Surely standalone sat navs as a technology are redundant now?

Many new cars not fitted as standard, not all have smart phones or want to use the phone in cradle etc

Useful on long routes or travelling to Europe. Not bad price considering it has lifetime map updates.

Nope.

In my opinion, standalone sat navs have hardware (speaker, non-reflective matte screen) and user interfaces that are better suited for use in a car with minimal distractions.

What a ridiculous comment

I think they have a point, they are less relevant than they were but I still prefer to use my dedicated TomTom rather than my phone as it does a better job. It is worthwhile however getting one with live traffic updates.

And then there's those car manufactures that still charge you £££ to update their maps on the integrated systems. Add the fact you can get speed camera alerts easily added to a standalone I think they're still very relevant8)

Google map is better as it shows the traffic condition.

for the older generation who wont/cant use smartphones, these are ideal. So not redundant at all!

Just sparking conversation. Other than when I'm on holiday google maps on an iPhone is more than sufficient for my needs. I have a tomtom standalone but rarely find a time when it is needed now.

Having to rely on your phone isn't ideal really. Makes more sense to have a dedicated device in the car that can interact with your phone in my opinion. At least at the moment anyway.

Lifetime Maps doesn't mean what you think it does ..... Tom Tom state Lifetime is just as long as they support the device, that could be 1 year - 2,3 or 4.
No traffic on this .... unlike all the smartphones on the market.
Has its place, but diminishing use these days

It could also be 5 year, 7 year, 10 year.. Heat added!

Am a huge fan of sat navs the battery life I find is disappointing. How long should a fully charged sat hav last?
