I've been lurking this one for a few days now. Here's my story thus far. My objective to replace my six year old macbook pro with a cheapish windows laptop that could hopefully last me the next two years and cope with watching you tube browsing the web and listening to pod casts. I was armed with all your kind posts in this thread as to what to expect from the challenge that lay before me. Oh my did I want a cigarette afterwards. You would expect ten minutes tops for a sales rep to find the item I wanted and sell it. Nope :disappointed: Firstly 'what are you using the laptop for' said the sales rep. I replied youtube, browsing the web and listening to podcasts. The sales rep then said come with me sir, err ok I said. The poor young chap had to do his up sell and so it began. 'Could I interest you in 365 office ?' no was my reply. 'Why' he asked. Well I won't be using that software as I told you before but if I was I see software as product not a service. Oh he said. Then you would want word on its own then. But I added no, I don't want it. Ok then how about internet security then Norton / mcafee perhaps ? No thanks. How about our online storage solution then its brilliant. No thanks besides amazon offers it in their amazon prime if I wanted (not sure if they have or do but hey  Ok then how about I give you all this software for half price ? No. He asks me why. I told him I just want to buy the laptop thats all but I realise he is just doing his job and that although I'm not going to listen to him I will make it look like I am for his benefit. Ok then he smiles awkwardly. Ahem he says ' you do realise that the laptop has a lot of updates it needs to do since it was packaged at the factory ? Oh yea been there done that. Well how about I offer you a memory stick 32gb with all the updates to speed your laptop update alone ? Err no thanks I'll do that my self thanks. Ok then £15 is that better. No I just want the laptop thats all. Ok ' what happens if during the course of updating your laptop the software fails and you can't recover the laptop he said. Well I said I either bring it back to you, boot via the bios via the recovery partition on the hard drive using the Novo button or bring it back to you and your tech people fix it. No he said. I look puzzled and tell him then doesn't that affect my consumer rights and I should go to the relevant people to seek legal advice ? Oh he said err ahem perhaps. He then leaves to find the box with the laptop i want in it. He comes back five minutes later looking puzzled. He can't find it. Is there a problem I ask. Oh its just I can't find the power adapter he said. Oh I say but it should be in the box, the box is sealed right, I'm not buying a new nintendo 3ds. He wanders off again. Ten minutes pass. He returns with the laptop in its box. He take it to the counter and I check the seal on the box carefully. It looks ok. Phew  Then he tries for the penultimate time to up sell me. Would sir be interested in our accidental breakage cover. Nope  He then walks away with the laptop to converse with his line manager. I'm feeling annoyed and bad for the kid but I just want out. If reading this isn't torture enough for you it was for me. He comes back to offer me to free months of cover and I decline. Lastly as he is ringing up my purchase he interrupts me to ask if I would like a deal on a mobile phone. I tell him I have one and its tied with my broadband. I lie to him about the wonderful deal I have on a rolling contract and he gives up still smiling. I would never want to work for PC World. I feel sorry for the staff and the customers. Its already been 'emotional' as Vinnie Jones once put it. I don't want to go back ever again you can't make me wha wha wha

Just bought a white one for my daughter. Whilst at the store i checked the display unit to find the backlit keyboard didn't work. The assistant checked and confirmed the model does not have a backlit keyboard. The manager offered a refund and gave an excuse about the incorrect specification being a human error.

I bought it anyway and checked it once I got home. DEFINITELY NO BACKLIT KEYBOARD. If this feature is a deciding factor, think again!!!

Don't really get why people keep suggesting the 710 from John Lewis, It's not as if it's just an extra 50 or 100 quid, It's an extra 250, Yes you get extra storage space which we all like, But you need to be sure you need and are going to use the extra 4 gig and the i5 to justify the extra 250, An all balls out gaming rig only needs 8 gig of memory, So why it's felt you need 8 gig in this I have no idea, If you do the occasional bit of photo-editing this will still do, But be fair, If your someone that does loads, Your be sitting at a desktop with a all singing 27" and not a 14" screen.
This will do anything the average person needs it to do with ease, And if I'm gonna go to 600 quid for a laptop, Then I'm going the whole hog for a HP Spectre or XPS 13 and not the 710.

Is anyone else having issues with their laptop in particular using the internet? Using the internet is near impossible on this thing. It starts up edge or chrome very quickly but when i try to search or open a webpage it takes forever most times thats if it even loads at all. The wifi says its connected ok but 95% it just wont load any pages. I have to reset the wifi all the time and even when i do it lets me do a search on the internet but after that it justs cuts out again. Wish i hadnt bought this thing now, it is just totally unusable for the internet.

What are you going to use it for though? Professional video editing or something?
Otherwise, this thing is speedy as Gonzalez, it boots up faster than an old MacBook I had with top of the range specs. It can handle 2 or 3 internet browsers with 10-15 tabs running, a torrent client running, kindle running, open office running and a downloaded 1080p hd video on windows media player playing all at the same time absolutely smoothly, not a care in the world.
Still pinching myself that this was 350 quid. It's a great laptop and it's extremely portable

Good point about using large capacity SD cards for data storage. They are quite expensive though in much larger capacities meaning that a SSD was the better solution (for me). It's a shame that SSD's seem to be rising in price at the moment. Wish I'd jumped on a SSD deal back in the Black Friday deals! I guess SSD prices will start to fall again when the NAND memory shortage ends (SSD/HDD/NAND shortages)

The SSD supplied in my Yoga510 is a Samsung unit.. P/N MZYTY128HDHP
I think it is about 5mm thick. The Crucial MX300 525GB unit is 7mm thick which is the same thickness as the caddy that fixes it into place in the laptop. The Crucial SSD fitted without any issues relating to the extra 2mm thicckness.

Hope that helps

I was going to put the point forward that for most people that they could just use a big sd card (if its just data) but it seems ssd's are now cheaper in the bigger sizes than sd. How times have changed.
lump
13 Jan 17 #548
Thanks for your instructions/experience.

Was your replacement SSD a standard size one? On a Yoga 700 I had, it had a 5mm thick SSD drive, instead of the standard 7mm.

You only need to remove bottom panel from laptop, no other components need removing.. except the disk (of course). See my comments a few posts below... Good luck , if you try
pileemhigh
13 Jan 17 1 #546

Good find on the Hardware Maintenance Manual.. I hadn't spotted that when I upgraded the disk on mine, but I managed anyway without breaking anything

The procedure is quite straight forward... after cloning the existing SSD onto a larger one and re-sizing partitions. Referring to the manual:-

Remove screws on underside of unit. Page 33 shows the 10 screws located under the laptop. It's worth noting the different lengths else there should be no surprises removing these.

Prising the bottom cover off was fairly easy. As shown on Page 34 prise the front edge off first, as there are small locating clip things on the back edge. I would say that these clips may break if you try to lift back edge first.. so beware! As usual when prising these plastic cases, use a thin plastic opening tool (spudger) working your way around the sides and front edge, then lift up from the front edge. I prefer not to use sharp knives for this sort of thing, as I worry that the knife may slip and damage the internals.. or worse, my fingers/hands

Page 34 mentions removing RJ45 door.. this is not necessary

Page 44 shows 3 screws being reoved to allow the disk drive caddy to be slid out from the unit. One of the screws on my laptop had a paper anti-tamper thing fitted. Having removed the 3 screws, slide the disk (in its caddy) towards the front edge of the laptop to unplug the SATA interface.

The actual disk is attached to the very flimsy caddy using four screws. Unscrew, swap the drive, replace the four screws, slide the new disk/caddy back into the SATA interface. Then replace the 3 screws that hold the disk/caddy.

Replace the bottom panel inserting rear edge first, and clip down other three sides.

At this point (before replacing the 10 base screws) I checked that the Laptop powered on okay, and booted with my new cloned SSD. Then I replaced the 10 screws in the correct order observing the different lengths (shown on Page 33). Do not overtighten the screws and don't worry about the warnings sbout using a torque driver (on Page 31), unless you are a gorilla.

I accept the comment made by simonbrowne (above). Very good point, well made. But in my situation I cannot live with the smaller SSD (even after wiping the recovery partition and extending the 'C' drive), so a disk upgrade was essential.

lump's comment about not attempting unless confident is a good one. If you are not confident, then it may be better to purchase the new drive, clone it and change partition sizes. Then take it to a computer repair person who has more experience with taking these things apart.

13 Jan 17 #544
my view on upgrades is only do it when necessary. 128 should last a long time for most user so upgrading now when you dont have to means you'll be paying a premium compared to what the price may be in 6 month or perhaps youll never need to if you just uninstall unused program's or move data to another computer that is no longer needed on the lenovo. I myself think it great to have all that space (525 gig) on the laptop but the question is do i really need it.
PaulG1970
13 Jan 17 #543
Is it an easy fit? I have never done it on a laptop, some of the guides online for certain laptops show you have to remove lots of components.

People with issues are more likely to complain so posts here might give distorted view.

Quality issue is not limited to Lenovo. Lenovo build quality on business laptops (ThinkPad) is fabulous but same with all other brands: you do get what you pay for: there is cut-throat competition and the cheaper consumer-grade Dell, HP, Acer Asus, Lenovo ... etc. often are very plastic'y and flex and come with not-do-great touchpads etc.
gw3gon
9 Jan 17 #526
All these complaints about build quality/faults are honestly depressing. I have mine still in my box with me and I think after reading this thread, I will return it for a refund. I've heard things about Lenovo's poor build quality so I don't want to be wasting my time a few months down the line trying to get it repaired.

SSD stands for Solid State Disk, in simplest terms it's a Hard Drive (aka the storage) but with no moving parts, this has two major advantages, 1. it is a lot faster, opening programs and starting and shutting down the computer is much much quicker, and 2. because there is no moving parts you don't have to worry about the computer being picked up and moved about while it is on which is perfect for these type of 2 in 1 devices which are designed to be picked up moved about while running.
The disadvantage is that at the moment they are more expensive than Hard Drives so you get less storage for your money, that's why this comes with only 128GB, only you will know if that is enough for what you keep on the computer but for browsing the internet, films, tv shows and streaming this laptop will be great, and it will probably be plenty of space.
hashemcom007
8 Jan 17 #519
Also ssd increases battery life, reduced noise coz has no moving parts and operates much quicker than hdd

Quite possibly, I'm not sure as I was really tired when I first typed up my experience that morning. Hi
Me and my partner bought one each and both had an issue with the touchpad. It stopped working and the cursor arrow would only move a tiny bit. I went into the device settings, changed the touchpad settings to default then went into device manager and searched for drivers. It said I had the best version of the driver available. Then a box came up saying I need to restart for updates to take effect. After the updates on both machines the touchpad seems to be ok. However I have read on forums about some kind of ongoing issue with the touchpad on Yoga models. No idea if it is Leonovo or Windows causing the issue but if it happens again we will return them.

How difficult is it to upgrade RAM overall? 4GB feels quite slow, I mean not that it is slow, just the fact that my memory is at 90% usage almost all the time. SSD helps tremendously because even at that usage everything opens fast, but it would be nice to have 8GB.

5 Jan 17 #497
just upgraded my ram. be careful doing it. it's covered by a silver case in the middle of the MB. there are clips each of the long sides. be careful pulling them back. a small flat head screwdriver on the short side lifts it up. there are then plastic clips holding the ram in place. all I need now is my broadband back to get an ISO made for my 525gb ssd.

Think a couple of people had mentioned that the cashback hadn't tracked for them and I was the same until yesterday when it finally did, 6 days after buying it.

I mentioned before about the screen seeming dull and, now that I've compared it to another 1080p screen laptop, it's actually that there is a bit of a yellowish tinge to the colour. Does anyone else have the same problem? I can't tell if it's just not the best quality of screen or if it's a simple case of needing to adjust the colour or something. I've tried that though and it doesn't seem to improve

No need to connect mains first - it just works. Can't remember when Office would come bundled with software, but if you use Office with work you may be able to get the 'Home Use' version for around £10 (I've seen it on HUKDs before too).

Also, Currys are a bloody nightmare - I get the staff have been told to ask these Qs, and they work with commission too, but how many times do they have to be told " I know about PCs, I don't want you to sell me any extras, I don't need them" - also being told by one member of staff they don't do white, and another when and got it a minute later.

The bundled USB i think is actually useful to those not into making their own recovery usbs - I certainly could have done with it instead of wiping all my data because I couldn't be bothered to make the usb myself early on.

Great laptop though - no slowdowns, great screen and looks good in white

I think the battery won't activate until you connect to the mains first.
I agree about that programs. Once upon a time it was given that you got Office with a new computer but now, although the program is installed, you have to subscribe for license. Open office for me I think.
I got Mcafee free for a year but after that I will probably just install Avast.

I had the a similar problem on my end too. I don't remember all the steps I did but I do remember having to access the bios, run the motherboard in legacy mode set the boot order to usb first (to access the windows ten iso I downloaded from the microsoft website) and go into command prompt to access the hard drive. Here it had the hard drive with one partition at 114gb i think. In command prompt I had to set that partition to clean before I could install the windows iso I had made from the microsoft website to a usb stick. I also discovered that lenovo doesn't have a recovery image on their website for this laptop which is the 510 14isk. Looks as if the think pad is the yoga in other parts of the world.

Adding the stupid recovery stick might be a good excuse to sell a returned one. Most of the customers would not notice the light bleed or coil whine (for Dell laptops)

Finally relented after a week of trying to find something better and bought at PC World Winchester having reserved.

Was briefly asked about AV etc but said no and thought everything was going smoothly until the assistant came back sheepishly to the till and claimed that they only had the previously setup machines left i.e. with a recovery USB and suggested I would need to pay a £35 service charge. Demanded to see the manager who explained that PC World tell them half of the units can go out as is whereas half have to be 'prepared'. However, without me uttering a word he said he would waive the charge for the USB so got laptop and a 32GB stick for £349.

Pretty shocking tactics to be honest and I bet people have fallen for it.

You should be able to create one on any other windows 10 machine. You boot up from the usb and use the recovery partition that is already on the ssd. If this does not work its probably the ssd that needs replacement in which case should be covered by the warranty

No issues with mine at all. No light bleed, bright screen for indoor use. Track pad is actually quite impressive, responsive and no rattles etc. Battery life for general browsing seems excellent. Bought it for the wife after she destroyed her macbook air with coke/coffee. She is very happy, and at £316 (£33 cashback via Quidco)I am very happy too. Just a shame that I did not remember to use a Currys gift card or else I could have saved a further 5% on the sale price.

This is why I've just been reading the thread. Lenovo have awful build quality. I bought one a year or so ago, and after getting to my second replacement (so three in total) realised they're just poorly built.

Shame because the VFM is terrific, but useless if it falls apart after a few months!

3 Jan 17 1 #463
Just taken my replacement back for a full refund.

Screen had light bleed on bottom right edge and top left.
Brightness was poor even at full.
The trackpad was just awful, everytime you place your finger on it you get a click and knockling noise as though the pad itself is loose.

Its a design fault with the latest pads where the left and right buttons are part of the main pad making it not sturdy enough so when you place your finger on it you get movement and that horrible click/knocking noise.
I just couldnt live with it so returned it.

Bought this yesterday. Nice machine though feels a little heavy. The USB wasn't mentioned and it did take a while for all the updates to take place.
Took the cover with one month free as last time my partner bought a laptop, I spilled coffee on it the same day and it was ruined. She wasn't impressed so thought I would play it safe this time. Will cancel after a few months.
Also gave me Mcafee Livesafe free for 12 months.
Hate Windows 10 and had to turn off so many notifications and "send data to windows".
Good laptop though.

All in all this is a brilliant machine and looks stunning in white. Think it's perfect for when I go to uni.

The only things I've noticed are:

-on YouTube the pause and full screen buttons flicker
-when I'm typing on the touchscreen with my headphones plugged in, there is a buzz with every character I type, even with the sound up.

Anyone know how to fix those?

I had to wait 20 minutes to get my reserved one. Currys is a joke. They won't let you pick up the reserved laptop from the click and collect counter. They told me to see someone in computing. But all the staff were busy, in the end they gave me a ticket, like being at the meat counter. Finally got served, I looked annoyed so they didn't try and sell me any warranties or anything. He still took ages to go and get it from the stock though! Terrible customer service, given the choice I wouldn't have bought it from them, but they are the only stockist of this laptop at that price in the UK. Ever since the demise of Comet, Tempo, BestBuy etc its pretty much DSG or nothing.

Yep. Went to store just before, the person couldn't see it at first, lucky I took a pic of it and showed it to him. He then took the laptop back to the office area where the lighting was different and he saw it.

Tried to get a refund there and then but couldn't find my order on their system! He said it was too new and not updated yet. I order yesterday online

I had the sales receipt (attachment in email) with me and despatch note that came with the laptop (you need to take both)

In the end I called customer services and explained the issue and they have arranged for dpd to collect tomorrow.

Well picked our up from Currys this morning, reserved to collect, and still had to wait an age for it to come 'down from the warehouse' so plenty of time to refuse all the extra sales dribble. But once it was down, and a quick no to the cover, transaction was done and we were out.

2 Jan 17 1 #425
Just came back from Currys after looking at both and can surely say 710 has much better quality screen. Brightness and contrast was way better then 510. (anyone could tell the difference). Yes it's £250 more but you get double ram, better and much faster i5 7th Gen processor and bigger hard drive with 2 Year John Lewis guarantee on top. Anyone who could spend the extra I would advice it's worth going for.
GGMI
2 Jan 17 #424
Can see both sides of the argument.

My missus has 4gb and when I used that, I find it too slow when using several apps at same time.

yes £250 more but double the ram, double the storage, backlit keyboard, sharper screen, slightly lighter. Plus you get a 2 year warranty from JL who I would feel safer buying from than Currys.

2 Jan 17 #413
You need an USB stick to create bootable drive because this laptop doesn't have DVD drive so you won't be able to use that. USB stick has to be completely empty before you do that, and all you have to do is download a windows media creation tool which will create it for you automatically. Once created you will have to reboot your laptop using advanced startup and then play it from usb stick, then the process is very simple following instructions on screen. As it is windows 10 it will recognise and activate itself automatically so no need to worry about that.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

There is a lot of tutorials out there on google, but It is very simple and basic.

To them that ask if this is worth the money, Or can they recommend anything cheaper This is about as cheap as a proper laptop gets at 250 quid, So is this worth just the extra 100 quid over that, That's an easy yes, If you look around at what's out there at the moment, For the components you get and quality, This thing is a bargain at £350.

Recommend doing a clean win10 install, improves performance as far as I've noticed, although fan still seems to be going on and off quite often with very basic system tasks. Warranty upgrade to two years is available at 24 pounds direct from Lenovo if anyone is interested. Might be useful considering that if things go wrong after one year it will be expensive to repair/might not even be worth repairing.

I find laptops like this a bit of a pain to use in all honesty, they're too big to use as a tablet and I just find them very frustrating to use on my lap laid in bed, I can never find a comfortable position, I just prefer the portability of a 9" tablet really. Would this laptop suit her needs, or is there others out there cheaper that will serve her just as well?

Its very bulky as a tablet tbh. I wont be using mine in that way much due to it being too cumbersome to bother with. Laptop and tent mode for me mainly.

I would take it in to the shop and get them to have a look. The screen shouldn't look noticably dark/dim at all really. In fact, i was just saying today that its more vibrant than my TV.

I'll push you. I was looking at the HP Stream and others like it for a Uni machine doubling as a media player. The screen is worth the extra on this. I believe anyone looking at two side by side would buy this.
Its more quality looking than pictures do justice, and also it runs really well (once set up). For £350 I am well pleased. I couldnt afford it and went back to a credit card after 2 years of being debt free, just to get this when it came up.
Read my previous post a few up for my brief overview on the good and bad.

Ok, I have a dilemma.
Going to travel/live/work in Auz for 5 months at least and so want something small, light, etc.
The dilemma is something basic like the MIIX at £150, 4GB Chromebook flip at £250 from JL (now with Play store), or this at £350.

Obviously it's what I use it for, which would be basic web browsing, emails, odd movie (kodi), and some document editing.

Less spend would be good, the move to chromeOS could be good/bad....£200 extra for this may be better spent?

I'm being indecisive but if someone could push me over the edge, that would be greatly appreciated!

I've had no troube with the touch pad, Found it to be very smooth and reponsive,at full brightness the screen is nice and about right for me, There is a bit of wobble in it when tapped, but not a real problem when used in conjunction with the keyboard.
As to weight, If your taking it to work or collage on the train, Walking around with it all day and stuff like that, Then you need something like a Zenbook or Macbook, But if like me and the furthest your gonna carry it is from downstairs to up, Then it's not a problem when you trade it against the quality, And it dose appear to be well built, And very good looking in white.

Those who you used topcashback, did it track? I ordered this when it was on £349, it tracked at 1% and I also used the £10 voucher so around £336.

However I then ordered another two separately, neither had tracked as the tcb was meant to be 9.9% over £249.

May raise a query with tcb as I'm a bit annoyed if it doesn't track.

Ive had mine a few days now and am delighted with it. The full HD screen was why I got this and I'm glad I did. I wont be able to go back to less than 1080 or IPS now.
The biggest flaw is the touchpad as far as I can see. It takes getting used to and can seem jittery at times. I plan to buy a cheap wireless mouse at some point.
Also, it is quite heavy for the size. Par for the course with these sort of laptops but just be aware I guess.
Overall, I feel like I have a £500 laptop for £350 which I hope will last me through Uni.

The i3 processor is quite good by all accounts. Its 'multi threaded'. You can look that up online. It basically means the laptop is specc'd to handle certain tasks well.
Ooh, also ive played a few non demanding games like Half Life 2, Postal 2 and Team Fortress and they run great, which is a nice bonus.

Regards PC World, I never buy anything in the actual shop and havent for ages due to aggressive sales techniques. Order online or pay and collect only. I recommend writing an email to pc world like I did, complaining about it, then stopping going in. A load of people do that, it'll stop.

Sounds like that might be settings. Ive found that it isnt the brightest screen but full brightness should look 'normal'. You can change the settings for plugged in and unplugged use so id suggest just trying that.

(settings from windows menu/display/advanced display settings...or something like that).

"Please trustworthy and knowledgeable sales person without any ulterior motive could you extol to me the many benefits of one of these monster hdmi cables. Oh and by the by are there any must have accessories and an extended warranty I could pay for ?" I would think you be just then that the nice folks would have to of taken me away for my own good  As Nick Ross used to say in closing for BBC 1 crime watch "don't have nightmares" Thanks to the op for posting have a good one every body.

To me the laptop is light. My old tablet was an HP tx 1000 series convertable and it weighed a ton. The fan on it was so loud it sounded like a hair dryer (no kidding). The fan in this lenovo is very quiet and doesn't turn on very much either/ Anybody got the touchscreen working with a stylus?

Yes, like the core m cpus, they're fanless as they don't create enough heat to require active cooling, whereas this cpu requires a fan... I hope that answers your question?

These convertible laptops tend to not feel like slender tablets in the hand but the weight and size difference will be the most noticeable, this is 1.8Kg and a 14 inch screen the Surface Pro 4 is a 12 inch screen and 786g, if you're going to be holding it up like a tablet day to day for longer periods of time you're gonna feel that extra 1Kg. But if it's mainly going to be used as a laptop and occasionally used as a tablet then these laptop 2 in 1s are fantastic especially in presentation mode which basically turns it into a tablet with a built in stand which if you were going to be using the Surface Pro mainly sat down with it's stand then this does the 'job' it would feel pretty similar.

Another thing to remember is the extra cost of the Surface Pros bring other benefits, they will have much better quality (colour and resolution) screens and also active pen support if that's something you'd want.
DomManley
31 Dec 16 #375
odd question, but in tablet mode does this feel really chunky? I like the idea of something like a surface pro so I can physically remove the keyboard, but if this feels pretty close but at half ish of the cost it might be a consideration.

I totally get they are completely different systems, but hopefully im making sense in my request.

Bit the bullet and ordered the white one last night. Arrived this morning. Quidco also confirmed so in total cost about £320 not bad at all.

2 issues so far. The shift key is too far on the right hand side. On every other PC and laptop I have ever used it is always there under the @ key but on this one is way far off. Guess I'll get used to that.

Second issue is I planned to use an SD card for storage expansion but the card only goes in half way so half of the card is hanging out, not good at all.

Buy a branded USB (Kingston gets my vote) - 16GB for £5
+
Download Windows 10 from here with the USB tool - https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
=
Your Windows 10 recovery disk

You can boot from the USB, wipe all partitions, and clean install. Though Windows may be able to grab all the drivers from the net, you may need another PC to download drivers if the laptop can't connect out.

Then again, will you actually use up your 100GB of space you got now? If not, and you'll be doing web browsing and office work, then sod it.
welshboy06
31 Dec 16 1 #360
If you already have the USB stick from curry's then I'd suggest using that, as creating your own will just add time.
Possibly the easiest way to reclaim the space you need won't even involve a re-install.

1 - Open up the Computer Managment program (Right Click start)
2 - Click Disk Management
3 - As you can see there are 3 recovery partitions after the C: partition.

Using diskpart (Command Line Tool) you can delete these 3 partitions and then re-claim that space by the C: Drive (Approx 14gb)

http://www.disk-partition.com/articles/delete-recovery-partition-4348.html - Follow the instructions for diskpart. Beware though, double check each and every partition before you delete and commit any changes.

The blurry text is apparently a 'known' Windows 10 issue. Windows 10 uses a different way to scale as compared to Windows 8 especially for high definition displays. The laptop by default is set to scale 150% (Right click on the desktop and select 'Display Settings'). Change the scale factor from 150% to 125%.. that should make the text in some of the apps more clearer. Hope this helps.

On the fan noise, I noticed it only when you have too many tabs open in Chrome specifically.. the laptop is quite silent when I use other browsers (Edge, Opera).

Bought one in black yesterday. As others have stated defo no backlit keypad on this model.

Really quick start up, stuck on an old copy of Office 2010 and a few other favourite bits and pieces including Kodi and all installed no problem.

Have tried the Bluestacks Android emulator - had never used one of these before, and actually only became aware of it from a previous post in this thread (thanks again "flamingmoose") Absolutely superb and this really has given this machine the perfect balance for me now as was looking for something to replace an ageing laptop and also save me having to carry around my Tablet - the Bluestacks has given me access to my most used android apps. Another post also suggested Remix OS which I may play around with sometime too.

All in all a really nice piece of kit for the money, I had toyed with getting the HDD version but as all my films, music etc. are already on a couple of hard drives wasn't really bothered about the limited onboard storage, suppose can stick an SD card in for extra storage if required.

Only snag so far - operator error - keep forgetting it's got a touchscreen

Right click on the Windows button and select Computer Management. Then click Disk management. You'll see that 104gb is usable and the other 14gb is dedicated to recovery partitions etc.. It just means that should you wipe the hard drive or have any issues with OS you'll be able to factory reset.

If you wish to free up some more space, you can create a USB recovery drive, re-partition or erase the entire drive and re-install using custom options (That wont create a 12gb recovery partition)

Yes. If you buy a standard SSD, it most likely won't fit, as I found out when trying to upgrade my Yoga 700. There are ways around it though. One suggestion is dismantling the SSD drive itself. It may void the warranty of the drive, but the case isn't really necessary.

Even upgrading the hdd to ssd was the most stressful switch I've ever encountered, the Lenovo bios is locked down and you have to jump through a few hoops to get it to boot from USB. Cloning the drive didn't seem to work either so I had to do a fresh install (possibly for the best anyway) and because it's an x64 version of W10 I had to reformat my existing ssd during the switch-over... Google how-tos took a bashing last night!

Went to have a look at this today and was quite concerned about the flex in the screen. Could be as it was the demo model and had been abused by the little ones perhaps but it looked too delicate for my liking. On the subject of trackpads it always amazes me how manufactures skimp on a most important part with exception of Apple perhaps. Quite a nice spec but I will be hanging onto my hard earned for a little longer.

Bought this today in store, SSD capacity advertised online is 128GB but system says 104GB capacity

Anyone else notice this?

29 Dec 16 #292
Is that the i5 version?

I haven't used that one, but looking at the specs it is the perfect combo of the two I posted about - the only real difference is the JBL speakers (both ones I wrote about have Harman audio). The other difference is that it's i5 (with 8gb ram) so combined with the ssd this will be a fair bit faster than the other 2 above.

Depends what you're looking for? But nah, I wouldn't say it justifies the extra £250.

Would you reccomend the 710 at JL that has the higher spec and backlit as being worth the extra 250 squid?

i'm possibly in a good place to comment on a few of the things in this thread, having had the 1TB HDD, the 120GB SSD and now the 1TB HDD version again... all since Xmas day. (Don't ask).

Anyway, a few points:

- The SSD version does NOT have a backlit keyboard (the HDD version does).
- The trackpad on the HDD version is far better (as is the typing "feel"), the trackpad on the SSD version is more flimsy feeling and felt wobbly to me.
- The SSD version has no fan. The HDD version has a fan (a loud one!) but I'm hoping that settles down now that I've replaced the hard drive and put in a solid state one.
- The screen (1080p) on the SSD version is much crisper, as you'd expect - it's very nice to look at.

All in, I would have loved a hybrid of both but Lenovo have dropped the ball a bit - I guess they're trying to appeal to all customers, but at the most efficient price-point. If anyone has any questions (on either machine) just ask and I'll be happy to try and help.

A note on the customer service - it depends where you go. One of the shops I tried to return the first unit to was absolutely horrendous, no movement on "store policy" as I had opened the box and they claimed they could't re-sell. The other shopw gave me no problems at all and were just happy to sell me the best laptop for my needs, they were very helpful. They did (which I thought strange at the time) remind me to buy a 32GB USB to create a back-up, but I never thought any more of that.

The people being told they need to buy the USB with the laptop. No, you don't. It's not a selling feture of the machine, it's not even an offered "bundle", tell the shop to do one and report them if that's the case. Or if you really want the laptop, speak to the manager of the store. I have a feeling these "bundles" are being sold as a way of justifying the laptop box being opened (ie it being a returned item) as I was told that once the box is open, the store couldn't sell the returned laptop - even if it wasn't used. So if they do this, the can say the box was opened to created this recovery usb AND make a skin on the top.

Anyway, hope this helps. Great laptop (both SSD and HDD) for the money - although the backlit keyboard is what sold it for me.

Got mine earlier, the USB on the left hand side is very tight, literally have to force the USB in and then it does work, is this normal or should I return?

Also I didn't use Quidco, will I be able to go into store and ask them to refund me and literally purchase it online straight away via quidco?

Yeah the i3 CPU should be able to run Photoshop fine, but people would ideally say you want 8GB of RAM but it depends what you're doing, the main problem is that the screen will be nowhere near professionally colour accurate like an expensive professional laptop, general editing will be fine but if you need it for colour accurate work then look elsewhere, or use an external colour accurate monitor.

Thanks OP. I bought the black one too. I was also been sold a USB stick for £59.99 which I refused. They offer further discount on the USB.
My opinion of the machine is very good spec for the price. The 1080p IPS screen on a 14 inch is good. Mouse pad is typical for laptop. Right mouse button is not always responsive. Touch screen is very responsive. But far too heavy for tablet use

if the item is faulty OR DOES NOT MATCH THE DESCRIPTION as in the misleading photographs there is no reason for them to refuse you as you will not see this till you open it. Its their mistake so you should not pay for anything in returning it. In theory I have had refund when I've complained about things like this (but not from currys.)

29 Dec 16 #277
I just visited my local Curry's to try this out. My store had two models(i5 and i3)
With regards to the touchpad, the i5 version had a slightly jittery touchpad, but it was still usable.
The i3 however, had a better touchpad, oddly. It was still nothing spectacular but what you'd expect for a 350 pound laptop.

As for the laptop itself, it is fast and snappy due to the i3 and the screen is superb. However, power users may want to consider swapping out the RAM for 8GB.

I am still a bit reluctant to buy due to Curry's inflexible refund policy. Apparently, once I open it and use it, I can't get a refund.

Those being told they have to buy with a usb stick should be complaining to the store manager and threatening to go to trading standards. The item is advertised on TV and on their website for £349. Nowhere does it state you have to buy it with the usb stick and pay an extra £35.

I ordered mine online but if i'd gone into a shop and been treated like that I would have made one hell of a scene in front of all the other shoppers to make it clear what they were doing was illegal.

I collected it yesterday, it is touch screen as able up as a tablet. It has no backlit display. The USB creates a back up of windows 10. All you need to do to create the same thing is explained below.

https://mspoweruser.com/how-to-create-a-bootable-usb-drive-for-windows-10/

You do not need the update. I just got roped into it. Plus they also give you a voucher for 25% off a case. They are currently selling a HP one with optical mouse for £19.99 ( was allegedly £39.99). That cost me £15. If you need it, then it's a good buy.

It's not worth it, even if it's for free. The hard drive has a recovery partition.

Those are generic Lenovo press shots, they've obviously used the wrong ones, look at the black version it clearly has a number pad but it doesn't have one, this model does not have a backlit keyboard.

Looks like they've removed the pictures of the black version with a number pad which is good, but if you look at the white one it shows a generic US keyboard but you'll get a UK keyboard.

I am also looking at this, currently have a surface pro 3, had for a couple of years, i5, 128gb ssd, fancy a change, as it's not really knee friendly, don't use the pen. Though it's a smooth runner. Would love the hp spectre to pricey. Probably think I am mad wanting to change the pro. Though the specs are lower than my pro, but with an earlier i5 gen.

I am also looking at the hp 360, at 499 which has 8gb and an i5 though the build quality doesn't look as good, any thoughts. I only use it for web, word docs, surfing etc, any thoughts. Just seems on paper a good buy which does surprise me for pc world

Ive been looking for about 18 months and this is the one ive gone for. I need a laptop for uni this year (as a MATURE student) and had phases of going from the little cheap HP Streams etc, to spending a lot more for a real expensive one. For me, this one is exactly right. It will be more than enough for a general office 365 machine, will be great for research etc. My secondary use is very much film watching, so it was the screen quality/resolution that stopped me buying any of the others. This IPS full HD tipped me over the edge. I wasnt looking to spend quite as much originally, i'm very poor, but for me, I cant see a better deal coming along very soon. I stress 'for me' mind you. Like everything else, its only worth the money if it'll do what you want it to do.
GGMI
29 Dec 16 #242
I have been in the shop to try and:
It is definitely touch screen.
Doesn't appear to have a backlight (not surprising for this price)

I am really torn whether to buy it, I have been looking at a laptop for ages, I need for general browsing but sometimes use a few things at the same time. 4gb ram and only 128gb ssd are downsides but you can't really expect more than 128 for a laptop this price, looking at 256gb with an IPS screen you're looking at paying a minimum of £200 more if not more. The biggest downside for me using though is probably the touch pad, I just worry that it will really annoy me using it daily. It's one of those things you don't really think about when purchasing but could be really annoying.

The pros are that it is really good value, 14" is probably perfect for me. SSD which I definitely want as old style hard drives look to be phased out. IPS screen. Battery life is decent.

Ahh, it is really touch and go, the fact that I am even considering buying it shows that it is a decent deal as I don't part with my cash easily on things like these (I have been looking on/off for a couple of years).

I can't speak for sound but battery life would be won by the iPad hands down, speed is more complex and they're still very different things the computer has more power behind it, but ultimately websites and apps would load about the same however things you would use an app for on the iPad you would probably use the website for on the computer, if you have an iPhone then that's what an iPad is like but bigger.

There is one more important thing, iPads over time as they get new iOS updates become (painfully) slow which there is nothing you can do about, you can't even go back to a faster version to get the speed back, a computer on the other hand looked after has the potential to stay fast (in relation to the day you bought it) indefinitely.

One of the staff tried to flog me the AMD version without the SSD but with 8GB RAM for £500. The staff all have a pitch that AMD is cheaper because they don't advertise! AMD have been falling behind Intel for many years, you will have an inferior, heat producing inefficient CPU if you get that version. Anyhow somebody talk me out of buying it. Surely the chinese laptops from gearbest or ebay are higher spec and cheaper too?

To get into bios, shut down the system and then use a paperclip or something to poke the hole on the left side of the laptop next to the card reader (called the NOVO "button" or something). It boots into bios. No idea why they make it so difficult.

My 13-13.3" sleeve arrived from amazon, it's well padded and fits PERFECTLY (just a cm or two of wiggle room max). https://www.amazon.co.uk/Plemo-13-MacBook-Surface-Ultrabook/dp/B01AW66PMS/ref=sr_1_10?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1482946156&sr=1-10

Just looking at the white a nd black options and noticed the pictures of the keyboards are different. Black has a number pad to the right. White does not. Also the specs are slightly different. 1.75kg white, 1.8kg black. 8.5 hrs white, 8 black. Also keyboard says backlit but people how have it say not.
Anyone confirm if they are the same, particularly the keyboards. prefer the black look but dont want the numberpad really.

I bought this laptop a few weeks ago before the sale and i do not recommend it.. kept restarting with a error message "Critical process died". Had enough of that happening and returned it for a full refund. Currys / PC world also tried to trick me saying the only one in stock is ones which is preset up and Ineed to pay an extra £35 for a recovery memory stick .. which I told them was ****.. I said I'm not paying for something I don't need, started to walk out and they immediately offered to reduce it to £10..

This is not really for them. It is a basic touch and no better than any tablet.
Someone in design would need a more flexible controlled input like on a surface pro using a special pen or top of the range ipads that also use a special pen. They take into account angle of pen and pressure applied etc. these will start at about double the price.

Interested to here how you find it I want to photoshop. Some light autocad and browse revit files for work. It must also play rocksmith 2014. Would the i3 handle that?
I was also looking at the 710 and 900 but I do love a bargain. Looking at the specs the CPU benches higher then my desktop i5 650. £250 difference is enough to make it a serious option. Thanks in advance

Can anyone advise if the touchscreen portion for this is any good for artists/designers. I have a graphics tablet already for digital drawings but I just can't get used to the disconnect between the hand and screen so I'm wondering if a tablet like this would be a better solution? The item description doesn't specify anything about art/design specifically so I'm guessing it doesn't but if anyone knows otherwise I'd love to hear your experiences!

Mine's only turned its fan on once for a short while in the last few hours, during a particular intensive bit of set up. Rest of the time it's been totally silent!

No flex or wobble on my touchscreen with usual usage, and I'm a big fan of the W10 touch interface so use it lots.

Also in my experience W10 is much better with memory use than previous versions. Runs fine on my little Click Mini with 2GB! When I've checked on Task Manager on this one, with all my usual apps now installed and running, it's been at about 50% memory usage. Worst case (from the Lenovo service manual I've seen), it's easy to upgrade memory.

That's the a standard Windows 10 set up, just go to display settings, everything is usually scaled upwards to 125%/150% at the beginning, just move the slider back down to 100%.

Anyone used the laptop fully for some estimates on the battery life?

I picked one up this afternoon, and it's a superb machine for the money!

My old MBP has been on its last legs for ages, and so I've been pondering a W10 2-in-1 instead for a while. I've got a Lenovo X1 Carbon for work and a super portable tiny Tosh Click Mini, and am a big fan of W10 machines with touchscreens as a result. I wanted full HD and an SSD and had been looking at the 710/910 sort of end of things for a while. Decided though at this price and given the typical workload it'll be used for, an i3/4GB would in reality be enough. Currys also had a 710 with i7 in store, and TBH I couldn't see that much difference between the build on them!

Took just a few minutes to set up, and it's flying along, and super quiet too (another reason why I decide to not go for the 710 offer in JL given its ongoing issues with fan noise). If I'm honest it feels much snappier than my X1 Carbon which has an i7 and 16GB!

Just received mine. Does not feel or work like a £350 laptop (I've had plenty). Feels sturdy and runs like a dream. The touchpad is woeful, but most are. The touchscreen is responsive and accurate. The picture quality is superb. The laptop runs silent. May be more RAM and increased HDD at some point, but for £350 (well £340 for me as the code worked) it is an absolute steal.

27 Dec 16 #183
Before getting all over excited how good is this laptop? It has a fan. Is it noisy? It only has 4GB of RAM. Windows 10 eats memory for breakfast. The Yoga 300 had a very flimsy screen that wobbled when you used the touchscreen. I hope this is better?

Really impressed with it. Zips along nicely. Really strange being able to tap on a windows screen!

Sound quality is really good and so is the picture quality. First thing I did was uninstall mcafee.

If you're in doubts certainly has my recommendation.

I'm really torn between this and the 710 at John Lewis. Big price difference the 710 is by preferred but it's £250 difference or £350 for the i7 version. 710 seems to have a better screen from a quick go in currys just now and series 7 processors. Want to photoshop. Some light autocad and browse revit files for work. It must also play rocksmith 2014. Would the i3 handle that? Don't want to commit and then regret not getting the up grade but it's a fair price difference!
Any help great fully received. I want a lightweight touchscreen laptop basically!

It depends what you're after. The one you bought doesn't come with a touch screen, so depends if you'd use it. The one you bought has a 2TB hard drive, this only a 128gb. Its a case of size over speed. For browsing and a few games the 128gb is perfect for me. Your laptop has a quad core A10 (AMD CPU) and 8gb of ram. This only has a dual core i3 with 4gb. The i3 and 4gb of ram are ideal for browsing and word processing etc, but for more intense programs your laptop would be more suitable.

Just tried the FM17 Demo and the game played perfectly fine. I even played the first pre-season game and the animation/game play had no issues at all. Increasing the game sim speed didn't cause any issues either.

One thing that bugged me is I couldn't use the swipe gestures to swap to another app or to load the on screen keyboard. I had to fold the keyboard out to type in my details etc. A non issue once you've gone past the setup.

Build quality seems much better than other commentators are suggestion
Touch screen seems great so far and I love the flexibility of it.
The 6th gen i3 is surprisingly capable and haven't run in to any issues re slowness.
The SSD means that the thing boots up in a few seconds and feels really nippy.

All in all for the price (£349 as I couldn't be bothered to wait for delivery) I am extremely pleased. Now I just need to test a few android emulators to get the best of both worlds!

You need to download a genuine windows 10 iso 64 bit onto a usb stick. Enter the bios, disable secure boot and alter to boot from usb. You may have to create a uefi usb bootable disc first using a programme called RUFUS or similar. Make sure you download the drivers required from lenovo first. I always put mine on a separate usb. If yo use rufus it will delete everything on the usb. It's all quite easy but it can be a bit of messing about and the way of doing it can vary from machine to machine. My lenovo miix was easy to do. My yoga 300 not so easy and I lost the secure boot which makes no difference in how the laptop boots. My Asus t300chi was a nightmare but got it in the end. Note you will use your one key recovery but in the scheme of things, it's no great loss. There is plenty of info available. Some say the only proper way to do a clean install is to delete all the partitions when you re-install windows. That is when you lose the recovery option but it gives you more disc space and in my opinion with windows 10 you don't need a one key recovery as you can easily create your own recovery disc.

You don't have to worry about losing your windows key. It's locked to the motherboard and recorded by Microsoft. Just make sure you windows 10 software is activated before you do any clean installs.

Have a look on howtogeek.com

Just booted mine up. Seems nice, much more solid build/chassis than the last sub £400 laptop I purchased. Had a dodgy looking BIOS update after the first couple of boots; that was the only unexpected hiccup so far.

Usual crapware from McAfee/Lenovo removal seemed to be the only other basic setup needed.

So far so good.

Online reviews look good. Ive ordered one based on decent reports. As these are usually mid priced you often get 'premium'buyers expecting £1500 quality for £500 I find. This is why I think you get a real mix of reviews. I generally buy cheap stuff thats 2 years out of date so I'm sure this will seem luxurious for me. The Yoga and Flex lines are fairly well regarded. Any problems with the hinge etc should be covered under warranty anyway. Buy on credit card for extra protection.
This one to me is a no brainer for uni/media playing.

My yoga 2 has been awful. Constant overheating, usb ports snapping due to brittle plastic, and now it's out of warranty the screws breaking free on the hinges causing the case to split. Hope they have fixed all these problems in these newer models.....

The link 2 posts above is to Dell Outlet machines - I have bought 8 in the last 5 weeks - the highest I paid was £399 ex VAT and the lowest £348 ex VAT (included discount). These are listed as refurb or scratch and dent but I could safely say I have purchased well in excess of 300 Dell Outlet machines over the years and not one has come with a mark on it. The 3 year warranty included helps too.

There are only 2 available at the minute - they probably will not reload any new ones until they are back to work. Both of the ones available only have 128Gb SSD and 4Gb, I would hold out until a 256Gb SSD and 8Gb appear, remember there is still a 15% dicount available using code MERRY.

Lenovo yoga tab pro 2, got it for 290. KK out box, upgrades to lollipop.

13.3 WQHD Tablet with Inbuilt Projector , Intel Atom Z3745 Quad Core Processor, 13.3" WQHD Touch Screen, Android 4.4 KitKat, 2GB RAM, 32GB Storage, Bluetooth, Integrated WiFi.

25 Dec 16 #67
Hmm

£349 - 10 voucher = 339
340 in gift cards costs 316.20
316.10 to buy this, and then another 1.1% cash back from tcb @ 339 = 3.4 so over all this will cost just 312.70
Just need to put the money in the bank first.

I would prefer to spend on a Dell Latitude 7350 (13.3") 2-in-1 with 256Gb SSD, 8Gb, M-5Y71, 3YR NBD warranty - these have been sitting on Outlet for weeks now at between £380 - £450. Much much better value and excellent build quality (what you are paying for in a Latitude I suppose)
FrugalFergal
25 Dec 16 3 #62
Incredible value. I have the 900 series with the i7 but this is far far far better bang for buck. A better ultrabook than my macbook air, better tablet than my iPad, 3 second boot up, ports and expansion galore, amazing premium build and Windows 10 which gets better by the day. This should be scorching!

I ordered one from Amazon before and can confirm the mouse pointer jumped around the screen which was annoying. The screen was pretty good and very clear but not very bright, eventually it was returned as the screen packed in so Amazon refunded. I think for £349 it's a pretty good buy though, even with its faults

That model is £50 more expensive, the APU is only slightly better in gaming, other than that, this deal is better in every way, from the better overall CPU, has FullHD screen, and built in SSD which will make it feel faster than the unit ith a mechanical drive, all that for £50 less.

somewhere in the product description says:

" .......
Flexible 2 in 1 computing

The Lenovo YOGA 510 has a 360° rotating hinge which lets you move between four modes in seconds.

Laptop mode gives you complete control of your PC using the keyboard, while flipping the screen round switches to touchscreen-only tablet mode for fast browsing and comfortable viewing.

There are two stand modes too which let you get extra-comfortable when watching films or playing touchscreen. However you like to work and play, the YOGA 510 has you covered.
......."

They say that they order unique kit to fit the customer demands. The kit the order is "exclusive" to them however, so if you know it is a DSG product number then it was made for PCW/Currys. The main reason is so it becomes impossible to price match. If you watch carefully then sometimes they have far too much stock so offload their kit to bulk resellers, then you can price match. I know that they do it for price matching because I had to fight for a price match one day with the store manager saying it was impossible for another retailer to have said product, he point blank refused to price match it as he said it shouldn't be sold anywhere else.
