Why should i have to understand the woes of the train operator?
I pay for a service which they are supposed to provide, the fact that they seem incapable or unwilling to do then why should i put up with a 2nd rate service?
1) The route that I use on a daily basis is served only by the 25+ year old pacer style trains, they are slow and uncomfortable.
2) They are always overcrowded, if im lucky i can get a seat maybe once a fortnight.. Often its only a 2 carriage train and people are left waiting at the station for the next train (30+ mins)... Its virtaully impossible to get on the 8.14 train and as a result ive had to change my work hours to catch the 9.13
3) Trying to buy a ticket is becoming nigh on impossible
The ticket machine at the station is out of order 80% of the time (has been reported many times), the ticket contractors handheld machine fails pretty much everyday whether its battery or signal issues (plus he knocks off at 8.40)
The train is often so crowded the conductor is unable to provide tickets to anyone as he cant leave his cab.
The mobile app is great, i purchase tickets... but they cant be scanned by the ticket gates (yet!) so you have to find a friendly cs rep to let you through...maybe
So you have to venture to the ticket office in Leeds station on arrival, where there is always a very long queue and 1 in 50 seem to be picked out at random for a hefty fine for travelling without a ticket!
I tried a weekly/monthly pass but until recently they had to be renewed at the station because the conductor doesnt venture down the train and it couldnt be done online.
4) I can count the number of times the train has been 'on time' on one hand.
This is why people either avoid using public transport or are fed up with the high costs and poor quality of service.

Is it possible to get Manchester (any station) to York and return cheaply?

I think Northern have good customer service, and they keep alive local stations at least!
The thing that lets them down is sadly the trains. They're crap.

Most likely the journeys you're searching include a portion of the journey which isn't serviced by Northern Rail on that particular leg at that time. Happened to us too.. Open the "information" icon and look at who is supplying each leg of the journey..

I've used Northern many times particularly Hull to Sheffield direct & on searching journeys on various dates I'm getting the invalid code message every time.

I agree, ridiculously hot in the summer, but they were also freezing in the winter. Worst trains I have ever been on, they needed retiring long ago. They are the equivalent on the old clapped out double decker buses school kids have to get on, with the dodgy number plates that hide how old the bus actually is.

doesn't seem that you can you have to go from Victoria for Huddersfield.
From someone who works there, don't ever travel Man Vic to/from huddersfield on the weekends. EVER!
Spoken like someone who doesn't have a clue what goes on, all it takes for one train to break down or encounter some kind of obstruction for it to mess a whole lot up. You'd be surprised how many little things train drivers and conductors encounter ... some things would be considered beggars belief.

This isn't the case Northern are receiving a great many positive comments from customer surveys and a steady improvement of the service has been noted by passengers. Not every single train is late and should your train unfortunately be delayed you have the facility to make a claim for compensation, please see the northern website and the 'delay-repay' page. On some services due to popularity such as those used by commuters it can at times be full and standing however this might only be for a short period of the journey, a seat is not guaranteed only your safe carriage to your destination. Northern are making substantial investment in every aspect of the business to benefit customers as it is the customer who is at the heart of their business. I am a regular rail user and have found Northern so far to be a responsible and proper operator and welcome this incentive to encourage rail usage. Well done Northern

Really? The old pacers I commute on can't have the heating turned off as it's the radiator for the engine, which makes summer especially unbearable.

Yeah I think you are right, I've caught this route towards Leeds via that route and elland brighouse mirfield and I'm sure that finishes 720 from Manchester.
Another train takes the same route to sowerby and then Halifax and Bradford to Leeds that will be he later one

Thanks for that, it is a lovely scenic ride. The last trains are actually about 11pm/midnight, certainly from Leeds to Manc, and think they'll be about that from Manc to Leeds. Anyone wanting a random town to visit, a bit quiter than a city, Halifax has the most stunning Victorian market hall, still in use, and other nice things to potter around, also an unusual modernist 1970-ish Halifax bank HQ, unusual town hall in Swedish style, and 2 good Wetherspoons.
