Cool! Nearly booked a Crowne Plaza tonight, but will hold off and see what comes along on the 4th. Got their credit card for the gold status which usually bags a bit of an upgrade!
Any idea if these rooms would work in conjunction with the Accellerate programs? I'm a few nights short of 41k points!

Hasn't the Accelerate latest round just finished a week or two ago? Anyway the answer is they should  I have to stay 6 days a week to hit my bonus now. Needless to say, Spire Elite membership lol
EDIT: I stand corrected, next Accelerate has been announced.

Ha upgrade, I've been spire elite stayed nearly 150 nights this year in variety of hotels and I hardly ever get an upgrade it's a bit of a joke in comparison to Hilton where I'm also diamond and get upgrade every time and access to executive lounges.
Debating giving up staying with IHG they are pretty useless, anyway staying in London kesington tomorrow for new year, let's see if I win the lottery and get an upgrade!!

Accelerate has finished now for Q4. You can already register for Accelerate 2017 Q1 which starts in January.
On the upgrade front, you'd be lucky to get a room upgrade on gold status... it's hit or miss getting an upgrade on spite elite status, never mind platinum or gold... depends where you stay I guess.

We've been fairly lucky, got the executive floor with the free drinks and stuff in the HI in San Jose Costa Rica, and had a few sea views or upgraded rooms in the USA. I guess it probably depends where you're looking and how busy they are on those nights. Got a friend who's a manager in a UK HI Express and she said that they will always give gold or above an upgrade if it's available. We don't make enough qualifying stays to get any better status than that, but definitely noticed an improvement since getting the gold thing, just for the sake of having a credit card I barely use in my purse!
Yeah, it's up to the end of April on the Accelerate promo they've sent me recently. Trouble is that I tend to book most of the rooms on either a travel industry discount, or a Friends & Family discount, and neither are eligible for points or bonuses! Might be worth a few cheap nights away though if the sale prices can be combined with the points promos, cheers!

Goodness! Do you every go home?! Good luck with the new year upgrade, I think they should just give you your own hotel for the amount of time you're spending in them

I shall be watching this with interest as I need to book a 8 night stay in London mid to late January. I am Platinum status with IHG which I get by paying £99 a year for the Barclaycard IHG rewards premium Visa. Is it worth paying £99 for?
In my opinion yes - I usually spend 20-25 nights`with IHG a year so wouldnt gain Platinum status otherwise. I've found the best upgrades are in far east hotels like the Crowne Plaza Kuala Lumpur where we were upgraded to Corner suite and had full access to the Executive lounge with free food and booze available all day long. Plus the room was only £60 a night.
Agree with OP regarding upgrades in USA - particularly useful in HIExpress over there which are usually much better than their UK counterparts and have more room types including suites. Platinum seems to go a long way over there!
Uk upgrades have tended to be 1 room category upgrade but not necessarily lounge access. This happened to us at Crowne Plaza Heathrow where we were upgraded to executive room but werent allowed access to the Lounge.

I don't think they do the Barclaycard any more, as I asked what options there were, so keep hold of it! I've got the Creation Card which has no fee but apart from Gold status plus a few bonus IHG points here and there, very few benefits. As I said, I know gold is no great shakes, but it does separate you from the masses who have either no card, or just the basic one, and has made a difference for us in the USA and Costa Rica.
I can forward a friends and family link by PM that often bags much better prices on rooms if it's of any interest? Usually (but not always) about 20% cheaper than the cheapest rate online, but forfeits reward points. Hasn't affected upgrades for us, but there's a chance it might do. Although conversely, we did once get an upgrade just on the basis we were 'friends/family' of staff.
