**Looks like you can possibly get this for £43.44 if you follow rivellangel's advice in the comments, thanks rivellangel

Ok so my recent Chinese mobile phone deals haven't generated me a lot of heat so I thought I'd post something different.

So different in fact that in all honesty I have no idea what anyone would use this for. But it must be awesome, because frickin' lasers.

Price seems to be the cheapest available. Would love some suggestions on what one would use this for.

Haha, love it!!!

This is my phone! Good to see it made it's way to HUKD, love this site.

The laser etcher I used cost our company about 10k, but I'd definitely have a crack at using this (on plastic first, then valuable objects...)

This may seem obvious from the way laser cutters range from £50 to £100k but you'll get a better quality machine for more money :P Smoother motion, better focus, more power etc. Then again the saying is that you should buy cheap tools, when the cheap ones break from use you know you need expensive versions.

Hello again  If I was serious about engraving then I'd look at sabarmultimedia series of videos about Chinese laser engraving machines, that guy is a genius. Or I'd look at 70W engravers from vocell. Trotec are decent too. As for cutters well yes you can need a lot more power depending on the material. I was really interested in the kick starter glowforge but that seems to not be working out.

These are designed around DVD drive motors and parts for positioning. Also use solid state lasers that are quite weak.
#1 DVD drive parts = very small working area.
#2 1watt laser = not very powerful, ok for burning wood though and will damage your eye sight permanently.

There are other solidstate laser engravers with much bigger working areas.

Actually no...

Gareth is right.

The saying is "buy cheap the first time to see what you use. If they break then you know you use the tools enough to invest in high quality."

Your saying is also correct but when it comes to tools what Gareth said is common advice.

I'm sure you mean well, but I think what you have said is complete bunkum. Having ordered one of these this morn (at $59.99 delivered surely no home can afford not to have one of these) I have checked my house and contents insurance, and can find no clause that would prevent me from owning or operating the machine. It is a portable domestic appliance, I see no reason why that would invalidate my insurance - no more than using the vacuum cleaner.

You need to get 60-70W laser if you're serious about laser etching. There's also laser marking machines as well which is different. If you don't want to spend a lot of time and headaches then get a Trotec which will set you back many thousands of £. You can get a chinese laser for around £1000 but you'd need to spend a serious amount of time setting it up and using the best guide by Russ from sabarmultimedia. Also the phone shown above you won't get results like that from a 1W laser etcher. I'm looking at Vocell currently which is the cheapest I can find that should work and with import duty etc it'll be closer to £5K.

I bought one of these a few months ago. It worked well on small pieces of wood and also etched onto plastic cards easily (blue coloured)
Unfortunately it didn't last long and the laser would not focus. Banggood offered a partial refund which wasn't brilliant all things considered!
othen
29 Nov 16 #85
It sounds like you are very knowledgeable about laser etching, but I think you have missed the point with this post. This is an introduction to a pretty cool technology for the price of a curry in the Tandoori with a few drinks and a taxi home, there is no point comparing it with a (obviously much more capable) machine costing £5,000.
There are plenty of You Tube videos of this machine printing on soft materials like wood, leather and plastic - so I think the answer you were looking for (for CDR) is: it will probably work perfectly well on leather, but the output will be quite small.
I'm looking forward to the one I have ordered arriving in a few weeks: it will be a really good technology demonstrator for my 12 year old son, a load of fun, maybe a bit useful (we have a while to think of something to use it for) and a pretty cool thing that no one else nearby has.

You absolutely would not want your 12 year old son playing with a 1W laser, (comes in with his friend whilst you are elsewhere, "hey here's a cool toy, lets engrave this lego minifigure..." I wouldnt let mine near it. An accidental reflection from whatever is being cut would cause permanent retinal scarring if it got into an eye. I doubt if your personal insurance would cover permanent loss of sight in an eye if it occurred due to messing with a cheap laser engraver. If it can engrave plastic it can burn up your retina. 1mW is equivalent to looking at the sun, OK if you glance at it - but not if you stare. 1W?
