Is there any decent calibrations up for this monitor yet? colours seem a bit washed out

The IPS version of this monitor that I bought second-hand arrived with a cracked screen. It also had horrible yellow backlight bleed in the corners. I tried the equivalent spec AOC 27" G-Sync IPS from PC World, and that also had backlight/yellowing in the corners. After doing more reading around it seems to me that the 144/165 Hz 27" IPS panels are not ready for consumers; they should be perfect given how much they cost! What is the point in having "deeper blacks" if there are glowing/yellow patches in the corners? I finally went for the TN panel in this listing and gambled on an Amazon Warehouse deal for £400 in "good condition". I also redeemed an Amazon £5 on £100 top-up deal, so it came in at a final cost of £395. The monitor arrived in what I would describe as almost perfect condition, just a minor casing mark where someone had unplugged the display port cable at the rear, which obviously isn't visible unless you hunt for it! I am much happier with the dark-scene performance on this TN screen compared to the IPS variants above. Unlike the above IPS screens, I get an even black colour better than my previous Acer screen, and there are no dead pixels. I am very happy, thanks to the OP! It also arrived 2 days after the order with free delivery; the estimated delivery was on Thursday when I bought it, but it came two days earlier than that. There are still a couple of other screens available that are described as "used - very good" from Warehouse deals for £423 left in case anyone is interested, just check the description that there are no dead pixels noted, but presumably they will be in even better condition than my almost perfect screen. I'll stop short of calling it a bargain at ~£400 quid, but definitely an expensive purchase that has been made more palatable.

Nice price. Just a note if you are using this for competitive games. Gsync adds input lag. If you are hitting consistently high frame rates it's better to turn it off as you won't be seeing tearing anyway. For games where your framerate is choppy it's worth having on.

Can you see a big difference between 2k and 4k? Is it similar to the jump from 1080p to 2k?

Cool cheers, I think i'll save up for 4k G-sync if that's the case as if I go out and get a new 1440p g-sync monitor now it will put me back a few months ... and tbh 4k is the way I want to go. :smiley:

Yeah the MG's a great monitor.

At 4K G-Sync definitely made a difference, I'm on 1080 SLI at the mo, and was on 980ti SLI. Some games would dip to a low of 30-35fps at times (The Division, The Witcher for example) and G-Sync stopped any stutter. Poorly optimised games/heavy games it def helped on.

At 1440p with 1080 SLI, G-Sync still does help every now and again (especially when some games *Battlefield 1 cough, cough* drop SLI support on updates), but less so. If you went 1440p ultra-wide then I'd go for G-Sync. Also worth mentioning I go G-Sync and V-Sync enabled in Nvidia Control Panel and disable V-Sync in game, and cap fps at around 155fps. Stops top end stutter as well.

Sorry for the waffle - basically I'd plump for 1080 SLI G-Sync for 4K, single 1080 and your/this monitor for 1440p. It does help at 1440p, but not sure if its worth the G-Sync premium.

Sometimes, mainly play BF1, Civ 6 and rocket league all at 144hz

Do you play fast action games? Racing games?

Does gsync make any difference with your rig? Considered upgrading but worried it would make no difference at all. Have the MG279Q which is a cracking monitor so tempted to plod on with it until I drop in another 1080 and go for 4k.

Yeah, agree a 970 will struggle a bit at 1440p.

Another option is get second 970 and run SLI. They can be had pretty cheap now on Ebay.

My old rig was a 970 SLI and it ran 1440p at max settings on every game with a very high FPS. Upgraded to a 1080 for VR but the difference for regular gaming is minimal. My 3D mark firestrike score went up from 17100 to 18150 which I thought would be more :smiley:

Don't listen to the horror stories about SLI. The only game in the last 2 years that didn't run like butter was Arkham which is an unoptimised mess. The power draw is pretty low on most modern cards so you don't need a ridiculously big PSU, mine is a 650w Corsair HX. I had zero problems and ran 2 cards for 18 months.

Yeah, G-Sync tax is an easy +£100 over free-sync.

You can occasionally pick up the IPS version of this monitor on Amazon Warehouse (brand new but with a damaged box) for sub-£500. Panel lottery though.

I moved down from my XB280HK 4K G-Sync purely for more fps's, to the IPS version of this monitor. Flogging the 4K one on now I think - the pictures great but until they release 100Hz+ 4K I think I'll wait to go back (1080 SLI).

Would a 970 be any good for this? Worried it would struggle to get decent fps doing 2k...

4k is limited to 60 fps as well, I have 120Hz monitor at the moment and 60Hz vs 120 Hz is huge in terms of smoothness.

Not saying Gsync isn't good but you have a choice at the price point of the deal. Either you go TN panel with Gsync or IPS without. You will struggle to get both south of £500.

I run a gtx 1080 so don't notice many FPS drops at 1440p. As soon as I do I'll be sure to upgrade or go SLI.

I want a 4k Gsync monitor next but they are stupidly expensive.

​Freesync is no good for anyone who has just invested in a new Nvidia card, like myself. I do not like the price premium that G Sync adds, but it will stave off a future upgrade as frame rates drop. It would be best if Nvidia embraced FreeSync. but very, very unlikely.

Freesync range is only 35-90hz. Would prefer up to 144Mhz

Check out the Asus mg279q. It's 1440p, IPS and 144hz and is £460 brand new. It is identical to the pg279q but with freesync instead of gsync.

Cracking monitor though, it's what I'm running at the mo and picture quality and gaming experience is superb. Also lots of positive reviews online.

That's a good price. Now I don't know if I should get it or hope for some Christmas offer on the IPS version.

Must be good as it has red accents and the moniker 'predator'.

Slightly less bezel than the Asus with the same panel, so for those with multi-monitor setups, perfect. Have a fiddle with the colour settings (or find a colour profile/icc online) and it's as good as the Dell in the same TN range.

Combine with a 480/1070+ and enjoy a buttery smooth experience :wink:

I just bought the IPS version, used but supposedly perfect for this price, let's hope it is.Otherwise would have jumped on this!

I'd just like to add, I have one of these. It's a fantastic monitor, even better when you have an Nvidia card as it's got G-Sync, so no more vertical sync lowering your frame rate.
