Just got a quote off a compare site (comparethemarket.com) .. was £275 and then checked the cashback sites..
Quidco offering £66 and you also get a £50 G/C so if your insurance is due.. worth checking out!
The policy was the best price too.. so a bonus!

Well done, I got a quote and mine was over £200 more.
Aviva and their aliases seem to work best for myself.

you may find the quote is different going through a cashback site or they don't honour the cashback if you get the policy at that price. whichever way you do it, they will get the money they want from you..... :-/

Shame they were treble the price of my best quote. I've also never filled in so many questions for a quote, so on that basis I suspect they will be very greasy in the event of a claim...

Glad you got a good quote, mine's not needed for two months.
I thought I would do a quote anyway but stopped before the end.
We will use a credit referencing agency to do a credit check to ascertain the most appropriate payment options for you. The credit check will also appear on your credit report, under Eldon Insurance, whether or not your applications proceed.
I'm not sure why they need to do a credit check when I specified I would pay in full. I've got nothing to hide but it's more out of principle. There is mention in their T&C's that it helps to prevent fraud etc..... I'm only after a quote though.

You are offered pay for all or monthly. the credit check is only if you ask for that option i think?

I selected in full so not sure why it would do that. I wouldn't mind so much if it popped up if you actually wanted to buy but there shouldn't be a credit check just for quote.
Still a good deal with the G/C and Quidco should the quote come through at the right price. Heat added anyway.

The credit check kind of confirms you are who you say you are. As when say for example your looking to buy a car and looking at insurance you might have not put in everything about you correctly. Thinking you don't want to be contacted for one, and begin to get hounded by any nuisance insurance company calls. The quotes you'll get are more, but when you actually submit your correct details i am 99% sure it is solely down to this credit check as it confirms the person at their residing address, you will see your insurance drops down in price from silly high quotes to lower silly high quotes (genuine quotes).

it asks for the reg which you specify, then it asks number of seats, if its an import and other strange questions....... then the quote was over 3 times more than the average quotes ive had

I understand what you are saying but my driving license should confirm my address that as well, which is also an option I entered. Insurance companies also share data so my details would be on file somewhere and it will show I haven't moved for a decade.
I'm happy for checks against fraud if I'm buying as less fraud keeps the prices down but in my personal opinion not required for a quotation. I don't remember giving consent to previous quotes but perhaps it's a new thing that insurance companies are starting to do, in which case I won't have an option.

In the spirit of shopping around, could give Coop a go for a policy. Shopped hard over the last few years after loosing no claims and thought I was getting best price then gave Coop a go and they knocked £90 off my last insurer meaning I'm only paying £370 (group 22) a year for full comp without no full claims and got £50 Coop vouchers. I've also only purchased once from price comparison sites over the last 7/8 years finding going direct has often been the cheaper option or using cashback. I usually phone and advise the best price I have so far and they either play or say we cant offer that, our spreadsheet says NO!

Most of them do this now. It's "read only" on your credit report. Doesn't actually have any effect either positive or negative. There is a section for "hard checks" and a section for "soft checks" the soft ones are purely identity checks mainly used by insurance companies.
