How does this compare to the HP Gen 8?

looking at the spec, similar peformance in a larger formfactor

Yes, although now I've had a proper look, the G3220 does have an advantage over the Gen 8's G1610T
That's what I have. Good machine but not as well built as an HP, however four memory and four pci slots make it much more expandable. Another advantage over the HP is there is brackets for 2 x SSD as standard in place of the Optical Drive.
The remote management on the Xeon is really good, you get full KVM support from BIOS via RealVNC. You do not get this facility on the non Xeon model.

I was after a gen 8 till I seen this, too cheap to turn down
It only has 4 sata headers, 4 sata power and no spare molex or anything. So I wouldn't pay extra for 500gb disk unless you actually want it. The included sata power cables are too short to reach the top 2.5" bays
I went for one of these over a Gen 8 just because it was going up in the loft so I didn't care what it looked like. I also found it quieter than my previous Microserver.
However if you do want to change the CPU I think you have far more options on the Gen 8. There is very little information as to what the T20 supports other than the Xeon processors. That's the only complaint I have, otherwise it does a great job running xpenology.

Same here, the G3220 is OK but once plex starts transcoding it can become sluggish.

The piezo buzzers on these constantly make a very quiet noise, put your finger over it and you'll hear the difference. You can just cover it with some tape

Really happy with it and works well with plex. I've had no issues so far!

is this a gaming pc?
CampGareth to sarah25
5 Dec 16#12
No, gaming PCs have graphics cards, and only the ones with good graphics cards are called gaming PCs (the cards alone cost £200 and upwards).
This could have a graphics card added though, so long as the card doesn't draw more power than a box called the Power Supply Unit can safely supply (it converts 230v mains down to 12v, 5v etc), if it does the PSU will die and could take the rest of the computer with it.

I have one of these with a GTX 750ti GPU, 20GB RAM and a 128GB SSD (for OS and Office). With the exception of one of the latest Forzas I've been able to play anything I've tried on it.

Oh this is about good graphics cards cost over £200, right, yeah there's a scale here depending on what you deem acceptable. My target is high or highest at 2560x1440, 30fps or higher. Missus goes for the same but at 1920x1080. Then there are games consoles with their... eh, 1920x1080 at low to medium, dropping the resolution if needed. Tbh I just wanted to avoid telling a person that any graphics card will do when the end result will be a GT 710 or something picked up for a tenner, while it is a graphics card, like hell does it turn a PC into a gaming PC.

Since I keep seeing VirtualMachines mentioned on the server threads, thought I'd ask here:
Why so many of you guys run VMs?
What tasks/apps are you running that makes this advantageous as opposed to running them all on a single OS?
What are the benefits for you guys?
Honest question!
tek-monkey to farmi
6 Dec 161#24
Keeping things separate means better stability, what happens on one OS can't really affect the other. I have one VM running my plex server, which has most of the resources. I then have an entirely separate downloads box, which runs through a VPN for extra security. Lastly I have a rarely used dev box running windows and IIS, which I use for the odd bit of stuff I do at home. Then I have a HP microserver (N54L) that is my file server.
CampGareth to farmi

I agree with tek-monkey, it's the separation of one task from another that's useful to me. On my personal machines I use VMs to do work, they run ubuntu separate from the windows 10 host OS. On the esxi server in the cupboard I run pfsense (turn your computer into a router, useful for its flexibility with VPNs and whatnot), ubuntu server (which is a go-between for ceph and samba, allows my windows machines to use my network storage), and ubuntu server again (this time for fun stuff, torrents, video conversions, whatever). I would not be comfortable with the box controlling my internet connection also running all my fun tasks since a problem with fun tasks could take my internet connection down or leave my home network extremely vulnerable to attack from outside.

Hi, i have a Xenon version of the T20, i am thinking to put a graphics card into it, not sure the one you suggested would need to change the psu? do you have an amazon link? thanks

6 Dec 16#27
Hi guys wonder if someone could offer some advice. I was about to buy an i3 6100, new mobo, psu and 8gb to replace my old home sever. It was costing about £330. I currently run Emby server for 3 devices and hardly transcode anything. 15 file shares all on my LAN.
Would something like this offer be ideal or could you recommend a better micro server than this to compete with the one I was thinking of building? Also what are the disadvantages to this type of system?
For info, the Xeon version supports 4k at 60 Hz. I've got 2 4K monitors connected to the Displayports, and a third lower resolution monitor on the VGA, works great.

Oh? How does the remote management work? Does it lease a second IP on a different mac or something? I picked up the xeon variant
No nothing complex like that, just enable it in bios iirc Ctrl-p at startup. login with admin as password then change it to a strong password, enable all the features and bobs your uncle.

Look at docker as well instead of having dedicated vm's for single tasks. Achieves the same goals a lot for the time with fewer overheads. So many apps are 'dockerized' sitting ready to pulled..

6 Dec 16#36
OK, thanks, but I'm after something low-powered as well as cheap 8-)
I bought mine directly from Amazon for about £120 so best to shop around. I think you can get away with any GPU that is 300 watt or less. I think there is one of the new cards (a 1050 or something) that only draws power from the motherboard and is also 300 watt. You might be better seeking that out.

No need to change the PSU for the card I mentioned BTW.

I grabbed one of these last year. Got the G3220 model with 500GB disk for about £90 after cashback. Stuck a 750ti card in and it has been great as a HD media server and light Stream game use. I am finding I have to schedule index tasks for Plex etc to run out of main use hours just so it stays responsive in WMC especially if recording 2 programmes at same time as watching a movie. Is it worthwhile to hunt down a Xeon cpu and as they are end of life has anyone seen any cheap ?

i5-4690 and i7-4790 are compatible with the board if you don't require Xeon for ECC.

Thanks for replying.
Which CPU do you have in yours ?
I think there is fine point at which it might be cheaper to buy a Xeon T20 when on offer and get rid of my current Pentium T20. I was hoping to grab a cheap £50 processor upgrade though instead.

I went for the i7-4790k (only got the k because it was on offer on Amazon Warehouse deals - You cant overclock on this board).
Stick in a SSD and 16GB RAM and you can get a pretty good spec machine for less than £300.

More like ~ £400 actually....that CPU cost me £200 and was a bargain at that price.
