I think you may be confusing shortbread with butter, I'm no expert but I'm certain the best shortbread is not all butter, I think it has at least some sort of flour and sugar in it!

Not all butter !! The best shortbreads are all butter.....we avoid those with added Palm Oil, Rapeseed oil etc as these have......they are cheaper ingredients.....Deans do make an all butter version which is very nice.....just not this one
Not found them in my local instead purchased aldi speciality all butter shortbread that might be made by Dean's who knows.

As each winter begins, I put some Paterson's (or equivalent) in my car's glove box as emergency rations. Never once been over-keen to declare an emergency. :smirk:

Lol. If, like me, you grew up in a generation where everybody had a family recipe for shortbread that was the best you will ever taste, then you really need to track down some Chrystals as it is that shortbread.

The famous grouse experience sell it on Amazon. Also It is sometimes sold under a different brand name. The owner of Chrystals advised me on FB that the stuff on sale at Hopetoun Farm Shop near Edinburgh is Chrystals shortbread.

No this is NOT the best shortbread you can buy - no no no! Chrystals shortbread takes that title. This is a married couple who make it all themselves and melts in your mouth. Once youve had that you wont touch that other stuff.

Absolutely agree. Although Chrystals is hard to come by in shops. It is little cubes of heaven though and by a country mile the best shortbread I have ever tasted (and I am a middle aged Scotsman).

Yes. But Paterson's isn't very nice (he said being diplomatic and resisting the urge to refer to it as something else). Dean's is as near as you'll get to good home made shortbread. Keep the Paterson's for the visitors you don't want. You can throw it at them.

See #26 The main man's name, according to the back of the box, is Bill Dean. You'll find the contact details from their website - #15. I'd happily have Bill Dean's income, but sadly, it's not me.

M&S is all butter !!
It is like Baxters make M&S soups as well as many others but the ingredients used are not the same.....some are more premium & some are much cheaper
Much supermarket own brand flour will be milled in the same place as Hovis, Allinson etc.....but the initial milled grain is not as good as that used in the premium brands

Walker's also do an excellent shortbread but I might have to try this one.

Walker's is closer to, but better than Paterson's. But Dean's is out there on it's own (apart from the undercover Dean's found in certain other packaging)
And before anybody asks, I don't and never have had any connection with Dean's Shortbread, other than eating it and visiting the factory on a couple of occasions.

Not necessarily. Looking at the boxes I have, they don't say "All Butter" (and they're not). If you check Dean's website , they make all butter and not all butter. I'll eat either. They're both excellent.

I like the M&S triangles. No idea who makes them but there is something special about them. Amazing to think that this might be the only place in the Universe with triangle shortbread... and tea.
