Gran & Gramps - save a copy of family photos here! You might burn down your house in an absent-minded moment!

But being mindful enough to move the backup off site?

As someone who deals with data loss 'for a living' - trust me when I say the people who have the most to lose and the least idea how to protect it are WAY younger.
I have loads of older customers, most of whom are keenly aware of data security and take reasonable steps to ensure their stuff is safe.
Not so the 20-somethings with phones full of baby pics they cannot bear to lose - tablets full of family pics which are priceless and those things are deader than dead.
In all honesty, almost no-one actually does 'proper' backup (I know more about it than most people ever will and I could probably do better!!) but I would say that the people who take the biggest risks are generally the younger ones (hell, I told a 13-year-old that every pic he'd ever taken was lost when he fried his iPad and his face was well worth painting!!)
Oh - and for the record I reckon External Drives are THE most useless thing in backup terms - but this maybe isn't the place to discuss that (if you're thinking they're a backup solution tho - they're not)
