To be able to reclaim, you need to log in to PayPal and activate the 'Return Shipping on Us' offer (it's free and activation's immediate). After that, you can claim for items you buy via PayPal and return by 31 Dec 2016. PayPal says you can reclaim for overseas returns as well.

Be careful with this, check the terms and conditions, if the return is in regards to a damaged item being received they will not cover it, had a returns fee claim denied because of it,
Check the terms and condition, this was despite paypal reps telling me to apply, knowing my return was because of a damaged item.
Luckily paypal reimbursed me out of there own pocket
Use it loads this year, up to £15 per refund as well remember . Just used your receipt and fill in few simple details and about week later you get your refund.

I had my claim denied because although I uploaded a screenshot of the cost / date of the return they won't accept it and insisted on a proper "receipt" - but My Hermes don't give you a receipt

How did you get PayPal to pay you as I was turned down due to the parcel being damaged and the merchant won't pay as he said he's trying to claim back of the courier, he also said there was not much damage, there was leaking oils and broken items in the parcel, as far as I'm aware damage is damage no matter how much it is.
That's no help to my case, I gave PayPal all the receipts etc, also sent pictures to the seller to show to the courier but PayPal have turned me down and seller won't pay. I contacted PayPal last night again to ask them what I need to do but ain't heard back from them yet.

I basically explained/argued with the rep I spoke to that the previous rep had given me misinformation, that telus do not cover damaged items, as this is stated in the terms and conditions, the rep paid me the postage cost out of a fund paypal have for such issues and goodwill etc.

Thanks. Just to clarify.. you received a parcel which was damaged and claimed for this under Return Shipping On Us? If so they were were wrong to reject your claim.
The quoted part of the terms is saying that if an item is damaged in the post when returned (ie. there was no damage when you posted it or it receives further damage), you cannot reclaim any costs incurred.

Private sellers don't have to accept returns unless item is faulty, in which case the seller has to pay for return postage.
Therefore, if you're smart enough, sellers can sometimes benefit from this

The thing is if you don't accept a return they sometimes just damage it, in which case you are accepting the return and get a broken item back. So it might well just be easier to accept the return if they change their mind and you get the item back in saleable condition and they cover their own postage, also you don't need to refund the original postage unless it was listed as free postage (might need to state in listing beforehand).
I find a good portion of people who want to return end up not doing so in the end.

Indeed, but if the item is damaged either way, i would claim courier damage rather than accuse the buyer. Then if i did believe the buyer deliberately damaged the item, i would file an eBay report. If they get enough reports they are banned from eBay

Measure and weigh it and then use Royal Mail Get a price tool and parcel comparison website. Probably £20+ via RM/Parcel Force due to weight, dimensions and value. Will be cheaper with other courier but loss/damage cover will add a chunk to the price.

I had problems claiming on two occasions. I used eBays own returns methods (collect+). A separate company acting on behalf of Amazon dealt with it and made it as difficult as possible to claim the money. I print screened the PayPal and eBay return details, plus the collect+ receipts and they kept rejecting them even though it was the documents that I was being asked for. In the end I went over the 7 or 14 day limit you get given to reply and they rejected them with no option to appeal and the only response was a reference to the terms and condition. It's a nice idea but could be done much easier and not through a separate company who I'm assuming are getting paid to deny as many claims as possible.

Just received my refund submitted on December 14th - worth chasing up your claim if it hasn't been paid yet - there is an email address in the claim confirmation email.
I also noticed that PayPal have extended the scheme to the end of 2017 and will cover 12 returns:
