How often is the movie as good as the book?

Don't. The film is rubbish compared to the book.

Love reading so much better than watching someone else's imagination

Mmmmmm...I'm on the fence with that one, if you'd have asked me 20 years ago I'd have agreed with you completely...these days, either I'm choosier about what I read or films are just a lot better...they both have their merits.

A superb story, but spoiled (imo) by a faintly ridiculous denouement. Ignore that, and the rest is sheer brilliance.

I would say that across his career I have struggled with King's endings, they are the weakest parts of many of his books - The Stand, IT, Under The Dome (really, really bad) etc. - The Mist is still his best effort IMO.
