Why do some idiots not realise when things are sold at a cheap price like this, that the store will not be making a profit, may even be making a loss. It's not that producers are not being paid much, or in the case of the cheap school uniforms that children in sweat shops abroad must be making for next to nothing.
These goods are sold cheaply to encourage people to go to the store and then they are likely to buy other goods.

What they're supposed to be so don't worry. Aldi and Lidl were one of the first signers of the NUF's fruit and veg pledge which basically promotes sustainability and decent prices for farmers. Being German companies, it wouldn't have surprised me if the were some of the last of the big supermarkets.

This and most cheap prices are loss leaders to increase footfall. It's practically impossible for a company to transport 2kg of potatoes all over the country and still make a profit on 19p a bag.

which farmers most get subsidies for leaving some land empty the subsidies are not to sniffed at either. Doubt a week or two of discounted stuff is hardly going to make a difference especially as this year the price of potatoes has been unusally high most years 25kg of potatoes has drop to around 3 quid not this year its been around 5 quid though. plus I don't think the farmer's will be paid any less than the usual market rate it's probably sold at cost price to get more people to shop there.
hooray henry
13 Dec 16 4 #49
I wouldn't feel too bad for the poor old farmers.
For example one farmer local to me gets 250k a year even though he sold up retired early and lives abroad now.
Another just got 1.1 million payment fir just one of her farms. Figures are out there and were also in our local paper for all to see.
So when your "poor" farmer drives past you in his 40grand pickup don't be a muppet and feel sorry for his hardships.
ayounggun
13 Dec 16 #50
Hi Ku66 I'm a farmer (top fruit) and actually the "cost" of most promotions are borne by the supplier. The farmers group together sometimes to try and share the cost as if it hits one person it can wipe them out.

what about subsides do u get any of them and why don't farmers sell stuff themselves. I wouldn't mind buying my milk and fruit and vegetables from a farm. most of the stuff comes from abroad does it not. apart from potatoes and few other crops. One of my relatives has fruit and vegetables business he's just sold half of it as the cost of importing is getting too much due to brexit shannings.
MynameisM
13 Dec 16 #53
that happened to me aswell but they were from asda I think that maybe due to time of year I never get when that season is as we usually buy onions 8/9 kg bags in bulk and sometimes potatoes 25kg bags and every year I get caught out in that season it's something to do with the changes in weather I think.

From experience I can say Aldi produce is often of better quality than other supermarkets the savings come from less staff working faster and less spent on displays lighting etc...food should actually be fresher as it is their policy to remove dated stock before last date whereas I often see discoloured meat being sold in my local Asda late on the last day it can be used.

Lol! So many people keep saying this, but I don't find them any worse than any other supermarket as long as it's all stored properly. We get through so much veg in our house it doesn't last beyond a few days anyway. Besides, the deal STARTS on the 18th, so as long as you buy it a few days after this it won't need to last a whole week to make it 'til xmas day!

IKEA call it the hot dog effect. Sell a product that you make little to no margin on and then the customer believes they are getting an excellent deal elsewhere in the shop. Even if this isn't the case. Very clever and enticing.

Aldi haven't all of a sudden paid less for produce they are just taking advantage of people doing their big Christmas food shop.

14 Dec 16 #73
Exactly. It's called "loss leader".

Yeah, Aldi might lose a few pence on the basic veg. But if it lures people into the store to do their full Christmas shop, they will end up making a lot of money.

it's not strawberries it's potatoes carrots and the like that stuff won't go off in 2 days unless u keep it at a optimum temperature for it to go off unless it already has if that's the case it's ur own fault for picking up a pack of mushed slosh in the first place. u could always return it I suppose.
sul
14 Dec 16 #77
Not many people will go to aldi to only buy these discounted products and aldi know this. It's a loss leader and Other retailers do the same. So why oh why the sob stories about farmers getting paid so little? That is really old news now and farmers get subsidies etc so are more well off than the average person.
The narrow minded mentality of some people on here is just shocking

When they first opened here the quality was way worse than everywhere else. Now hugely improved . I find broccoli never lasts for more than a couple of days regardless of where I buy it. Also re fruit, you really have to look carefully at the bags of citrus as often, 1 or 2 might be squished/mouldy. Excellent prices for these essentials

any farmers want sell me a farm for a a fair price around Staffordshire willing pay around upto 200k. it seems u guys are losing out and not making much seems odd I been saving up to buy a farm for last 10 years and the prices keep going up. o wait u get subsidies and stuff so Joe public pays farmers moan and then won't sell up either so land not been used pushes up prices both on produce and farm land.

Hi I wasn't sure if you were talking to me or not. I have been trying to sell more things locally, like walnuts which don't have a short shelf life.

We received subsidy for the first time this year. At the moment our farm is operating at a loss so it has given us a chance to turn things around. I understand that they people see them as handouts, which you could argue they are, especially when not much is being done with the land.

I would hope some might also see it as a way of maintaining the knowledge and skills about how to grow food for our country. I think this is worth some investment, just like we should be investing in our transport and power infrastructure.

A lot of food comes from abroad which isn't a bad thing in and of itself. The weakening of the pound actually helps UK farmers as foreign produce is more expensive to buy. It's been the other way for a while where the pound has been strong, making foreign produce cheaper.
mcfatty
14 Dec 16 #93
It depends what it is. If it is root veg they keep for a long time past their best before. I currently have their mangoes for 59p and they are actually really nice. I bought like 20, each day i try to select a softer and more ripe one but most of them are like rocks and i suspect they will last into January.
mcfatty
14 Dec 16 #94
I don't think there is necessarily a correlation. Some fruit and veg were traditionally bred to be able to last for months eg. root veg, onions, squash, apples etc.
Tiny25
14 Dec 16 #95
Quite correct, the producers have contracts with wholesalers, retail prices on loss leaders like this have no effect on supplier prices. No matter how many "farmers" on here state otherwise.
For every loss leader like this, there is an increase in footfall. It does not mean the supplier is being paid less, it simply means that someone somewhere has the economic sense to realise that by taking a loss here you can increase profit there.
I tell you what though, I'll claim to be a farmer to give my post some validity. Oooh aarghh.
czwaddy
14 Dec 16 #96
Bork, I would never buy my fresh food this early and would rather pay full price to have the freshest veg. And yes I am on a low budget and purchase as many items I can that wont rot early, leaving only the fresh stuff to purchase.
HookedOnHotDeals
15 Dec 16 #97
You would not be purchasing them THIS early as they are not yet available at the price stated. They are available from the 18th December to the 24th December so if you purchase around Christmas Eve then they are very likely to be okay!

You do need to be careful with what you select though. There are some dodgy produce in Aldi. I have stated this before, the Red onions frequently have what looks like mould on them so you do need to check the bags. ~With the fruit, the staff throw them around and bruise, dropping pallets on them. I hate bruised apples and bananas. So you do need to check them before putting into your basket/trolley.

I am in for the carrots. I love sliced raw carrots and eat piles of them, buying 7 to 8 Kg at a time. They last me around a couple of weeks if I soak them in water when I get them home to rehydrate them. They do tend to get slightly soft towards the end and could do with rehydrating a second time. I do intend spraying with colloidal silver to help preserve them when I finish a colloidal silver generator. Colloidal silver makes everything last for many weeks and destroys bacteria and fungi.

By the sound of it, you do not get out enough.......

Listen to politicians some time and you will hear far stranger things. Think of what I said as a recommendation on how to make things last longer. I do not go shopping every week so have to make things last as long as I can.

Sorry, it was meant as a weird compliment! Rehdydrating carrots, colloidal silver generator...sounds like the future.
Bargainhuntersupreme
15 Dec 16 #102
The reason vegetables don't last is primarily because we don't keep them correctly. Sprouts, parsnips, potatoes, carrots, swedes, turnips, apples, onions etc will all keep for weeks if kept in a cool place (not a fridge), best place is a garden shed. Keep them in a centrally heated house and they'll rot and become a breeding site for tiny fruit flies. I buy reduced price vegetables from Morrisons and they can last up to a week AFTER their sell-by-date. I'm using celery that I bought for 9p last Monday (sell-by-date of 12th Dec), sweetheart cabbage, tomatoes, plums, apricots that I bought Tuesday for between 5p-9p, and I've frozen bluberries and raspberries to use over Christmas, again 9p per punnet. The 19p veg deal at Aldi is really good, so voted hot.

I can't speak for this specific promotion of course but I do know that the cost of many promotions are burdened by the supplier. I thought I'd mention it here because I've found people are often surprised by this.
grhogg
16 Dec 16 #106
I work in the produce industry and see how hard everyone works to produce good quality safe fresh produce and these prices make a mockery of the hard work, skill and dedication that goes into their production. Yes on this promotion the supermarket will take a hit just to get footfall but in the long term it gives the general public the wrong perception when pricing is a milloin miles below the cost of production. All this whilst we are being asked for ever higher standards of quality and traceability. What will happen when the industry becomes unviable and the supermarkets have to rely on produce coming from abroad from sources that do not have our high standards of production and if they do then the end consumer will pick up the cost as prices will be pushed up because of lack of supply.

Judging by your post time, it looks like you went in on Sunday and they should of been available at 19p. I just checked their Super 6 on the Aldi website and it does show them listed at 19p so maybe your local Aldi had not changed the pricing appropriately from the usual prices.
