My wife was looking in a jewellers window the other day and I'm sure I heard her mumbling something about how she would like me to buy her something with carrots for Xmas.
I couldn't just spend 19p on her for Xmas? Or could I?
Nah, I'll buy her two bags! :stuck_out_tongue:

I'd like to add to this also that *not* having a best before date on veg goes some way towards stopping wastage for large supermarkets, who dispose of tonnes of perfectly good fruit and veg every week just because a 'best before date' says that they should, and because many consumers won't buy things that they feel aren't fresh, even though their is nothing wrong with it.
Unfortunately these days people rely more on best before dates than their noses and eyes, which is very sad.

Be aware, I think there is a limit on how much you can buy. I had a trolley full of veg at the checkout but realised I needed another bag of small onions. I asked the guy on the till if it was alright to go and grab another bag and he said 'no that's shallot!'
I reckon you might be able to buy a few in each store though.....Lidl by Lidl

Get from Aldi or Lidl and it will be rotten in two or three days time.I am not implying that this happens in all Aldi or Lidl, but it does happen quite a lot with the fruit and veg in Llanelli stores.

Veg doesn't need a best before date. Carrots, potatoes etc will keep for weeks on end in the fridge. Best to gauge the state of the vegetables at the time of purchase rather than worrying about what arbitrary best before date someone came up with. Sprouts deteriorate quite fast so I tend to just get frozen ones, defrost them overnight, halve them and fry them with bacon on Christmas Day.

Well, it can't be called price match, as Lidl is selling 1.5kg of potatoes, where Aldi is selling 2kg bags, same with parsnips, 600g at Aldi where only 500g at Lidl

19p... Wow... A bag of spuds, planted, grown, picked, cleaned, bagged, transported and put on a shelf. I wonder how much the shops paid for them. Maybe 10p. I dont usually think twice when i see a bargain but surely these farmers must be getting screwed over if we are buying stuff so cheap.

Probably a loss leader and quite a clever one. By reducing a few key low value items it only slightly reduces the cost of your shopping but is great at getting consumers to perceive lower pricing. Obviously real savings are high price items with big reductions, half price offers etc. Lidl operates on a higher profit margin than most UK supermarkets. It does that by only selling high volume items, so a more limited range and by buying low price goods and selling them under their own created brands with an appealing colour label. I.e. their ketchup might be 50-70p but the same ketchup in Sainsbury's under its 'basics' brand is 30p with a dull unappealing label. That's not to say Lidl isn't great value but they are clever in the way they control perceived value in the mind of their customers. Not forgetting a greater ratio of their food is imported which used to offer greater cost savings although perhaps with sterling falling in value maybe that advantage has diminished partly.

Think people are getting sick of seeing this link now. Every supermarket has had an issue with a product in a supply chain before, it's not their fault as such, and you're no more likely to see this happen again at Lidl than anywhere else - it's just one of those things. Every Supermarket has had one or more major safety recall or ingredients scare at some point in recent years.

To be honest its one of those products where I can't tell the difference in quality so tend to go for the cheap option. I did pick up a Heinz squeezy bottle for a £1 about six months ago because it was an offer but it was 70p wasted really. Same with heinz baked beans actually prefer the Tesco everyday value. However when it comes to tinned soup you can't beat Heinz cream of tomato.

The Lidl ketchup is cheaper for a larger bottle but that was not what I was on about, I was on about that Lidl prices are as good if not better for branded products and a smaller size Heinz ketchup is dearer in our Iceland ( Overseas Ltd ) and in the local stores around that sell products for the UK people over here.
I know it's not relevant for HUKD readers in general but good information for people holidaying here that do their own catering.
