Hi I wanted to know the light is 9 watt but if I dim it to 50% will it be consuming 4.5 watt?

Also does it use any power while it is on standby?

I have bought the bulb, but I just use it in the hall; for when we go out and there are no lights on, I can just switch it on at the wall and using the app turn it off and if I'm out when it goes dark, I can put the light on. It was more for my wife really, so she felt a bit more safe, when coming home to an empty house. I'm thinking of buying another one or the plug. I have the Hive system from British Gas.

I've played around calling the Hive API using a chrome add in and hacked a dash button and detected the ARP request on the network but haven't hooked up the two yet. You't need something like a PI zero that's always on on the network to hook the two together, probably with a little bit of python code. Hive is also on IFTTT and Alexa so other events could be utilised to control the lights, plugs heating etc.

Now that interests me! Have you tried it?

Haha sorry. You seemed to be struggling with why smart switches aren't more widespread. Using a hacked amazon dash button and calling the hive (alertme) API you could quite easily build a 'smart switch' for hive if you wanted to

Come on man, there's no need for LMGTFYs.. I know smart switches exist, but not "Hive" smart switches.

These are slightly cheaper at £13.33 in Argos if you're prepared to wait 5 days or your store has them in stock.

It's purely cost and that a "regular person" wouldn't have a clue how to replace a light switch. Smart switches are available if you want some!

Yes, I'm suspect so. Right now I'm struggling to understand why smart bulbs are plentiful but smart switches are not. The latter solves the problem while the former, I'm very sure, would cause inconvenience and frustration (certainly in our house anyway!).

Smart switches are the solution, but they would need installation I guess.

I think smart switches are definitely the solution, and really it's what Hive should have launched, rather than smart bulbs. It's like they haven't thought it through.

It is a flaw I agree but the way we use them it doesn't particularly bother us or cause a problem. Unless you have a better idea I guess the only way to solve it is smart switches but the problem with that is most people probably wouldn't want to change the light switches themselves and there would be extra levels of complication with all the different types of switches (single, double, dimmers, sizes, switches in two places for the same light etc.)

Right, thanks for confirming. So if the family turn the light off by flicking the switch, like normal people, the bulb disconnects from Hive and I have no access. Pretty obvious really. Also a pretty obvious flaw in the product. Oh well..

I have Hive Active Heating system in my home. If I replace my living room light bulb with one of these, would it mean that every time the family wanted to turn the light on or off, they'd be forbidden from touching the light switch and, instead, they would have to ask me to turn it on or off using the Hive app on my phone?

Actually, the answer is not binary.

These bulbs are ZigBee HA1.2 compatible. I can confirm they work with Samsung SmartThings (without the Hive Hub); simply add thing, then in the SmartThings IDE change the device type to ZLL Dimmer Bulb, ZLL White Color Temp, ZLL RGBA (depending on model purchased). They will probably also work with other ZigBee HA1.2 compatible home systems. Hue hub does have this, but since I don't own one I can't confirm nor deny whether it is possible to pair these with the Hue hub.

So basically, if the system you use is compatible with ZigBee HA1.2, and can be tweaked to accept these then yes, they're compatible.

The Hive Hub is only required to provide the App/WiFi to ZigBee link. So if you have something that is able to "speak" ZigBee already, then these may just work directly.

Do these really unpair if switched off? Few reviews mention it not ??
