Quite strange. I have been using this kettle for about 4.5 years now, never notice any smell .. ...
Well it might be someone **** the kettle and the following day someone is boiling it ...

You only get the smell if you leave in the one cup red plastic filler level thing; remove it. That's only there to help you measure 1 cup of water exactly, because the measuring cup chart on the side starts from 2 cups.
I had read about that long before i bought it, and removed it before i used it and have never experienced any odd taste.

I've had one of these for 3 weeks and I have exactly the same problem. I'm going to get a refund.

Last one of these I purchased leaked .
Took it back and exchanged, two months later leaked again.
Ended up with a full refund.
They seem to leak in the same area around the clear plastic water level.

I disagree, this taste/smell has long been associated with the use of plastics in the body of the kettle.
I was once treated to an in depth explanation of the chemicals involved but once it got heavily into the "chloro-phenolic thingy whatsits", my attention began to wander!
I don't much care what causes it, I just don't like the damned taste of it!
I use a glass and stainless steel one now and the water tastes as God intended it to.
...Err, I hasten to add, not a crappy Russell Hobbs one as the lids fall off after a few months! :disappointed:

never thought of it before but not much cop if you're left handed as the water level viewer is only on the one (and wrong) side...
