£700 worth of CPU/GPU alone. You could build it cheaper but if you don't have the confidence to do so and want a 3 year warranty, seems like a no brainer.

A lot of money for mid tier components here.
The i7 6700k at 3.4GHZ is also the weaker of the 2 variants, no mention of the motherboard but guessing it would be a fairly standard B170 maybe. As others have mentioned no mention of the PSU which is always a bad sign. The GTX 1070 is also a very mid-high range card and you could have much bigger bite from a better card. 128GB SSD is also hardly anything, being stuck with a mechanical drive for the main drive sucks.
I mean to build this PC would cost a lot less and guarantee you the build quality you want.
As of right now my PC costs around £1,300 and is FAR superior to this spec. I would dodge this build at any cost above £900 to be honest.

The 1070 is literally only weaker than 2 other GPUs out on the market at the moment. How that is anything but high-end I have no idea. 128GB is fine for putting the OS on there with a few important applications, short-stroke the HDD for games you play often, leave files you barely access on the slower partition. If you buy the parts now without looking for any deals then the CPU/GPU would come at just under £700 on their own, so an extra £400 for the rubbish motherboard with Wi-fi, SSD+1TB HDD, 16GB RAM, OS, fan, probably rubbish PSU, decent case and 3 year warranty isn't bad.

Surprised nobody has mentioned this is a Zoostorm PC. I don't think they include the LED lights which appear in the promo pictures. PSU is likely to be 500w and manufactured by FSP.

3 year collect/return/parts/labours, far superior GPU, very reliable company I've personally used many times that always use guess what? MSI core components. Built to last and knowing the GPU will be MSI just seals this deal. Spend a little more for 16gb ram and maybe a 6700k for future overclocking

Honestly, all this BS about PSU's from the same people.
It's a prebuild, it's been benched, it comes with a warranty, the PSU will be FINE. There's zero interest, nor money in them shipping a product unfit for purpose - it's a loss making business - if the PSU is too feeble to run stock frequencies and voltage you return it under guarantee and even after the guarantee expires you could claim it is unfit for purpose under EU law if it sets on fire and burns your house down...
The PSU is fine at stock... just like the thousands of MSI/HP/Dell/Lenovo systems that ship with similar specifications using the same generic PSU configurations. Guess what... they want profits too and minimum returns.

From the Q&A on the Argos website it uses an MSI B150 PC Mate motherboard, a Galax GTX 1070 EX Twin Fan 8GB (although the image shows a a Galax Reference GTX 1070; either is fine), and an FSP 500W ATX 85+ PSU
Looking at the pictures it looks like an NZXT S340 case with NZXT branded fans in the back. I would guess the RAM is 2x8GB sticks of Kingston ValueRAM but it could be anything cheap. TBH anything is fine so long as it works.
Unfortunately I cant get a clear view of the hard drive or SSD so i cant brand them, however it looks like their other PC's in the range us WD Caviar Blue which are a good choice. I would hope they use something similarly decent for the SSD.
So as always the weakest link is the power supply, however FSP are the 5th largest manufacturer of power supplies in the world and the consumer models they have released have received good reviews and the 3 year warranty provided by Argos/Zoostorm is more than most cheap power supplies provide.
Adding all that up in PC Part Picker provides a price of £1122.20 so with a 3 year warranty I would say that is a really good deal if this is the spec you want.
Watch dogs 2, Warhammer Vermintide and Rainbow Six Siege free as well.

Beaten out by the Titan X, GTX 1080, the 980Ti and the AMD R9. I dunno, 4 cards already being stronger not to mention all the different OC and SC versions of these cards - that's mid tier for me. I mean the GTX 1070 is kinda budget card to me, you can pick it up for about £325~£350.
MBeeching
8 Dec 162#34
Hmm, not sure I agree :stuck_out_tongue: There are more powerful cards available but the 1070 is no slouch. Anything higher is enthusiast territory and you don't stay there long without regular upgrades (I would swap my 980Ti for a 1070 in a heartbeat).
steve_bezerker
8 Dec 16#35
I'm not sure what you are talking about tbh the rest of the parts are bargain bin quality -
Motherboard - £80
Wifi - £50
SSD - £50 (being generous here)
1TB HD - £40
16 GB Ram - £80
OS - £15 (picked up windows 10 OEM key for less than this)
Fan - £5
PSU - £30 (Probably get one for less than this too)
Case - £40-50
Total: £360
A lot of these are prices are over-exaggerated and you can pick them up a lot less - I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt. Either way - I don't think PC really has any means to be over £900.
Also you can pick up the GPU and CPU for much less than £700. If you snag a deal on a 1070 at £300, the CPU I've seen on Ebuyer for £250 before. That's only £550. Add on the £360 from before and it's still only £910...
Benchmarks put the Ti higher than the 1070 on almost every field.

Works out about the same price, more storage though.
MBeeching
8 Dec 162#38
They're almost neck and neck with a few exceptions where the 980Ti pulls ahead. With newer titles the 1070 is marginally stronger and vastly more efficient. Clearly I wouldn't buy one, but when cards offer similar performance it's usually better to be on the newer architecture.
steve_bezerker
8 Dec 16#39
Yeah I was a bit confused by your statement. No sense in swapping yours, but if you're buying brand new then yes obviously take the newer pascal models.

This would be massive overkill for games like Minecraft and Ark. My son's PC is a Core 2 Duo from about 2008 with a 7600GT from about 2005 and it runs Minecraft just fine.
If you want plenty of headroom to play newer/more demanding games in the future and have plenty of money to spend today then great, but I'd save my money until it was needed.
Even a low-end modern PC with integrated graphics will run Minecraft just fine. If you buy sensibly now and spend the money on a decent GPU if/when it becomes needed you will maximise your investment.

8 Dec 16#52
2 things would worry me... unspecified PSU... probably cheap meaning higher running cost but also less likely to protect your components, before buying I would verify this.
Second, it's a small SSD. Assuming OS runs on here, you'll have to put most of your games on slow storage, so expect console length of loading time. Alternatively upgrade that SSD

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I need a new gaming PC but I'd like it to be as future proof as possible. I am willing to go a little higher in price but I'd like it to have a strong GFX card, motherboard, processor etc... and I think I'd like it to have 2 x 8GB RAM with a further 2 slots to expand it to 32gb RAM if that's possible.
I don't have that much of a clue when it comes to PC's.......hence my original comment

9 Dec 16#54
If you want a future proof pc i would wait a little while till the new kaby lake intel chips are released in January and i think the gtx 1070 is a good option for graphic cards right now and should be good for years to come as it can handle 4k and vr also 2 x 8gb ram is more than enough any more than that will make little difference to performance

9 Dec 16#55
Nothing is overkill for Ark, it runs horridly even on monster pcs.
I've chosen the cheapest parts possible to match what is advertised and realistically I can only get it down to £1080, it is £996 if you have your own licence key for windows. I wouldn't ever recommend what I linked I am just showing that really £1099 is not a horrific price if you start with nothing. If it comes with 3 years guarantee it isn't a terrible proposition. But I would be concerned at what parts they are using as if its anything like I listed. You are spending nearly £700 for the Processor and GPU and near enough £400 for everything else.
If you can build your own PC, spend a little more and get something decent.
