Setup is easy. Just connect your Steam Link to your TV and home network, where it will automatically discover any computer running Steam. All that’s left to do is grab your favorite controller, kick back, and enjoy your collection of games from the comfort of your couch.

http://1u88jj3r4db2x4txp44yqfj1.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Steam-Link.jpg

Performance
Steam Link is designed to take advantage of the horsepower you already have in your home, streaming from your current gaming computer by mirroring its experience to your TV. Video and audio data is sent from your computer to the Steam Link, while your controller input is sent back in real time. Virtually every game that your computer runs can be played on your TV using Steam Link.

As I leave my pc on all the time for Plex anyway, this is just a steal to me.

It means I can play all my emulated games downstairs with the nipper! None of this modern rubbish with no point to completion. All about mario, banjo kazooie and pokemon snap!

Bought one a few weeks ago now, use it for streaming games and movies and it works really well! Top thing to keep in mind though, it really doesn't perform using wifi even if you use the less-contested 5ghz band. Not sure why they even advertised it, as it constantly cuts out and drops frames from whatever you're streaming. As soon as I set it up through a wired connection however it's been flawless!

Grabbed one in Southampton store today. I wondered why they were showing so many in stock, turned out the staff didn't know they were on sale so hadn't changed the price tag from £39.99.

This is not so much about being a console replacement, but more about having the ability to leave your PC setup in say a study or bedroom and stream games to your living room TV (or any other room for that matter).

Received mine today. Very well packaged! I have my desktop pc connected by Ethernet to a very cheap looking non branded bb router that came with super cheap sse broadband.

Then steam link is connected over wifi.

Plugged into av receiver with hdmi and the receiver attaches to tv via hdmi.

Played some rocket league with Xbox 360 controller and seemed fine to me! Stats said it was streaming 1080 at 60fps continuous

Thanks for the deal. I ordered one and I think it is great. Paired it with my PS3 remotes and connected via homeplugs (gonna go by wire soon though as Dirt was a bit stuttery at times).

Yes, if the controller's compatible with the Steam Link:

"Supports Steam Controller (sold separately,) Xbox One or 360 Wired Controller, Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows, Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710, or keyboard and mouse"

Bluetooth items can be good too (though 'some games...'):
https://steamcommunity.com/app/353380/discussions/0/490125737458200263/

If your laptop is up to your gaming requirements, a laptop/table might be adequate, but mostly this is about delivering more hardware to the computational challenges of gaming (hardware that isn't near the TV).

The advantages (as I see it) over a laptop are:
-Can be permanently plugged into ethernet, TV, power and controllers for ease of use
-If streaming, ethernet gives you lower latency

Disadvantages:
-Streaming inevitably adds network-dependent latency to the transfer of the image (potentially noticeable) and controller (not necessarily noticeable). Your TV will also have its own latency.

If you have a laptop, you can test Steam Streaming from a desktop to check the latency before buying the Steam Link.

I was very happy to see that the Steam Link firmware is still being updated on the 6th Dec 2016( https://steamcommunity.com/app/353380/discussions/0/152391246766244456/ ).

28 Dec 16 #302
Yes, because this has nothing to do with the internet.

It's about having a PC in one room, yet being able to stream and control it from another.

For example, you have a very good PC in a locked office, yet don't want the kids touching it or installing stuff, you can simply leave it on and allow them access to the games on there by this little device.

28 Dec 16 #298
Really depends on your existing setup and requirements.

The Steam Link at this price is pretty much unbeatable value if you want to connect several peripherals or play some couch coop.
A £16 Steam Link + £6.50 15m network cable = £22.50.

To get the same functionality the alternative is;
£14 15m HDMI cable + £9 15m USB repeater + £11 4-port power USB hub + £5.50 Bluetooth 4.0 adapter + £8 Steam Controller receiver = £47.50

Of course if you are just looking to connect 1 controller and play solo then; £14 15m HDMI cable + £9 15m USB repeater = £23 . This would be the best bet even with the Steam Link on sale.

Yes I am currently using homeplugs and able to stream 1080p at 60fps.

Buy some AV2 homeplugs like these:

Will probably resolve all issues, you can always send them back if not.

This is my first comment but want to give you a heads up on Powerline adaptors. I've just moved to a new place and gotten a Virgin Media 200Mbps connection installed. I was pretty **** off to find that my '500Mbps' rated powerline adaptors were only giving speeds of around 80-90Mbps. After some research I found that whilst the adapters are rated up to 500Mbps, the Ethernet port on them is not gigabit (1000Mbps) and is instead only 100Mbps capable.

I have no clue why they're allowed to advertise them as AV500 or 500Mbps when the Ethernet port supports 1/5th of the speed but that's the case (it may be something along the lines of the adaptor including tech for speeds up to 500Mbps but only through the correct interface).

I upgraded to some AV1200 adaptors, ensuring they had a gigabit port on them, now getting around 95-98% of my 200Mbps connection speed with no issues.

So essentially all I'm saying is make sure that as well as getting a powerline kit with a high enough 'rated speed', that it also has a gigabit Ethernet which supports enough of the listed speed.

My experience of using Steam Link was last Christmas shortly after release. I used the crappy powerline adaptors mentioned above (without realising the limitation at the time) and experienced some latency/stuttering issues depending on the game/settings I used.

At this price, I'll be picking up a new Steam Link and hope that a combination of software updates and my upgraded powerline adaptors will result in a smoother streaming experience, I'll report back once I've tested this.

Sorry for any formatting issues!
colganraz
27 Dec 16 #294
Are you streaming using the plugs yourself then? I need to stream 4K games which is why I picked shield over steam link, probably a whole other issue in itself haha.

From what I can tell my connection doesn't struggle due to the data transfer but the latency being too high, but then again I'm no expert on these things.

I also looked at the more expensive adaptors which were 1200's if I remember correctly. (mine are TP link av500)

Thanks for the replies
TwentyTwo
27 Dec 16 #293
Sounds exactly like the homeplugs are not up to snuff, it is entirely possible to do though if you don't want to wire (I can't hit the max bitrate of 80Mbit unless I get faster homeplugs or switch to wired, hopefully H265 will happen at some point)

Steam streaming or the Moonlight app (on the Android store for the Shield) will work better with those plugs you own, but they are inferior to Gamestream having tried all of these options wired/wireless and through homeplugs.

colganraz
27 Dec 16 #291
I don't know much about it except that game stream is garbage on my power line adaptors , and it says because of the latency. Pretty sure was 3ms.I tried it on wired and worked fine though.

Just abit of a pain that I spent £100 to play my PC games in my living room and i can't actually do so... I'm either gonna sell it or go wired
jonnyh132
27 Dec 16 #290
You wouldn't pay for Plex, you pay for the online server so you don't have to keep your PC ever on all the time(and reduce upload data too)

27 Dec 16 #288
How are guys getting Rocket League to work? It starts perfectly fine on my PC, but I get a black screen on my tv via the Steam Link.
TwentyTwo
27 Dec 16 #287
3ms??? That is absolutely nothing, has to be a typo or misinterpretation.... I mean a TV can add anywhere between 25ms - 75ms itself.

The Shield hates Powerline adapters unless they are AV2 - which use all three wires instead of two. I couldn't use it until I got my AV2's.

AV1 500mbps = 720p @ 1Mbit
AV2 1000mbps = 1080p @ 55Mbit

If you are using AV2's then chances are it could be the wiring, which means switching over to the Steam link won't resolve it.

I used to use a local NAS, but with one drive failure (a 6TB drive no less!) everything went kaputt. And yes, I know about mirroring, yadda yadda. I do that with important files like for work. But I think with a home cinema most of your content is dispensable. After that it was a big load of hassle however. Got my 6TB replaced with no quibbles but decided to use my storage for other things and go with Bytesized's Plex plans. Still loads of space, no worries about data loss, fast streaming from wherever I like, no energy costs, etc.

I had the same thought given I have about £60 worth of credit on there. Unfortunately they charge extortionate delivery charges, around £7-8. I only know as I looked it up elsewhere, I couldn't even get steam to recognise my mainland UK address...

I struggled with the game website, my order kept failing. Purchasing as a guest solved this.
FlexR

Mantis
27 Dec 16 #280
If you're really into Plex I'd suggest investing in a streambox from a company like Bytesized. Your PC won't need to be on at all, you'll have plenty of space (not having to use any of your own), access to other functions as well as Plex and best of all, you can watch your Plex content away from home, like on holiday. After all, Plex was designed with internet streaming in mind. If you'd really only go with a home media centre I'd go with Kodi. It's better for that.

As for emulation I'd use a dedicated system. For instance, a classic Xbox with a large hard drive and CoinOPS. You can find these on eBay pre-configured, so no need to worry about flashing or installing a hard drive yourself. It's bloody amazing and even works in 720p if you follow a guide. Yup, few know that the original Xbox works in HD for a lot of homebrew software and even a few retail games. There are some 1970s vector-based (graphics drawn in real-time rather than pixels) games that look great processed in HD.

Mine worked straight off the mark. Powered up, connected to my 5G wifi, went into setup and did the abligatory checking of every option.. Set streaming options to "beautiful" and started streaming.

You can choose to show streaming info and see what bandwidth it's streaming at and whether it's loosing packets..

27 Dec 16 #276
I probably need to do some optimisations; but out of the box, over WiFi, the picture stutters every ten seconds or so. Due to the additional faff needed, I've not had chance to try it with homeplugs or wired ethernet yet ... but I was hoping it would just work out of the box, so a little disappointed.

Setup was also a bit hit and miss; updated and restarted twice and started the whole setup process from scratch each time; plus it decided it would update the firmware on the Steam Controller I got with it (!) only, it didn't work, then I couldn't control the Steam Link for ages until I'd worked out how to turn off the Steam controller (had to pull the batteries as holding the right buttons for a certain time didn't work), and eventually, after doing this three times, and pairing it with my laptop instead, it offered another go at updating the controller firmware.

Bleh.

Have you for your order yet. As someone said, it's a DPD problem and not GAME as I order the day this deal got posted and it arrived Christmas eve and I didn't pay for extra delivery. Definitely a DPD problem but GAME should sort it and get that refunded from DPD and then refund you for the postage.

Better latency on the shield too due to the way nearly everything is done at the hardware level (assuming you've done well enough in life to have an NVIDIA card)

26 Dec 16 #271
WiFi depends so much on your ability to setup your home system for optimal performance. Selecting better WiFi frequencies manually, moving devices to areas with less interference, making sure other home devices aren't hogging bandwidth etc etc. You'd be way better off using Ethernet if you don't/or can't optimise your WiFi. Even Ethernet power line would probably improve your experience with these. Not sure you can blame the Steam device though. Plenty of other people with no problems.

It`s the principle, if you let it slide, they will do it again, l ordered the storm grey xbox while it was on offer, it got picked up alright, l did not open it as it` for the kids Christmas, few days ago, opened it to set up the update ready to go, found to my horror, it`s the plain white one, got on chat, spoke to a moron that could not see the issue, and to simply return back to them, l politely told her that will be missing out for the Christmas, the whole point, l was just miffed, and said my bye, Amazon all is forgiven, l will not have an affair with other retailers again, l promise.

To be fair that sounds like a DPD issue not a Game one, if they have dispatched it as promised its now in the hands of DPD and you are at their mercy. I doubt paypal will side with you once its delivered, if you order anything at this time of year then you have to bear in mind there are likely to be delays.
wezlyons
24 Dec 16 #244
I've had to open a paypal dispute due to GAME's incompetence.

Spoke to GAME on their online chat yesterday regarding the order I placed on Thursday, I paid for express delivery to guarantee delivery for Christmas but received an email from DPD telling me that my order will be delivered on Wednesday the 28th.
I was fobbed off yesterday and told to get back in contact today when they would 'have more info'.
Contacted them today and was told by a very rude 'customer service' representative that "If DPD are refusing to delivery it today then there is nothing I can help you with" and cut me off :disappointed:

Hopefully Paypal will have better luck dealing with them.

Can someone running a modest (ie old) dual core PC connected over powerline adapters share how well it works for them? I have a E6300 cpu and 8800GT gpu, I guess my ageing hardware will lead to a bad user experience?
Firejack to hungry_goliath
23 Dec 16 #203
Yep, you are out of luck. What makes the magic happen with the Steam Link is the Hardware Encoders/ Decoders + Wired Ethernet. You get great quality and most importantly, low latency, making it feel responsive like you are in front of the PC.
Without the hardware support you fall back to software encoding/ decoding. My HTPC has a [email protected] (slower then the E6300 but close enough for comparison) and its too slow to encode and can just about decode a 720p@ 30 FPS Stream but the input delay is noticeable.
Using Powerline Adapters really depends on the speeds you get. For [email protected] FPS you need 30Mbit/s. I get 1/10th the rated speed of my Powerline Adapters in reality. You should check what you get first.

Depends what hardware you have in your HTPC, specially what Hardware decoder you have on your CPU/ GPU/ APU. Anything reasonably modern, even budget priced, from the last 3 years is likely to have a good enough Hardware Decoder.

Apart from the included Hardware Decoder, the other main advantages of the Steam Link are its easy to setup, "just works" without any compatibility issues with your main Steam PC, assuming you are Wired up in terms of your networking.

I use mine on my living room TV for games like Mad Max and Metal Gear Solid, which play really well with my 360 controller. Yes I can play them on a console, but they play better and look nicer when running on my PC and also are far cheaper to purchase than the console versions. Sometimes it's just nice to play a PC game on the sofa instead of being sat in front of a desk.

I wouldn't use it to play the likes of Planet Coaster or Cities Skyline etc, that just wouldn't work.

23 Dec 16 1 #198
Technically this should be possible using a VPN. You would need to be running a VPN server on your home network (some routers support it) and then run a VPN client on your son's PC. Not having remote access to the PC could make things more complicated. I think the biggest issue is likely to be your broadband speed.

You're saying modern gaming has no merit, that's totally absurd. You should try The Last of Us and Uncharted series of games as well as many others, for exemplary story based gaming which definitely have a point and were nigh on impossible to create in the vintage era. There's great games from all eras, however retro gaming is massively over rated.

satchef1 to n3m3s1s
23 Dec 16 1 #195
The Steam Controller doesn't work on the Xbox One.

The two controllers aren't really comparable. Where PC games have been designed for the keyboard and mouse, with no built-in controller support, the Steam Controller is likely to be better than the Xbox pad. It's what the Steam Controller was built for - being able to tackle Total War, Sim City, Planet Coaster, as well as Gears, Skyrim and GTA.

The Xbox One pad is far easier to use, and arguably superior in games that have native controller support. But K&M games are going to be broadly unplayable.

So the question is: what do you want to play?

So you connect a mouse and keyboard to your tablet and use it on a another screen in another room. I suppose the normal response would be the same if you said why don't you just use your phone. The phone and tablet are freed for other things. I don't thing I can wire my tablet to my network and then run a HDMI from it to my tv and then connect a mouse and keyboard to it. Then when I've finished , I want to use my tablet again or someone else does.
someone mentioned the word cludge, my house is one big cludge, with 15 bits of tech all trying to communicate with each other and none of them doing 100%, my daughter has just moved bedrooms, her pc isnt up and running, this will sit next to her tv wired so she can access the pc downstairs for media and little bits of gaming, i know nothing about home networking can you tell, everything seems fudged to me at the mo.

I'm not sure about that I just know when I connect it and try gamestream it doesn't work properly , I then run tests and it comes back with jitter I think? Packet loss and latency and or ping? :stuck_out_tongue: anyway everything comes back good except for the latency between router and PC which comes up bad at 3ms and says that gamestream won't be stable with that.

Something like that, it's been a while since I tried it on power line adaptors, I tried wired and no latency and runs 4K pretty good

Most games these days have controller support - strategy games and the first Mass Effect are two examples of games which do not support the controller (you can download a third-party patch for the latter though).

Also, Bethesda games have an annoying initial screen which you need to use a mouse and keyboard on, so Steam notes these as Keyboard/Mouse required. Just use the mouse/keyboard on your PC to bypass this (or perhaps find a mod) and you can use a controller as normal

(I am speaking from experience using Steam Streaming to a laptop - Steam Link is on order )

3ms is exceptionally quick and only a small piece of the puzzle. You need to add on all the other processes involved to get an accurate figure (input / GPU frametime / encoding / display response), it will be more like 50ms+

I don't get it either. There are games that are perfectly suited to a big TV. Which is why consoles exist. There are then games totally unsuited to a large TV - which is why you invest in a nice big, fast monitor to be sat right in front of. Some gaming experience would be AWFUL sat right back from the details etc that you want to see. Unless of course you're going to be sat there 1.5 feet from your 42" tv. In which case you need to seriously reconsider your life.

I went and got one of the last few in my local store but the more I think about my original question, the more I think it is possible. You can network from the other side of the World, I just need to set him up remotely on our network. We set up the steam box according to instructions and as long as his computer is always on and running steam then he should be able to play games at home with his PC at his Uni house.

Is my logic correct?

Edit* Probably not but we'll try anyway. I'm sure this will be useful for him regardless.

Other great things which I have found are.

Xbox controller turns on my Link & Samsung TV holding the Xbox button (USB Xbox controller Dongle needs to be plugged in link directly not PC)
WOL command can be sent from link to turn on PC.
PC can be shutdown from Link

So the PC doesn't have to be touched if you have auto logon to the PC.

How does it handle differing source & target resolutions & aspect ratios?
e.g.
What does it do when your PC is running a 5760x1080 (16:3) desktop spanned across 3 monitors, and you want to stream just the primary monitor to a 1080p TV?
Can you select just a single graphics device for the stream source, or does it attempt to downscale the entire desktop to 1080p?

Or more commonly, how about a PC with a 16:10 or 21:9 monitor, streaming to a 16:9 TV?

No, I will try them out at some point - I think my mate has some, so will see if can borrow them, although I heard that they don't work too well with this.

Im kind of gutted the price has dropped - was hoping to trade it into CEX but not really worth it now, considering I paid full wack. For £15.99 though, I think everyone should at least give it a go

Really tempted to buy a second one ... I bought the original for use in the Summer House, but i've had it plugged into the main TV and streamed football and rugby to it straight from my PC. (you can basically control your PC remotely, so you can do whatever your PC can do through the Steam box) - it does not just play Steam games!

Great device

Obviously if you are not using steam big picture then I agree, there is no point added to Steam. But for people who are, its good to know that you can add non-steam games to steam and play them on the steamlink. Personally I like the big picure UI, especially if only using a controller. Its just a shame my steamlink doesn't work well over wifi, so I don't use mine anymore

22 Dec 16 1 #86
1. Nope. The hardware doesn't support 4k, nor will it ever afaik. Maybe a v2 device would if Valve made one.
2. Yes it will stream Kodi from your host PC, but it will be a compressed stream of the entire interface and video, might be better off with an android device running Kodi.
3. Nope. Just HDMI.

I just want to make sure you know that the games don't actually run on this device. This device just allows you to play games that you have installed on a PC (elsewhere in the house) on your TV.

That said, the device is design to work with the online Steam games store (store.steampowered.com).

Yes, but it has higher hardware requirements - it will only work with certain nVidia GPUs (high end GTX series) so it won't stream from older desktop graphics cards, most laptop GPUs, and if you have an AMD card, forget it. Whereas Steam streaming works with any computer you can install the Steam client on. For example, I have a GTX780 in my desktop and a GT980 in my laptop, so nVidia streaming only works from my desktop whereas Steam streaming works from both. Also I think the Steam Link is miles ahead in terms of peripherals you can connect to it.

Of course you can, that was the main purpose of the link, to use it within the steam big picture mode and link all your games to it. I use my link downstairs to browse Reddit, watch films, anything I would do upstairs. But I have obsolutely no need to link my games from GOG client to the Steam client when I can just launch from the GOG client. (I never use big picture mode on either my pc or Link) Therefor by me either clicking on steam and selecting it or clicking on GOG and selecting it make obsoluteley no difference.

It glitches out. The PC is fine but the TV struggles. I am sure it relates to my home network on powerlines. Quite a few other people have found this.

Then you first plug in the Steam Link it will rate your connection. So you will find out pretty quickly if you are on a good connection or not.

Yeah. When I purchased it on release date I thought it only let you see the Steam "Big Picture" but it doesnt. Once you turn it on and select the pc running steam you can tab out of Steam and control the PC the same way you would if you were sat at it. I have a few game on GOG like Witcher and Stardew Valley. I just launch them from desktop and play them. It get a little more complicated if you want someone to still be able to use the PC at the same time. Thats when I run a VM so the Mrs can still do online shopping.
