Here goes - not sure how this will go down, I know it's expensive and has been cheaper way back, but this is the cheapest i can find at the moment.
Ideal with your Play1 and Play3 speakers or for those setting up your home cinema using Sonos Speakers.
* Adds dramatically deeper bass to any Sonos speaker (or amplified component).
* Zero cabinet buzz or rattle.
* Versatile. Place it anywhere. Standing up or lying flat.
One-button setup.
Not sure between the Gen1 or Gen2, as I can't find much info.

Slight cosmetic changes from Gen 1 to 2 with an addition of colour choice otherwise the hardware is the same.

The picture is of a Gen1. The Gen2 has a darker centre trim. Performance etc the same between versions!

Just need this for 5.1 - Do people think its worth the upgrade ? Ill probably wait a bit longer anyways but still its a lot for a sub >?

I have the SUB in my lounge zone configured with Playbar and 2x Play1 on the Flexson desk stands I posted a deal about.
The SUB is immense, for a number of reasons but as the system accounts for its inclusion your other speakers sound much better too as they no longer look to produce those levels from frankly drivers ill equipped for the job - they do a good job, but it's black and white when you hear the SUB fire.
If you have the means, just buy it. I guarantee there will be no regrets.

I have a sub, bar and 2x play:1 and feel that the bar is useless without the sub
Absolutely worth every penny if you care for the added quality

Makes a huge difference when added to the Play speakers.

I have had it about a year and used with the Play 1 & Play 3 and the sub gives a richer bottom end to the music. There is a switch on the app, to switch it on and off so you can clearly hear the difference and it is always switched on. You don't realise how loud you have the music until walk away and come back into the room. I have never had it more than 50% on the level as stuff in the room (not the sub) start to buzz/rattle.

Amazing difference in sound if you add to a soundbar and a couple of rear speakers, I have a couple of setups, one using Play 1's and one with 4 ceiling speakers - sounds superb!

So you're considering a £15 saving for the hassle of EU returns and the loss of 5 years guarantee? Ooooooook.

Ha, Good luck with that. Its not Amazon but a brand spanking new 3rd party seller that doesn't even ship to UK.
