I really can`t imagine why anyone would want 45 rpm singles. The modulations were far too high to play properly without distortion with the best cartridges

I would have theorized that the equivalent data rate would be higher with 45rpm than 33rpm. More inches of peaks and troughs pass the stylus per second of music, surely? And the gap between the groove is wider, allowing for better separation of the track. I must have had it totally the wrong way around. I can see that the stylus may not be sensitive enough to react to the faster rate of oscillation, but why would there be 45's if it wasn't more resilient/durable?

I've just come back from doing a bit of research. Vinyl at 45rpm is nearly always better than at 33rpm and it is because of the analogue equivalent of data rate/compression. The cream of quality is a 12inch 45rpm single. Bags of surface area for widely spaced tracks at the higher speed (now we no longer have the 78rpm option).

is buying this not like buying a Chinese retro scooter because you love classic vespas ( little mod metaphor for you kids!) Sure it looks the part, probably goes fine, but in the end a souless copy that probably won't get out of the box, and won't impress anyone !

The problem is that the cutting head was driven so could respond almost immediately to changes in amplitude or frequency. But the stylus was of course passive (and had mass) so it couldn`t; the amplitude of 45 singles was higher and the tracks were wider apart because they were designed for robustness in record changers and juke boxes. I personally, have never heard cross-talk between tracks, even on notoriously extended lps.
Hi fi cartridges had enough problems trying to track smaller microgrove records (trackability) without damaging the tracks. Styluses for 45s are much bigger
The number of troughs and speaks passing the head is the same! whether you are talking about 78s 45s or 33s! These are analogue movements, if the number increases, the frequency of the sound increases.
I don`t know what you mean when you talk about analogue data compression, there was no data compression at the stylus, there was data compression in the amplification chain to reduce the dynamic range and there was the RIAA curve, applied at the cutting head, but this was theoretically, from the sixties, the same for lps and 45s.
