Thank u for the deep explanation, I will be trying everything you said later.

Both N54L and Gen8 were using the onboard NICs and the same HDDs. N54L was running WHS2011 and Gen8 is running WS2012R2. I will be back after further testing

Which OS are you using?

The fact that it performs better with a single NIC would point to a configuration issue. Unless you have a managed switch, NIC bonding is largely pointless. It's OK if configured for redundancy, but you'll only ever get benefit from it if you concurrently need more than 1gbps (combined) in a single direction to multiple clients simultaneously, with less than 1gbps per client.

Are you using onboard NICs? If you're transcoding, and CPU usage is at 100%, this will affect the performance of the onboard NICs. Especially if there's bonding involved, as this is more computationally expensive (as it's all done in software). Did your 54L have a PCI NIC?

I'd try diagnosing in the following order:

1. Remove bonding - since a single NIC isn't performing as it should, this should be the main focus.
2. Storage - is your storage capable of providing data > 1gbps? The 70MB/s you're getting is awfully close to the transfer speed of some hard drives, so that could be the bottleneck.
3. CPU - try with a standard file copy (via samba, scp, etc...), and keep an eye on the CPU usage during the copy. If you can reach reasonable speeds, the transcoding software/cpu usage is to blame - if not, then it's possible a deeper config issue with the NIC, or a hardware issue.
4. Limit the CPU usage of the transcoder to around 80% - this should leave plenty of resources for everything that uses CPU (onboard NICs/SATA controllers, etc). Do another test to see what your throughput is like.

If that doesn't work, it's going to need much deeper diagnosis unfortunately.

What is the power pull on this I have a nas running about 30-40 watts but its terrible at transcoding. Does this transcode very well like 4k?

The HP microservers tend to be really efficient. My N40L (config above) is connected to my 700VA UPS, rated at 400w. Current UPS load is 20% (80w) with a switch (rated at 13w) attached too.

So with a pretty heavy hardware load, 4VMs running and 12% CPU usage it's using somewhere around 70w.

Yes, for sure it is capable, but I'm having slow network performance... any ideas why? I get ~40MB/s with NICs teamed or ~70MB/s using singular NIC. My old N54L would transfer @ > 100MB/s with mostly all the same equipment and same setup...

Just remember to think about what would happen if the Microserver got stolen if you got burgled again; there goes the evidence.

Ensure you have a cloud storage solution in place for the CCTV data.

I have an n40L and it's been great. So flexible.

Mine has 16gb ram, a dual pci nic, a p410 controller, 4 3tb disks in raid 5, and an ssd (all connected to the p410 via sas). ESXI boots off of an internal USB flash drive, and it runs everything - my router (pfsense), file/media server, backups, iTunes home sharing (windows vm). It handles anything I can throw at it with ease.

To be fair - i had the Microserver n40l - it was less powerful - but my major issue was the noise, power consumption, ease of use. Dont get me wrong i like getting geeky - but the microserver was turning into a little bit of a pain. I ended up selling it and getting a QNAP NAS - ticks all of the boxes and is powerful enough for multiple stream transcoding.
BUT - at this price - its very tempting. I would probably buy this for an ad-hoc back up system, but getting it up and running wont be for the faint hearted.

I've got N40L + additional 2GB of ram + 3x500GB +250GB unused disks for £50. Changed the case and psu coolers to silent ones. Space is not an issue for now. Running RAID 5. + Managed to stick in 2x2"5 drives under the cd rom for video cache + 16GB ssd for system drive. FreeNAS running on mirrored 16GB usb sticks. Works like a charm for me. Are you saying that power consumption is high? How high compared to others?

5 Dec 16 2 #27
Free - aren't you paying for a usenet feed then?

These are great as plex servers - enough CPU to transcode, as previous microservers struggled.

I do the same but use Windows 10 and setup xpenology in hyper-v use kodi and stream all hd content I didn't want to turn my computer into a box that just sits there so use Internet on the TV etc. only problem with these servers are if you add graphics card they get louder if they don't like your hard drives they get louder so I have retired mine because I couldn't get an easy route to the loft so I didn't have to suffer the noise it makes which you have no proper control over. my problem was two 3tb hard drives always running at 45c it raised the fan speed.

Just saying, 123movies is 1) illegal 2) really easily tracked by the looks of it and 3) rubbish quality. Downloading movies through other methods can fix points 2 and 3 at least. Buying blurays and storing copies of them on your server or wherever else takes care of point 1.

Anyway, the CCTV cameras are creating a video feed but they have no storage of their own. You still need somewhere to store that feed if you want to look at it later, and that's where the server would come in. Given how weird some CCTV systems can be (finding two that work together out of the box is unlikely) you'd be best off with a full blown server like this as you'll probably need the device's flexibility.
barrel24
25 Nov 16 1 #22
The cctv basically records your cameras to the server. And as for the movies that's what I use it for as how it's set up it's basically a free Netflix personalised for me. You can also set up an auto sync feature so if you save a file it is automatically backed up. Personally it depends what you prefer. Synology (only a nas but full synology support) hp server (can be used for a lot more things but only support is online forums). May be a bit geeky but its nice saying you have your own server lol.
barrel24
24 Nov 16 2 #20
Honestly I do not regret buying my hp microserver. It is simple to set up and install xpenology (synology software for hp) and as it is a server it can do a lot whereas a synology is just a nas. My server is set up to automatically download new episodes of whatever show through showrss.info and automatically downloads the films I want using couch potato then I can watch it at my leisure through plex. It's a fantastic system. You can use it for cctv. A web server. Anything really oh and if you want to upgrade storage in future it's simple using synology hybrid raid.

This or a Synology ?
richwest to flashjmp
24 Nov 16 #18
Depends on your needs. This has more processing power and RAM and is cheaper than a 4 bay Synology. Would be better as a Plex server for example, since it has more power to transcode. However you also have to install an operating system and manage all the software yourself.

A Synology unit would be a bit smaller, quieter, lower power consumption, and come with their DSM software. That's relatively idiot proof and includes packages for most typical tasks. It would be less admin/hassle provided that the functionality you want from it is within the capabilities of Synology's apps.

It needs setting up by connecting to a monitor keyboard and mouse. but once it's setup you can just connect power and network cable. I used Server 2012 r2 installed on a SSD and have 4x 1tb hard drives in a Raid 1+0 setup. Ive then upgraded the ram to 16gb and cpu to e3-1260l Quad core.
