I wanted to get a set for my son - but all the sockets are 12 sided, I personally hate using them - if only they were 6 sided as I have a lot of halford pro sets and they are really good quality, still own the set my mum bought me 25 years ago -I will wait for a better set! (still got a week ans a bit)

This is a great toolkit, the box isn't as sturdy as it looks (I use a strap around mine to keep it closed) and some sockets will fall out of their holder in transit.
The tools are AMAZING - great value.
You need to present the receipt if you want to exchange any part - so keep it safe.

Halfords now email you a receipt so you've always got a copy for the future, but I've never had to show a receipt for when I've had to have the odd socket replaced over the years
Oh, and this socket set is £60 trade card price so bargain at £50

I recently had my 150 piece set stolen from the garage, bought when this deal was one:
I thought the warranty was now extended to the ratchet mechanism (although on an initial search, I can't find anything that says it explicitly is or isn't covered...)

I'm 99% sure you're correct, the previous warranty used to specifically exclude the ratchet but it is now covered. If you search on their website for the ratchet on it's own, you can see the tool warranty is there as well.
Having said that, even with the previous warranty I do know of people who have returned broken ratchets and they've replaced them no problem.

I wonder if I would have got a replacement (if I had kept the box) - my set was at least 25 years old and I recently through out the box as it was plastic and the joint between the top and the bottom had broke - I bought a tall tool cupboard and decided to put all the sockets that have survived into a draw as my new complete 6 sided set have replaced it (but I lost the receipt years ago)!
all these years and the ratchet still works well!

From my experience, there is no need to show any receipt.
Only they sell those bits and on every socket there is engraved label.
I do indeed keep my receipts but have not been asked to produce them.
Saying that, nothing has been damaged so far (3 years of car DIY-ing) but needed a replacement as in my set one socket size was missing (there were two same size sockets instead of two different ones).
Good deal. Problem is I don't need it (want it though...)

I got my set in the early 90`s & my box hinge split as well (was about 15 years old at the time), I took the box back (with no receipt) & they gave me a new box! Seems to be holding up better than the original too.
The breakages I`ve had are as follows:
1/2 extention bar snapped its end off (the type with the flexi end)
A flat blade screwdriver socket broke
The 1/2" drive ratchet lost its socket retaining button/spring/ballbearing
I also find the 1/2" & 3/4" drive ratchets lock up if you put too much torque on them, solved by banging them on the floor..

Undoubtedly a good price for what it is. The problem is that most people only ever need to use about 10 of the most common sizes. The rest are superfluous.

List of tools covered is available at the Halfords Advanced Lifetime Guarantee page.
Confirms that ratchets are included and that a receipt is not required.
Picked up mine today, bloke said ratchets are covered and a lot of mechanics buy them because of this and the receipt is not needed, as long as you haven't used a sledgehammer on them, he asked if I had any broken ones and he would replace them there and then.
He also commented that this was a good price as they had them on the shelf for half price at £75 so £50 is a decent deal, cheers op.
