Looking for a new laptop and came across this. Hope those in the know on here can advise if a decent deal or not?

Also this for a similar price: http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/lenovo-v110-15isk-80tl-core-i5-6200u-2.3ghz-4gb-128gb-ssd-dvd-rw-15.6-inch-80tl0010uk/version.asp

If neither of these are worth the money, can suitable alternatives please be suggested? Don't mind paying more if worth it, but only really need it for general use. Don't really need high capacity HDD's so was erring towards an SSD. 8GB RAM would be nice too. Probably asking for too much ;-)

This is business model, there is big difference between the business and home models. The overheating is mostly on home "gaming" ones with dedicated graphics, but all the brands are suffering more or less in the same way(different processors and graphics from business models) . I still have HP's which are 7-8 years old and still working perfectly(business models). Also you get Windows 10 Pro with it. I got one for somebody and the quality is quite good for the price.

I avoid HP like the plague. A huge amount of their laptop models have design flaws and will often over heat and fail within 2 years. In fact I used to buy about 10 HP's a week on eBay listed as faulty, just to fix the overheating problems and resell them again. I will never buy one again knowing how bad they are. If you go for the dedicated graphics version, I will give it 18 months lifetime max.

No, this is not a gaming laptop. The website doesn't even mention the graphics GPU so it'll be some on-board thing, maybe Intel HD5000.. You might get away with WOW on on the lowest settings (not sure about DOTA) .. If you want a gaming laptop to play games on mid-night you might be looking at double this price.

This is why the general consumer/public is sheep not getting at you but its not the resolution as much as the panel but consumers just see bigger numbers as being better not the build quality

I was shocked recently when my 5 year old (used at the time) monitor which was a cheap brand outdid my new branded monitor.

if you look back the first mention of apple seems to be from a windows fanboy. all i was adding is there is more to a laptop then just spec like customer service. find me another company that will replace a mother board for free 4 years after the warranty has ended.
Also i am reading this thread because i am looking for 2 cheap laptops for christmas gifts. hence why i am looking at this windows thread
Has anyone seen any reviews for the V110 ? i can find very little info on it seems to be marketed as a business laptop in the us

I'm not an Apple fanboy. I'm just trying to explain that a £350 Lenovo laptop (or any Windows laptop below £900) will not compare to the new MacBook. People seem to become so angry when others don't agree with them - it's technology for heaven's sake! This is great deal for what it is and most people would be fine with it but saying it's on the same level as a MacBook? No way.
Spod

Yawn - Apple fanboys trying to justify insanely high prices on a Windows laptop thread, as usual. Dull, dull, boring, boring. If Apple is so great why do they even bother to read the Windows threads?
boomish
8 Nov 16 #76
Lol another anti-apple thread in a post on a Lenovo B50, thats bonkers trying to even compare ..the Lenovo's are cheap workhorses but you get what you pay for..This one doesn't look to bad, but it's based on the same model as some of it's cheapest range, expect poor plastic finish etc..I'd check reviews first. We have some older Lenovo's we look after and they are ok but very cheap finish & slow.
Also remember not all SSD's are the same the new Apple Macbook Pro uses PCIe/NVMe SSD, (latest M.2 tech very expensive) they claim sequential read/write speeds of 3.1Gbps and 2.1Gbps per second, that would be the fastest ever!! As Apple have always lead in the new M.2 memory tech I'm sure it will be fast. The Lenovo in comparison witha standard SATA SSD I guess would be max 300-500 MBps ( a lot slower) , that's still good compared to a normal HD 115-125 MBps..

sellingthings123
7 Nov 16 1 #69
Exactly! Everyone says that Macs are overpriced (which they really can be) but you really cannot complain about the service provided with the cost. AppleCare, updates (lasting speed) and consumer-compatibility (few viruses, lasting years (literally), ease of use and integrated iOS and tvOS ecosystem) is what makes the extra money worth it for Apple computers in the long. Sure that £1750 cost looks ridiculous for an i5 with 8gb ram and 256gb storage, in a few years time it will run circles around today's 12gb ram i7s and still be prepared for the future (USB-C, OLED Touch Bar etc.). The deal I'm commenting on is great, but I'd rather buy one of Apple's Macs that will last me years than get this Lenovo laptop that will require repairs after some years with no little to no support of Lenovo.
padraig61091
7 Nov 16 1 #68
And generally apple are pretty good after the one year service
I had the motherboard on my 2011 Mac replaced a few weeks back for free even though the Mac is way out of warranty same with a 13inch that my girlfriend has that had an issue with the charging circuit was replaced fixed for free even though the Mac was out of warranty

You read it wrong, like most electronics it could technically fail at any time.. SSDs are very reliable and less prone to damage due to accidental knocks as this can quite easily kill a HDD. I believe SSDs have a maximum read/write lifespan but it should far exceed your own usage.
jazzuk777
7 Nov 16 #63
No he didn't say that although SSD fail rates have improved over the years and are more on a par with HDDs nowadays.
jazzuk777
7 Nov 16 #62
CPUBoss doesn't really bear out what you say - there is a difference in performance but a mobile i5 CPU is still fairly capable, the gap isn't nearly as large as your post implies. Ironically some of the older U CPUs are slightly better in some areas than later gnerations!
Disco
7 Nov 16 #61
so you're saying a SSD will never fail, or did I read that wrong?
wrong32
7 Nov 16 #60
It's not about size it's about speed. SSDs use chips, a bit like SD cards and USB sticks, they don't have any moving parts, greatly reduced seek time... resulting in a much, much faster PC.. SSD HDDs are the single greatest improvement brought to computers in recent years.

Obviously if you require up to 1TB disk space you may need to weigh up whats important to you, personally I would never buy a computer without SSD and if I needed more space i'd buy an external drive.

6 Nov 16 #51
And I would never argue otherwise. I have a gen 1 i5, and it is indeed quite decent. But the modern version (both U and M series) is designed for low power consumption, not power, so it is actually just marginally faster. Doing real work on these is always going to be a compromise.

I wonder whether prices are already going up - after all, the laptop market works in USD. I got a similar laptop, but with an AMD CPU, 2 years ago. I don't bother with a DVD ROM, since I have a USB drive for the 3 times that I might need it. HP is a safe bet: good reliability, reasonable specs, affordable prices.

Got a couple of weeks ago new HP 250 G5 for £400 with i5 6200u, 250GB SSD, 8GB RAM, full HD screen from Ebay. Was the same price online in another shop, can't remember the name now. Great specs for good price, but the screen is dull a bit. Going to take out DVD ROM and put my spare 1 TB HDD instead.
dk143
6 Nov 16 2 #44
I've not been able to find that sort of spec around the £400 mark, or am I missing something obvious??
MrPuddington
6 Nov 16 2 #43
Except that this is is an i5-5200U from the U series for ultraportables and tablets, which does not provide the same power as a proper laptop CPU. It is ok for light use, Office, browsing, video, casual games, organising pictures, but not much more.

This laptop is built to a price point, and I would not consider it an especially good deal. I would expect: Full HD touch screen, 8GB of RAM, and at least a 240GB SDD. You might end up paying 50 pounds more, but it does make a big difference.

ashkayuk
6 Nov 16 #30
The link looks like it redirects to another laptop now the Lenovo B50-50 not the Lenovo V110. As far as i can tell the new laptop has 2.20 GHz instead of the 2.30 GHz V110 has And DDR3 SDRAM instead of DDR4 SDRAM as well as the slight design change.

They seem to have totally removed the v110 from the site. I bought mine from https://www.cclonline.com/product/217472/80TL0010UK/Laptops/Lenovo-V110-15-6-inch-Notebook-Core-i5-6200U-2-3GHz-4GB-1x4GB-128GB-SSD-DVD-RW-WLAN-BT-Webcam-Windows-10-Home-64-bit-Intel-HD-Graphics-520-Black/NOT03295/

Would this play FM17 ok? Also what are the hinges like on Lenovo? My current laptop is about 4 yrs old and is a Lenovo G50 and both hinges have gone meaning we have to replace. Seems a common issue on G50s so wondering if common on most Lenovos. Saying that I use a think pad for work and never had an issue but they seem pretty solid.

Plus do you think on Black Friday/cyber Monday there will be a lot better deals so worth waiting till then?

I bought this for £331 from cclonline last week before the price went up to £349.97 a day ago. Feel free to ask me any questions.

So far the cons are its audio isnt the best as its very low because some one thought its a good idea to put the speaker on the bottom of the laptop and its a really huge finger fingerprint magnet.

Let me just add i'm pretty happy with this as its a super fast laptop for that price with SSD, DDR4 and i5 for a great price.
Out of the box with the os and adjust to actual space you get around 100gb with what i wanted installed now i have about 60GB free.
