getting quite used to the idea of travelling around London,up to Central to enjoying me free coffee there.
I have used Android Pay at :
Costa Coffee
Nero
Starbucks
Asda
Tesco
Waitrose
Tfl
Nandos
Lidl
A Bicycle shop
Pubs that accept contactless cards
Two places that I know do not:
Sainsbury (no contactless)
Decathlon
However, I can't see their app lasting very long now, and they will need to join Android Pay at some point
If you key in them long nectar number then it will know its a nectar card (on self scan there is button 'key in item code'). This also works in M&S and Morrisons with their loyalty cards.
Maybe at the more 'festive' pubs you frequent :stuck_out_tongue:
...
For those that don't know already, root breaks android pay.
Stick with the piece of plastic in your pocket that can't have a Trojan installed on it.
I'm seeing fewer and fewer issues with this service and often go out on my lunch without even bothering to take my wallet with me these days. I like Android Pay better than Apple Pay because of the snazzy animations
also i have made a £84 transactions on android pay at ikea so i guess the limit may be £100 not £30 as previously mentioned?
When you scan, the app will open, wait a few seconds and a screen will appear with a crack in it. Click on the cracker to reveal your prize.
I can imagine the 250k coffees will be gone pretty quickly!
So for e.g
If you had 10 cards could you delete and reinstall the android pay to keep getting the offer on your 10 cards or would you use 10 different email addresses
I search all through the application and nothing is there.
I've only one card (which is default).
Once I open the application (Android Pay) it shows me the default card (No cracker on this screen).
Tapping on that card shows me transactions on that card (at this screen no cracker).
Tapping on a single transaction, give me little more information on a new screen (again no cracker here).
What am I missing here?
I got 'confetti' last time. AKA cock all.
Any one knows if the costa gift card will be valid for 1 year since last use? Thanks
If you want to do meaningful work, regardless of rooting etc, get your laptop out.
LOL LOL LOL

you get coins for only first 5 eligible purchases and after that its gift draw, which unfortunately resting in confer I for me so far. and while experimenting I also removed the offer from android pay and trying to find out how to enable it back.
Because in the app I'm being charged more for train journeys than what I would usually pay for with contactless & oyster.
So there won't ever be any more coins.
I don't think you can :disappointed:
But based on my experience of these things I almost guarantee it'll go like this:
(Order coffee)
"That'll be (£3ish) please"
"Okay I have this gift card on my phone"
"..... er....

Full terms and conditions (they've removed them from their web site, so here's Google's cached copy).
Yes, last day to redeem is today.
