Absolutely zero need - there are a TON of user made mods and huge complete overhauls for this game out there for £0.00 - saving the need to buy the same game again.

It would have benefitted more, but it also would have been more work. It would have required more of a remaster vs essentially a port of Skyim PC version (with a few tweaks). Also Skyrim sold better, so there was a bigger audience.
Oblivion can look pretty rough 10 years on, PC can thankfully mask it with "character overhaul mod v2" etc.

I have the basic version of the game, will I automatically get the GOTY edition through backwards compatibility?

I installed mine last night but didn't check that - the logo on my installed list was the standard one

No, you'd need the second disk of the GOTY edition in to play the DLC unless you own it digitally, same way it is for both Fallout games. Also, GOTY and 5th anniversary edition only have Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles, not all the smaller DLC's.

Thanks guys, so if I buy the goty edition on 360 I'll get all/most of the content once installed. Great, that's my Christmas break sorted and don't have to wait for skyrim to drop under £20 now!

Oh and is there an option when installing to insert the second disc with the dlc? I.e. How do you get it to install?

iirc you need the deluxe edition for all the dlc.

it just recognises my dlc disc as the core game instead of going to the install dlc packs menus on that disc, looks like the discs are there just for liscencing to play the backwards compatible download

Games with more than one disc only the first disc is need as it will download the full game once its in the drive, how large was the download , as it does not run from disc the who!e game is downloaded the disc is just used to verify
