Still a great price for the 1st gen white bulbs and bridge. As far as I'm aware these Lux bulbs are essentially the same as the Hue White bulbs so will do 2700k white and can be dimmed. The only difference between these and the newer Hue White bulbs is a slightly different shape, a slightly lower light output of 750lm vs 806lm (arguably a slightly lower heat output too) and the cost - the Hue White kit costs £59.99...

Lux bulbs have a fixed colour temp as far as I know, so they're not the same as Ambiance.
Also worth noting that this version of the bridge is not compatible with Apple HomeKit.
Other than those two minor issues, good find - heated!

Thanks for pointing this out - description updated. I had confused the Hue White and Hue White Ambiance.

They're also a lot less bright, unless your on a very tight budget you'll only regret not getting the current version bridge and lights.

do these work with the amazon dot? is extra hardware or software needed?

Thanks OP, seems like a great price. A bit concerned that the order just says "Philips hue 9w lux White" even though the product page shows that it's the starter kit in the description and some of the images. Took a screenshot in case they just send me a single bulb

I don't think there's much difference. The Hue White bulbs are rated at 806 lumens and 9.5W and these Hue Lux bulbs are rated at 750 lumens and 9W.

1st gen hub works a treat with Alexa, I currently have one setup and working fine
Compares bulbs and bridges, 1st gen is the same as 2nd except without the apple connectivity, As far as I am aware the 1st gen works with Alexa and should work with all generations of philips bulbs.

Apologies, I was wrong. It does with Amazon Echo. I have deleted my previous post to prevent any confusion.
I was pretty adamant it didn't work when I researched picking up an Echo in July while in the states.

don't know here you got that information from but the 1st gen bulbs are 200 lumens duller than the second gen so 25% less.

Can you use this 1st Gen Bridge with Gen 2 bulbs? I didn't even know there were 2 generations but I don't want to buy tech that won't work with the current tech. Bought my parents a Dot for Christmas and want to set their house up with some Hue bulbs.

Well looking at the same price of second hand gen 1 bridges I bought 3. Should cost me about £3 a bulb net!

Are newer gen lightbulbs compatible with the gen 1 bridges?

8 Dec 16#23
Yes, I have the new richer colour bulbs on a gen 1 bridge.

8 Dec 161#20
For the coloured bulbs you are correct the gen 1 bulbs are around 600 lumens and the gen 2 and gen 3 are around 800 lumens (at certain colours only) so there is a 200 lumen difference, i.e. the gen 1 is 25% dimmer than the gen 2 and 3.
Thanks for this OP. Been waiting for a cheap starter kit. I have a couple of Echo Dots and wanted to be able to control our lamps. Gone for it

Great price. I paid £52 for this kit including the Bloom from Luzern a little while back and it's great kit. I use the Lux bulbs for the drive and porch; plenty bright enough and means I can see to get the key in the front door at night

Silly, question, but does having these set up as your main lights mean you always have to have the light manually switched on at the wall?
4me2save to Alasdair91
8 Dec 161#25
You can use them as normal light bulbs from the switch but if you want to control them with your phone the light switch needs to be on. You can get switch guards to stop the switch being turned off and just use the app or get a hue dimmer switch to use instead of the wall switch. Lots of options.
No, this is a 1st gen bridge. BT deal was with 2nd gen bridge.

Mine arrived today, cheers OP. One question that I hope someone can answer, I have bayonet light fittings at the moment and these bulbs are screw in, can I get any cheap bayonet to screw adapter (seen some for about 0.80p on amazon) or do they have to be a particular type for these to work?

received mine just, don't use the hue v1 app use the other one as it didn't like that one, the one with the coloured logo is the one you want. pretty straight forward after that, Echo was much easier though. I got 2 power supplies with mine did anyone else. So for the price of the Echo plus £2, I got a Dot, Panasonic All6 speaker and a Hue package, bargain.

With the white bulbs, however, the Lux bulb (gen 1) and the Hue White (gen 2) only have around a 50 lumen difference i.e. the Lux is around 6% dimmer than the Hue White. My understanding is that the Lux is rated at 750 lumens at 2700k (https://techcrunch.com/2014/08/19/philips-hue-lux-review/) whilst the Hue White is around 800 lumens at 2700k (http://uk.pcmag.com/philips-hue-white-e26-smart-bulb/77597/review/philips-hue-white). I have a Hue White and it states 806 lumens on the bulb.
