I'm constantly correcting my nine year old, where "castle" is pronounced "kah-suh l", "cos" is not an appropriate shortened derivation of "because" and whilst "c*nt" is acceptable for some things in life including Euro Car Parts, it's not acceptable for "couldn't". It's a shame Mr Lucas "want" here to agree with me.

Merry Christmas Euro Car Parts and many thanks for letting me post a review on your shoddy service.

They don't. I got 30% chrarge from one. What's the point even manufacturing it?
I'm new to power banks, and have now bought an Intempo 8000mah unit for £10, and its a world away from these.
£2.97. Cheap lesson learned.

Do post pictures, any pyrotechnic mayhem is always good. By the way with all these types of charges you lose about 33% compared to the maximum power rating as a matter of course so in the real world 's charges will give you about 1200 mha

One of mine burnt out yesterday when I plugged it into my phone. A bit of smoke came out and a nasty smell. I think the chip inside had blown - this one was dodgy before when first used. Local store managed to find a replacement and exchanged it straight away. Can post a picture when i get time if anyone's interested. Probably just a one-off hopefully.

one of these got my z2 from 36% to 86%, so over 50% charge (if you include what it lost while charging). It took approx 2 hours to do this.

my z2 has a 3200mAh battery.

23 Dec 16 #703
I charged it and left it for 8 hours. During which time phone went down to 48%. I plugged this charger in last night, after being left as i said for 8 hours. Turned the phone off and went to bed. This am phone had gone to 80% and charger is done. It managed a 30% charge of my Z2.

I think these are a bit crap to be fair.
So solid red is fully charged? If so there's not enough to fully charge an Xperia Z2 once.
Bit of a let down. Just need to see how long the charge will hold within the unit itself.
Also, its early days, but im a bit concerned that this has caused my previously very good internal battery to discharge much faster than before i used this, which was only yesterday. Hmmm.....

I didn't mean to cause any alarms. Although the battery is among the more volatile chemistries, that doesn't mean they are time bombs. Lithium Cobalt Oxide batteries have been around for a LONG time so safety precautions and mechanisms are standard and robust. The form factor of the cell in this powerbank is standardised and has been around for ages. They have been used in laptops since forever. Just don't crush it. If you look in the picture I uploaded earlier, there is some insulating tape around the battery and PCB. That tape is crucial and is theoretically why the Note 7 failed - ...the positive and negative terminals poked right through the separator and managed to touch... The tape is the separator that separates the negative and positive terminals. If the powerbank gets crushed, that tape can easily shift or get punctured... if that's the case, stop using it.

Anyhow, the threads on the aluminum housing are quite shallow and the business end is made of plastic so I doubt any significant pressure could build up inside to cause a damaging rupture. Worst case, just some fire damage to it's surroundings.

Meanwhile, I've charged my 5s (1570mah) up from 20% and there was still some juice left. Have yet to test it's full capacity. It's a happy £1 spent.

21 Dec 16 #671
Mine arrived DHL yesterday but does not function as described in the instructions.

It flashes red when first connected to charger, and then after a couple of minutes goes continuous red. The red seems not to ever go out so maybe does not fully charge ? Also it does not warm up (surely most batteries do when charging ?).

When connected to a phone it shows red rather than blue, although the phone does show as connected to a charger. Anyone else got the same ?

Translation:
Lithium-Ion batteries are quite volatile.
Over the years many variants of lithium-ion based batteries have been developed. Some are much safer and won't explode, some have very high capacity, some can give all of their power very fast without any damage and some can charge very fast without damage.
Most Dangerous - This battery is one of the older chemistries and can easily combust if not taken care of. That is why everyone is saying not to charge it unattended. Feed carefully.
Lower maximum discharge rating - This battery cannot output it's power too quickly without damaging itself and overheating (adequate for this application so don't worry)

Err, there were loads on eBay yesterday - which aren't there this morning.

I reasonably assumed these had all been sold, but thinking about it, these may have been "chancers" pre-listing items they had ordered which were subsequently cancelled by ECP.

In fact, this makes a lot more sense - as I doubt the market for ECP-branded merchandise is that popular
Jimbo123
21 Dec 16 #666
It's interesting that not a single one has been sold on eBay yet and that you can get the exact same thing unbranded for £2.99, the only way to really make money on these is on a market stall or car boot sale.

To the people that have received Paypal refunds for orders that were cancelled - were the funds actually taken by Euro Car Parts and then refunded back to your account after the cancellation email was received?
I ask as my order was cancelled but it appears the transaction was not voided/ cancelled by ECP as far as Paypal are concerned. In my Paypal account, it shows as 'Your funding source will be charged when Euro Car Parts Ltd completes your order'.

Got mine. looks like an unrated generic 18650 Lithium Cobalt oxide cell (by the ICR prefix - most dangerous and lower maximum discharge rating) with protection built into the charge discharge PCB. Ok for a £1. Didn't really expect more honestly.

Just a note to keep an eye on these to start with - I somehow got the red LED to stay on with the first one I tried (uncharged), and the small circuit board inside got really hot (metal parts too hot to touch). I was about to cut the connections to the battery, but eventually the light went off and it cooled down luckily. It's been OK since though, charging up and charging a phone without a problem. Perhaps just a one-off, but maybe good to not leave charging when you go out.

I haven't seen the blue LED mentioned in the instructions - it flashes red when charging, and is constant when fully charged or charging something, and goes out when run out of charge.

Collected 2 yesterday, they aren't worth more than 99p, you didn't miss anything.
Jimbo123
18 Dec 16 #541
finally, the design of these is quite dangerous to your phone.it's got hard metal edges and if you've got it rattling around in your bag or pocket charging your phone, you are asking for a cracked screen.
Jimbo123
18 Dec 16 #540
also it's bit of a risk buying in bulk, there was a similar deal for a kit sound charger that was selling for 5 pounds and people were buying bucketloads because they were selling for £17 on eBay now you can buy them easily for 5 pounds on eBay, so anyone who buys loads is taking a risk
Jimbo123
18 Dec 16 #539
I don't think anyone should be to sad about not getting these, they are hardly a Premier gift with a large ugly Euro car logo printed on them. You can get the same thing on eBay with the torch included for a few quid and you only need one really.

My theory is that if it wasn't for the "entrepreneurs" on the car boot circuit then you would never get deals like this. Companies do cheap deals because they want to clear inventory and space. Can you imagine if they limited things to 3 per customer they don't want to spend an entire year selling these for 99p each the same principle applies to other deals that sell out fast, if it wasn't for the car boot people there wouldn't be the deals in the first place, just my opinion

Nice one, especially for the metal version. Poundworld also sell powerbanks, but they are plastic and only 1800mAh.

PS: It seems very weak, and it struggles to put out 1000mA at 5V, so charging could be quite slow with these. Even the ones from Poundworld have more power.

All depends on the quality, these may have been sold for more, there is a few comments saying they got them as promo stock, maybe this is just to clear the shelves of items that have been around since summer. I've some of these that are Pebble Branded and they have been fine. I've also a few recieved as freebies at shows and they are fine, they came from reputable promotional suppliers.

Actually the key is the quality control. Any decent brand will have done some QC, and they will stand by the products, however the parts that are discarded often find themselves back in circulation.

The best thing you can do it buy from a reputable store, even Amazon do sometimes have fakes especially from marketplace sellers. Anker sell a version of this called the Anker PowerCore+, no doubt there are copies of it out there with the Anker (or any other brand ) printed on it that may have been rejected by Ankers QC but never found it to the rubbish bin.

I'm NOT trying to say Anker are a bad brand, far from they are pretty good, only that If there's money to be made faking a brand, or selling rejects as working then someone will try and do it.

Important to note with these things. You do not get 2000 mah on your phone you get around 1400 mah, approx 30% of the power is lost for transferring the power from unit to phone.

So dont expect a full phone charge from it.

Happy XMAS....

16 Dec 16 1 #376
Not sure about these. EE had to recall their power bars over a fire risk. A power bar for £1 makes me think about the safety and quality of the unit.

Voted Cold!!

Better off getting an Anker or another reliable brand for about £10 from Amazon.

Added heat - excellent deal for those that need this. Handy to have one lying around so ordered one.

Saying that I hate carrying around bits and pieces like this if i can avoid it. For me it's essential my phone has a big high capacity battery, which is why the iphone 6s plus works great for me. Coupled with the low power mode when i know i might have a battery guzzling day, this works better for me.

It is a idea i have thought about in the past. Or another is the hook line and sinker tactic. They draw you in with one deal, but either make you buy another purchase, to qualif for free delivery minimum order etc. Then suddenly that product goes out of stock, and your left with some other crap, you didnt really want.

16 Dec 16 1 #337
Can't be bothered reading all the pages of comments but anyone else thought this is a master class in drumming up advertising for the company? Yes they make a little profit on these chargers but where will we all think of next time we need a car part? You've guessed it! And we're more likely to buy our car parts as we already have affinity with them. Genius.
freakstyler
16 Dec 16 #336
Got a couple of these ordered, it'll be nice if they show up but I doubt it seeing as they still have stock after 9 hours of hukd bulk buying abuse. That said, I could be wrong and they may indeed have thousands in stock and can still make a profit selling and shipping them for 99p a piece.

16 Dec 16 #322
Because you don't need them and soon enough the clutter will turn into a hoarder style home, years later when your house if full of trash "because f-it" the battery's will leak and cause a fire ending your life in a London fire kinda way?

jewelie
16 Dec 16 #319
Decent versions of the lithium batteries that are in these sorts of things aren't cheap, ones that both store as much charge as they say they do and also have safety circuitry in them. I've mixed feelings on the subject of cheap powerbanks! Poundland had 1800mAh ones recently, didn't they, and you'd expect Poundland to be sensible enough not to sell ones that'd burn the house down at least - so I guess if they can sell them for a quid then others can?

I got 3 but they won't be stocking fillers. Takes the romance out of the Father Christmas legend to think of him brokering a deal with "Euro Car Parts" to distribute their marketing devices. I bet some of your kids are thrilled with their "Sports Direct" mugs and 4-gang extension sockets too.

Does anyone know if these have an 18650 battery in them - hard to tell from the size
If so they are worth buying for cracking open and use the batts for other things (vaping, torches etc)
Also you have free leads to use with your 5 port usb mains charger
You can bin the tubes - can't think of a use for them.
These chargers would struggle with an iphone or S7, I imagine
northwales to tredegar71

at that price, will be 18650. Dont forget the usb charging circuitry, they can cost £1 on eBay. battery wont be any good for gaping, need high drain battery for that.

2000 mAh is not really much, not even a single full charge cycle for my phone, but will come in convenient if you need emergency juice for your phone.

Had a flat car battery recently as well as a phone that had ran out of charge and was stranded for a while. No more.

Good as gifts for kids, too. Younger brother has been my charger more often than I have and the cable will probably break off any minute.

Most people charge their phones once a day and Lithium batteries are rated for 500 charge cycles, beyond that it's pot luck and when they randomly power down it's usually slightly higher power requirement than the battery can put out. So it's kind of expected. Not saying it's right or fair that you've paid all that money for a phone to fail but it is quite normal.

OP thanks - great find, always useful to have and being a branded unit, should be safer than the unknowns on eBay.
