Bought this about a year ago. About 3 months ago i gave up and bought an xbox for the living room instead.
When it works it's awesome - I'm using cat 5e cable, vm 200mb, i5 gtx970 - but some days i would switch it on and i'd be making several trips up and down stairs for about an hour before i could actually play a game.
The main problems came from when things needed updates and you had to go onto the main pc to sort the issues out.
Other niggles were not being able to play origin games. I managed to get gta v and witcher 3 to work - but theyd be a hugh jarce when there were software updates.
I also wanted to love the controller, but when i switched my xbox one s on for the first time, i knew then i'd been lying to myself and the steam controller was a horrible horrible thing.

Not as great as it sounds. It throttles AAA games. Read this part from a review:
PERFORMANCE & VISUAL QUALITY
Now, we've hit a snag. Your games might be absolutely fine with Steam Link - but I've found that it does come down to the type of game you're playing. Why I've included performance and visual quality in the same category comes down to how certain games demand more from Steam Link and how it utterly fails to deliver when pushed to stream games that are AAA titles. There is obviously always a relationship between more taxing graphics and the performance you'll get from hardware. But how does this come into play when simply streaming your game to your TV? Why should that matter?
What you'll find (and it seems to be a common problem) is that Steam Link will try to automatically downgrade the visual quality of these types of games to keep the performance fairly consistent. Your high end PC will be running the game at a steady 60FPS on your PC monitor but on your TV you'll see major dips in performance. That's unless you're willing to sacrifice both the resolution and the amount of data being transmitted through the ethernet cable into the Steam Link.
So when I first played Rise of the Tomb Raider, I experienced a horrendous amount of artefacts (imagine you're playing the game via a 720p YouTube video). Following the advice and guidance of numerous forum posts and the advice of a Valve rep on Steam Link's forum on Steam, I was able to massively improve the visual quality but at a cost of the game's performance. A game my PC is able to run at 60FPS was suddenly barely able to reach 30FPS with dips down to 27FPS every few seconds, creating a stuttering effect when in motion/ playing.
I had tried every combination of Steam/ Steam Link settings and advanced settings to try and improve the experience but in the end, to get the game to perform at a steady 45 FPS I had to disable a number of graphics settings and display the game at 720p. Which I could have done by purchasing the game for my PS4, saving myself all this hassle and frustration of trying to get this device to live up to what my PC is actually able to achieve.
I've read similar anecdotes from users trying to play other hardware-taxing titles such as The Witcher 3 and so on, who must either suffer a terrible visual presentation or achieve what their PC is able to display but sacrifice performance massively until the game is almost unplayable.
IS THERE A FIX/ PLANS TO IMPROVE THIS?
Not that I can find. You can follow the steps I have taken, take hours to try different combinations of auto-adjusting resolutions or not, allow hardware encoding or disallow, limit bandwidth and so on. Or you can buy a HDMI cable and save yourself the hassle.
IS STEAM LINK FOR ME?
If you enjoy titles that either don't demand much from your hardware or don't intend on offering state of the art visuals - you'll probably do just fine with this device and there's certainly a lot to appreciate about the little box. But this will absolutely not rival the experiences offered by consoles. Yes they may not achieve resolutions/ speeds that your PC can do with its hands tied behind its back, but they also do not have strange visual artefacts or consistent FPS drops. You won't have to spend hours trying to fine tune the settings to suit each game you're intending to play.
I will conclude with this: I plan on selling Steam Link.

I have one and I love it but I'd temper the excitement a little bit. It works flawlessly with a wired network connection (I use Powerline adapters) but over wireless it's not been great to me.
I have my Steam Link approx 15 yards from my router and the lag isn't terrible, but it's definitely offputting enough to make me need a wired connection. Shorter distances for the wireless facility might be ok, but don't expect to get flawless results from one side of the house to the other.
Worth buying, definitely. Just plan ahead if your PC is far away from the intended Steam Link spot.

Steam can GET STUFFED. I work in IT and Telecom and quite frankly their sign on system is THE WORST ever invented. They should sack their architects and idiot programmers. They have lost a sale.
I tried to buy the steam link but idiotically you can ONLY buy it with an account, why? Surely I can link to an account after buying. Nope. As my son uses my main steam account, I tried to buy it via my 2nd account, but now get caught in an endless loop of requesting pass code, changing password, entering the password IDIOTIC "I am a human code" which DOESNT WORK as its designed by an idiot because it says I am entering incorrectly when its 100% correct.
Then I look for any means to contact them using my 30 sec rule to locate it, oh you need to sign on.....DURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR what idiot designed that!

Yes teamviewer (and other remote desktop style apps) work great from your phone/tablet to simply click whatever prompt is on your PC without getting up or going to it.
That Amazon link shows that the seller is called "BreKoo", but it is fulfilled by Amazon. However, surely £23 plus whatever shipping could possibly be is still cheaper than that for £60?
Yes, it has 3 USB ports and you can always use a hub with it if you need more.
This works fine. You can use that receiver to connect up to 4 wireless xbox 360 controllers to the single usb port, which is nice. It actually works with 3 controllers fine, and the fourth requires some initial faffing. Google will help if that's what you want to do :sunglasses:

If your computer has 'Wake from Lan', you can boot the computer using the steam link.
Games can be launched through the steam link & you can access the desktop mode to run other software
The steam link also acts as a controller link (various console or USB joypad, keyboard & mouse, etc.)
Its strongly recommended you use Powerline adapters for a wired connections over Wifi, as Wi-Fi can cause stutters.
Its a remote link, the PC is not usable by another person while you use the steam link.
Its when something requires admin permission you can't control it through the steam link.
Not the biggest ball ache and gaming offline has been decent enough for me over homeplugs.
Not being able to play Battlefield is another slight down but I'd rather play it at my desk anyway with a mouse. Steam link is better for single player pad games imo.

Thats pretty much been my experience as well. I once had it working flawlessly and every time since then something has caused an issue with it to the point I've given up on it. If a game needs you to make a selection at the start (Metro 2033 Redux, Civ 5 or Age of Wonders 3 for some examples) then that simply isn't carried over to the Steam Link meaning you have to access the PC to even launch the game. I'd save the 23.99 and not bother personally.
Still, it's a good price and you'd probably sell it for more than you bought it for once you decide its a complete nause to use and give up on it.

tempted to buy from the steam store but have prime so if amazon could price match then id have free delivery
Not the biggest ball ache and gaming offline has been decent enough for me over homeplugs.
Not being able to play Battlefield is another slight down but I'd rather play it at my desk anyway with a mouse. Steam link is better for single player pad games imo.
Still, it's a good price and you'd probably sell it for more than you bought it for once you decide its a complete nause to use and give up on it.
Cigbunt - teamviewer looks a genius shout.
Had some Steam credit purchased from CDKeys with 25% Quidco deal. Nice timing! HOT!

Shipping & Handling ruined it for me so backed out :disappointed:
Nope. Most wired controllers work with it (Xbox, PS) and the Bluetooth controllers (Ps4, WiiU pro) work too
So good I'm almost tempted to buy another one even though I would have no use for it whatsoever!
Good bit of kit.
As mentioned in that deal, you can also get the Link and the Steam Controller in a bundle for a nice 51% off HERE or just the Steam Controller for 30% off HERE
Full PS4 controller support is coming too (it works now but using steam controller configs).
