Amazon Echo going for £5.00 cheaper than the RRP with a John Lewis 2 year guarantee . It's a virtual assistant that can knit together all the smart-tech in your house. You should get the Dot if you don't want the speaker in the Echo.
Say goodbye to any privacy you thought you had in your home as MI5/NSA listen to every conversation.

Paranoid much? why would anyone care what i was saying in my own home? every conversation?? hey if someone has nothing better to do than listen to my ramblings at home then good luck to them!
of course, if i was a terrorist or planning other crimes then yeah i would probably not have one of these.
Besides, any smart phone is capable of the same thing

Are you able to link me how to set it up with Kodi?
They will be late to the party by about four years, it won't be intuitive or user friendly, they'll then claim it's aimed at Enterprise, not home users, then after two years they'll throw in the towel.

You're welcome. You might want to think about a free trial of Audible books on Amazon - you get a month for free but you also get 1 free download which you keep if you cancel. If you have Amazon Prime membership you get 3 month trial for free and 3 books to keep. I just tried asking Alexa to read one of the books I had from a free trial and it worked!

Love it. More time spent setting it up than you'll ever save.
Sounds like me.
I've got Hue lights to set up, but I just can't be bothered. It is less hassle just getting up.

Hi,
A reviewer on Amazon.co.uk bought this for his blind father and gave it 5 stars. He seems rather pleased with it - just scroll to the bottom:
I have the dot. I think its great for music, you can ask it to play a specific song, artist, album or genre (eg pop music from a particular decade etc). If you don't like a song you can ask it to skip to the next.
It will happily tell you the weather or news headlines, you can ask it to tell you a joke, ask the time, set a timer or set a wake up alarm. Once you have plugged it in and installed the app - everything is controlled by voice.
I think it is also capable of reading aloud Kindle books and Audible books if you subscribe to that but its not something I have really investigated.
I think your son would love it - you could always try it and return it.....

Lets just say its not as cheap as another sale offer they did 2 weeks back  To put the price back up to £49.99 and then almost immediately put it up as a sale with a fiver off isn't a mega deal. A fiver is a fiver though if you need one for xmas.

He was basing his argument on Black Friday/Cyber Monday prices. Do I need to say anymore?

pure conjecture, for all we know they could reduce them in the sales after Christmas.

If google can bring out one at the same pricepoint as the dot it could be real competition, but the first release of home is a bit pricey. Once all the vendors can agree on a standard it will make things a lot better. too many systems with too many hubs at the moment.

You'll be waiting for the next Black Friday/Cyber Monday deal, by which time you may be looking to buy Google Home or Echo's successor. This is the best deal on the market at the moment, but I do hope that you're proved right and the price decreases further.

The UK one is a bit handicapped compared to the U.S version at the moment, but hopefully next year things will improve so if you read about some amazing feature check its also available in the UK.

I have mine working with KODI - wasn't an out of the box solution though, was a bit of a hassle (involved copying some guys code off of github etc). Have it working alongside a broadlink rm2 (20 quid ish) - 5 remote plug sockets (17 bux) - can tell echo its movie time and it will do my lamps, switch on my TV and start up kodi. Then I can tell it what movie I want to watch or episode or song that I have on my qnap and 8 times out of 10 it will play it. The amount of time I sank into setting it up is probably way above what I would recoup just getting up and switching on the telly though but it does look cool when its working and it doesn't need to be expensive.

That was for the Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals, therefore atypical and not comparable.

I've got one and have to agree. Utter garbage.
I want to be able to play music from my own Plex or DLNA server, but can't find a way to do it.
I want to know when my dentist appointment is. The best it can do is read out the next 5 items in my calendar.
I want to know what the weather is in Kielce Poland. It asks where in Poland. Say Kielce and it thinks you've said cancel.
It's not straightforward to create your own tasks. It requires AWS which would eventually cost money for absolutely no benefit to me if others use it.
To control my other devices, I need to buy a harmony bridge.
It seems to be an expensive way to find out what the weather is like outside or to be played a random song from Amazon Music when it doesn't understand me.

Do not worry about the American accent of Alexa - the UK version has a much nicer accent.
Alexa has been programmed to provide clever/funny answers to lots of not so serious questions and some of these "easter eggs" are listed here

I think it is also capable of reading aloud Kindle books and Audible books if you subscribe to that but its not something I have really investigated.
