I like the fact Amazon's price matched their own stuff

Oh I dunno I found a few uses for the echo
- hands free music whilst cooking
- recipes
- reminders, timers
- daily briefing (quite like that)
- controlling my house heating
- controlling lights
- controlling TV, amp, media center
- shopping...
Of course it's subjective but yes I actually own one - and I've got two dots too. As part of an integrated smart home I think they're wonderful - although I'd say if you don't want the speaker the dot is a much better buy. Note also (versus your phone) the microphone array is far more sensitive and works well even in a noisy room. The echo is just part of the IOT to me - but it is quite wonderful popping off to bed with "Alexa, turn off the living room", glass of water and phone in either hand, and the lights, amp, tv, MC all dutifully shut down.
I like Cortana and OK, Google but this is very different to me. YMMV.

Just use your phone. There's not much these do that a phone can't.

The dot has been reduced to £44.99 as well and not as good as the £39.99 on BF obvs.
Does anyone had any info on whether Amazon are going to make these do multi-room audio/sync? I'm still holding out for google to release their home speaker over here which does and also integrates with chromecast audio.

Just think Siri in a speaker. It's a good speaker too, not a great speaker, but it is a good speaker. I'd probably give a single Sonos play 1 the edge, but not by too much. It has very clear audio, a very good level of volume, and a reasonable bass and it just works. Is it a gimmick, hell yes, but it's also a lot of fun and a definite talking point. I bought one at launch for £99 and since then have bought a few more, one more for me (plus a Dot) and a couple of others as presents because family liked it so much. I now have a few bits of Sonos kit so am waiting on the full integration with Sonos that is supposed to be coming soon.
If you already have a premium speaker with bluetooth or line in, just go with a Dot, but if you don't then you will probably appreciate the Echo if you want a bit of music in your life.

Agreed.
There's few of these pointless items around at the moment too, with Nuimo being the worst. It controls your Sonos volume and can skip tracks but you need your phone to change albums and everything else. It also need to be paired via bluetooth to your phone. And they charge you at least £130 for the pleasure!
Idiots gadgets IMHO.

Do you want to tell that to the other person who thinks the same? You know, all things being equal and all that...
