So glad I never jumped at this. Too many 'average reports' and poor sound reviews.

No doubt it is good for the money...bit remember at full RRP price this set was sub £500 and so maybe we shouldn't have too much expectation. For an average tv set at a good price it's a good deal. But I think anyone wanting a 'good' tv, it's probably unrealistic to expect this to be a 'great' tv.

Torn between the Sony TV & sound bar or another TV on offer at Argos, the LG 49" inch TV in the link below:

http://www.argos.co.uk/product/5386396

It's £50 more than the Sony one but (marginally) bigger and also includes Now TV as well - LG TVs tend to have a great reputation as well and there have been a few negative comments regarding the sound for this Sony TV. Fewer reviews for the LG TV but reviews are great - any thoughts on which TV is the better option?

The HD is excellent, the SD is good as long as you're at least 6ft back. My plasma does SD better but I think this is down to it being 720p. I do think it's the best led for the money.

A good offer it is. Definitwly would see one person happily through another 2yrs until decent 4k 65" come down to around £600. I would definitely buy this if i didnt have 2 similar TVs already. Im definilety recomending this to family and friends.

whats it like upscaling SD and HD freeview pictures? i dont mind the crappy speakers or lack of apps but coming from an 11yr old plasma i would expect a big improvment in terms of picture quality?
amorset
8 Nov 16 #125
I got this yesterday after much deliberation. I think I'm never going to be happy with led, coming from a plasma. I do think the picture is quite good but my issue is the viewing angle. Within a foot or so sideways the picture colour just washes out. I brought brightness way down to negate it but straight on its too dark.
I maybe picky but with the TV in the corner of the room it's viewed at an angle by most watching.

Bought this yesterday with the Quidco making it £315. Excellent TV - really happy with it! All my films are on BluRay which I'm totally fine with. Won't be looking to get 4k anything for another 5 years probably (at which time it will be all about 8k and everything 4k will be cheap).

To confirm.

I got this with the soundbar for £458.99.

Then phoned Argos to advise only £30 was knocked off rather than the £70 advertised on the soundbar page "when bought with any Sony TV".

They are sending me a cheque for the £40 difference.

This brings it to £418.99

Have £36 tracked in Quidco too.

Got this TV yesterday to replace an old Sony bravia 32 LCD. Seems very nice to me. No motion lag at all. Screen is super bright, colourful and sharp. Sounds seems a little tinny out of box. But a change of preset solves this. WiFi enabled. Runs netflix fast, no problems there. Not many HDMI I agree. Brought a switcher box problem solved. Runs amazing with bf1 on Xbox 1. For the money seems a deal to me. I honestly don't think this is a crappy rebrand. It's too good.

Hi. Does this TV really have a 'VGA input socket' please? On the Currys website it says 'SVGA (via HDMI).' Not sure if that means it comes with a VGA to HDMI adaptor or something? I want to use it a a PC monitor and HDMI seems to produce mouse lag even in game/pc mode.
spenspuma
6 Nov 16 #105
You can't get it for £420..I think some.guy has just seen the £70 off and quickly done the math to get £420. Not realising Argos have actually got that bit wrong and it's in only £30 you're saving as they have already taken £40 off the soundbar anyway in the sale.

Would be interesting if you pick this up and explain that the website says £70 off and seeing if they'll honour it. I was going to do this today but once I'd read reviews on that soundbar I decided against it - even at £70 I wouldn't take one as I'd never use it due to the unrectifyable sound delay.

SteTheDon
5 Nov 16 #103
They really needed to make this clearer because anyone can buy the the soundbar for £140 so only really saving £30 when buying with the TV. They should include in the offer details that £140 sale price is part if the £70 saving. One fella said he got for £420 So still need that question answering, maybe it's possible.
spenspuma
5 Nov 16 #102
The £70 saving is including the sale price discount.

Just make sure you read the reviews on the c180 soundbar.it has big issue with sound delay making watching films and tv annoying/impossible.
SteTheDon
5 Nov 16 #101
How do you get it for this price. The bundle says £458.99 and is this price at checkout even though it says save £70 on the soundbar product page which should make it £420.

I have a Sony smart TV at home. And three Panasonics. The Sony is really poor by comparison in so much as it has lag on boot up. It takes a good minute before you can do much with it e.g. access apps,Netflix etc. Even changing the channel or volume isn't reliable until it sorts itself out. I have no such issues with the Pannys. Having said that PQ and SQ are very good on the Sony. But, personally, I wouldn't buy another Sony.

I do have 4k tv, streaming netflix 4k and bt 4k as well. To be fair for me there is not a big difference between 1080p and 4k, specially on movies. Yes 4k is really detailed and great on demos with slow moving camera pans and like static videos. Once you start watching footbal or some action scene there is lnot much in it.
Only real difference for me is in 3d when it streams full 1080p to each eye and this is great. So if you still one of few people still interesting in 3D it is worth getting 4k set just for this.

It's OK if you REALLY want to waste what's left of your life watching Telly (as I do!).....still if it's what you want to do then a big screen is better. For me a 10ft bargepole's just not enough..... I'd go for at least 20'.
Remember, also, that after guarantee expiration, Sony has a £70 minimum charge before they will even start to look at what's wrong with their stuff AND won't sell parts for you to repair it yourself.

Got this plus the Sony HT CT180 Soundbar for £418.99. (TV: £349, Soundbar: £139.99 - £70 = £69.99).

This. At 48" I really don't think it's a wise purchase buying a middle-of-the-road 4K set right now. If you have the money to buy a top-end set with all the bells and whistles then great, if not you're compromising already.

Much better to wait for 4K to dig its heels in a bit more. At the moment you're limited to a few Sky channels, the odd show on Netflix and obviously gaming. For gaming you'll want HDR etc which a lot of the cheap sets don't have.
dansax
3 Nov 16 #47
..and seriously rubbish. Using a switch box means compromises like having to use a separate remote (or manually switching the box itself) to change inputs. It also means you're limited to only two different picture presets which is a major pain. I don't want to be limited to using one of either "gaming settings" or "tv settings." I have a Sky box, PS4, Wii and Raspberry Pi connected and I need different presets for each of them.

In the same boat, mate! Been researching a new tv for ages (and endlessly circling the boards on AVForums) but it's such a minefield at the moment with 4k / hdr being so badly implemented by the manufacturers... I think for the time being I'll get something similar to this until 4k / 8k / HDR or whatever matures and more content is available that takes advantage of these formats . Most of the stuff I watch on tv is in standard definition anyway and it's well documented how badly 4k panels upscale this.

As an aside, a fairly in depth review of this tv (well, the W650D anyway) is here:-

I bought the hitachi 48 4K from Argos last week. It's a vestel

Wasn't expecting much for 349-11% TCB, but it's fantastic. My digging shows that it started life as an LG.

Doesn't have the smart bells and whistles, but the quality is great. It's for a bedroom, but side-by-side with our living room F8000, it was hard to tell the difference, and in 2013 the Samsung cost £1800

Add my vote to that. I have looked at so many reviews the last year and my conclusion is for those like me who still like to watch some standard def material, all 4K tv's no matter the cost do not upscale well from standard as opposed to Full HD TVs. Add to that the build quality e.g. Samsung ks7000 with many owners complaining of the backs comming away and the popularity of edge lit and subsequent light bleed, which all seems a step back and for what- there's still hardly any 4K content around not to mention HRD!

Is the scaling / picture any good?; I would prefer a good full hd tv to a so so 4k tv personally.

True, trying to find a true 10bit panel for under £1500 is a stretch aswell. I am waiting for prices to come down in the next couple of years and who knows maybe by then general broadcasting will be in HD instead of SD.. lol. 4K content is great if you have some but we are not ready. Just makes regular content look worse.

I take your point, but a 48" tv is actually quite a decent amount bigger than a 42" to my eyes at least. Except in the case of an old plasma where, including bezels, they might be about the same size

I had full hd 42 panny plasma until it died on me and that had a good sd / hd picture so this is only slighly bigger.

To get a good 4k tv means paying at least 550 / 600 (with at least acceptable scaling) then of course you really want Ultra HDR 10 bit. So for me I would much rather buy now and then buy in 3 years time when HDR will be a common standard and maybe there will be allot of material around for it then.

4K TVs generally have some built in upscaling. 48" is actually pretty big for 1080p, as in big enough that the difference with a 4K upscaling TV would be noticeable. This is still a good deal though, these have a nice interface (if you like that sort of thing).

Bought this recently, great tv for sport and gaming, X Reality makes things even more distinguishable, lots of options to edit picture settings to suit, 2x HDMI only downside I've found in 5+ months.

Bought from Argos in June just before the Euros for same price

Quidco says 10% for TVs over £299 for home delivery or fast track, so that would bring this down to about £315 if it goes through ... so tempted.

Anyone bought via Quidco and can confirm it tracked at 10%?

would anyone be able to confirm if the tv comes with apps like itv player, channel 4 all 4 player, and 5 on demand?

Got my son the 40" for Christmas as he was giving off that the PS4 graphics on his supermarket special look a lot worse than mine. Maybe would have went to this though it's almost £100 more expensive than the Amazon warehouse deal I got. Image quality looked great for the price on limited testing.

Price sems good; anyone know is this TV has a dual tuner so can record one source whilst watching another?

I've seen adverts for 8K already, which seems strange as you can't get much in 4K right now.
