Samsung make HDDs, so it is unlikely they will stick a rivals HDDs in one of their products.

I rate Sammy HDDs highly, if I thought it had Sheetgate drives in it I wouldnt touch it.

The biggest issue with this is the seller, I also wont touch Ebuyer with a bargepole, had some very poor customer service from them over a DOA DVD player a few years ago. HQ is in France, and (not sure if they still do this), they made you write (on PAPER) to the French HQ to get a refund sorted, then stiffed me for the return postage as well.

The 4TB version had Seagate drives.

No, Samsung used to make their own disks. I do miss the SpinPoint series *sniff*. Seagate has owned Samsung's hard disk division since 2011.

Really?? It shows how reliable their drives are, I havent had to replace a Sammy - ever! They get passed down through the childrens PCs when they leave mine, as do Hitachi drives.

Sheetgate though, I only have one working drive left, 4 failed this year, one was still supposedly under warranty, although they never sent the replacement.

I mentioned elsewhere that I recently decomissioned my home server. I had 6 x 1tb spinpoints in there for I think 5-6 years. I sold each drive on eBay with 100% S.M.A.R.T. They sold like hotcakes even highlighting the amount of hours on them. Best drives ever.

I had an external Seagate (in Maxtor enclosure) refuse to mount the other day - did't respond to anything but did strangely come back to life after the only thing it allowed: a full surface scan. I don't have much faith in Seagate.

I don't think encryption is default, it's a software thing [that activates the optional hardware encryption] WD offers with the drives. That sound right?

I have two 2TB My Passport portable drives and one 4TB My Book to backup the two portables. I have two 3TB My Passport drives, one as backup to the other. So the new 6TB is to free up the second and to back both 3TB portables up onto... there's a method in the madness and I'd advise everyone to do something similar if you have large amounts of data that would be a bitch to lose, or pay £400+ for sterile environment disc recovery - which isn't always certain to work!

So if any drive goes pop just buy a replacement immediately and (fingers firmly crossed) your data is safe. I've learned the necessity to do this the hard way!

If people are having their reservations about purchasing from ebuyer, Amazon also have it for around £8 extra

Used to buy loads of stuff from ebuyer until they shafted me. One item was short and they said this was impossible as they check/weight every item before the seal goes out. Needles to say I made such a fuss I got my missing item. Now I buy 1 item at a time, bunch of cowboys but they are cheaper so it's still worth the effort.
