I've owned a vive since release. In all that time I've put many people into it, my window cleaner and the heating engineer servicing my boiler were two of the most unusual ones, and every single person has been amazed by the experience and the tech. Not a single one of them mentioned resolution or screen door.
Last night I played Raw Data co-op for the first time with a good friend who got a vive for Christmas. I'm still a little in awe at how amazing an evening that was. At the end when we took off our headsets at 2am and headed for bed he text me and said it felt like I had just left his house. We live 200 miles apart.
The future is here now. It's not perfect yet, but it's plenty good enough for now.

Very negative thread. I advise people have a read of the Vive reddit because it's full of feedback from people who've actually tried and fallen in love with the tech. You can now design your own VR environments from inside the Vive, I can't wait to unbox mine
Seems no price on the page, nowhere to click to buy one, you have to phone someone. What year is this? :P

Hoping for an upgraded model with a lower RRP by next Christmas.
I was planning to skip this gen as I've still got a DK2 which seemed pretty expensive at £350 back in 2014! (At least I've had my money's worth).

There is a pc world deal posted which also had links to various other retailers doing the offer, incuding scan / overclockers etc. vive 2 rumours for ces 2017 were also just "rumours". obviously it will come out eventually but live for now

Heat added as is a great price but honestly I couldn't see VR being the next big thing. Bought a Rift last month and sold it on shortly after, 2016 definitely isn't the year of VR they claimed it would be. If it was more affordable, easier to plug and play and had the support of big studios it may take off but sadly at the minute it is genuinely a tech demo and true VR won't be for years yet.
I don't know about the Vive but the resolution, screen tearing and sickness from the Rift were horrendous!
With a GTX 1080 aswell, the tech has a long way to come.

Having tried out a Rift on a friends 1080 on games like DCS which are pretty badly optimised for VR at the moment, there wasn't any tearing or sickness, I'd worry about the setup being configured wrong. I wasn't overly impressed with the resolution though
cmyers1293
28 Dec 16#11
I played Subnautica, Keep Talking & Nobody Explodes, Elite:Dangerous and I was done. The resolution was a massive disappointment, it's a main selling point but you can clearly make out individual pixels. Yeah Oculus was a pain to set up but the Vive is another kettle of fish, lighthouses drilled into the walls...no thanks.

I'm so very tempted, as I have a bookcase and a lamp I can rest them on in just the right places, but sadly the card I want to pay for it with is still in the mail, so I'll have to make do without
The resolution will have to go extremely high to remove the screen door effect. I have a couple of ideas but I should probably patent them first :stuck_out_tongue:

I got so giddy when I researched the Rift and when it was in the mail, i re-arranged my game room to accommodate it but it was like a gimmick. During the initial demo the Rift shows you going through various scenarios, I was grinning like a Cheshire cat like 'This is awesome'. That feeling was short lived. It would be cheaper to buy a PSVR and PS4 for a total of like 450 then if you don't want them you can trade them into CEX. Cex are selling PSVR right now for a ridiculous price considering it is easily accessible at RRP.
Do it! Do it good sir!

Ah well, you wait until the holodeck is here - meantime I'll enjoy my Vive when it arrives tomorrow along with the lighting tripods I can put up and down in a jiffy for the lighthouses...
As for the pixels, even if you had two 4k monitors strapped to your eyeballs then of course you will be able to make out individual pixels at that kind of distance. You'll be waiting a long time for what it is you seem to want.

People say removing the foam eliminates it.
Or pulling the foam further down.
There's also foam that's less thicker but I don't really see a problem with screen door effect.
You've got to measure your eye distance as well, this helps with a few problems.
K1LLER HORNET
28 Dec 161#19
The lighthouses can be placed just sitting on a tall object or on tripods.
I've got one of mine on a cupboard and the other is on a gorillapod on a shelf.
The Vive is a much better experience due to roomscale.
Oculus only really seems to give a head tracking experience out of the box.
The oculus touch controllers appear to be superior although I have not tried them myself.

28 Dec 16#20
The Vive is FAR better than any other offering but try before you buy, there's a few locations to demo it in the UK I believe.
It really is the first solid step to actual VR. It's very immersive.
Although, personally I'd not spend so much on any offering unless I was a hardcore gamer again and had a serious chunk of spare cash! But I also wouldn't buy any other having used them all (We have a Vive at work). I'd also wait until 2nd/3rd gen.
Instead of wall mounting you can use any standard camera screw fitting. For example a clamp, gorilla pod or a extending stand.
I bought a couple of flexible clamps on Amazon for £11 each, also stands for about £20 each.
*Lighthouses are also the most expensive part to replace, so if you do balance them... be careful!
cmyers1293
28 Dec 161#22
Its not immersive when a face consists of about 50 pixels. It's not immersive if I spend ages running through various programs etc just to get started.

28 Dec 161#23
I've got a Vive. While I agree that individual pixels are noticeable and experiences will be better with 4k per eye (eventually), in my opinion you're selling VR short.
My best experiences have been with driving sims (dirt rally/assetto corsa) and cockpit games (elite dangerous). These are incredible in VR and soo much more immersive than on a monitor, and for driving sims at least, I'm better at the game in VR than not.

Rift with controller is completely different to room scale with tracked hands and unless there is something like text an awkward distance away you forget about resolution pretty quickly (and you can super sample games which looks considerably better) just for people who have been put off from seated games with a controller as I also thought they were cool but didn't exactly do much for me before I tried the vive

I can certainly see the pixels when putting on the headset but when fully immersed in game I just don't notice that at all. Being in the game is just so magical. Just had my first game of Raw Data on Vive at it totally blew me away. PSVR is awesome but Vive is on another level. Vive is all about standing up and immersing in the game world. PSVR is all sit down on your sofa and even then you need to resynch your position as it drifts all the time. Vive also seems to offer really large library of experiences and games. Of course tide might turn as PSVR has sold 750k headsets so PS Store might be the place to be for content editors in the future.
I think experiencing current gen VR is very subjective. Some people get motion sickness and some can't get pass the screen door effect.
Note that you need to have a space for the room scale experience. My study with two desks on opposite sides of the room doesn't leave a big are in the middle. I might need to convince my wife we need to reorganise the study

You don't use a phone with this - the Vive has its own integrated display and its driven by a PC rather than a phone. You'll need a fairly powerful PC to be able to use the Vive though with a minimum GTX 970 graphics card.
Depending on your model of Samsung phone, the Gear VR is a cheap and pretty decent option to get a feel for VR.

Same here, on lighthouse is sitting on a mini tripod and the other a gorillia pod. Since it's a standard tripod thread they offer there's plenty of solutions to get them in the right place without using permanent fixtures.
I agree about roomscale, I bought the Vive but planned to use it seated however once I got room scale working I was really impressed with it and feel it's a level above a seated/standing VR experience. Some reviewers favoured the Occulus controllers initially but user experiences I've read after seem so-so between the Vive and Occulus controllers while the Vive roomscale system seems much more advanced than the Occulus one.

Your loss matey. It takes me a few minutes to get it all up and running.
The screen door effect is noticeable but once you're in a game you should be focusing on the action and your brain should fill in the gaps. But if you can't stand it then it's best to save your money.
Maybe check back in a few years and it maybe up to your expectations by then.

It's something you can really describe to people but I know what you mean, I found Raw Data co-op quite eerie because it knows where your head is and what direction it's pointing and the same for your hands so the virtual version of you is scarily accurate and really feels like they are there with you. VR is seen mainly as a gaming technology at the moment but I think there is so much potential for other uses which we're seeing glimpses of, I like the idea in Big Screen where you can share your screen with other people and talk to them using Vive mic and headphones as if they were in the room with you.

I have a rift and yes the resolution needs to be 4k but once you get used to it its awesome. project cars is brilliant if your into racing but dead and buried its the most fun I've had in years. it's the next level of gaming just like super Mario 64 on the n64 moved things on. this its it. but you need the touch controllers. there are way enough games you keep you interested and you can steam Xbox one games to it you view like a cinema screen. 4k and beyond would make this perfect but it's here to stay and can only get better. psvr has worse resolution so you cannot use that you compare. roll on 5 years time......

you obviously read my post since that was where the "expected" was mentioned yet you chose to ignore the edit where I acknowledged the button pointed to the wrong item(I did try to update it but you can't) I added a direct link to the deal (which now points to a 404 since the deal has expired) initially you could also buy through the "Get Deal" but at the RRP, Scan changed this later to a "call us" I guess to avoid people missing out on the deal without having to update their database..

Wonderfully informative.
I, like many, expect to be able to click the link to a deal to actually be able to click and buy it, at the price advertised. Deals should only be posted once you can confirm the actual price.
You posted before knowing what the price was "Currently selling for 759, so expect the price to be 659 tomorrow."
Why bother posting when you don't know what the price will be? Since you got it wrong and the link was nonsense you should have deleted/expired and reposted with something remotely sensible.

Comfort of the headset can be an issue. I've modified my straps and replaced them with a welding mask harness which takes all the weight off my face. Played for hours at a time without a problem.
Being in your feet all night after a long day working hard can be tiring but the payoff is immense. There's also plenty to do sitting down so it's not a big deal.
I sometimes see people complain that vr doesn't do what they have been doing for years playing PC or consoles, and what they say is mostly right. But what they don't yet see is that virtual reality is a brand new thing and that new rules are being written.

You could have got the deal since as you pointed you could have "called" them. How many instore only deals can you get by clicking the link?
I wasn't sure what the forum etiquette was when I noticed the OCUK additional discount, but thought it would be counter intuitive to flood the forum with niche deals so chose instead to include it in the main thread updating the title to reflect
