I could have sworn they had WHOLE ducks for £6 a couple of months ago?

Asda did a whole Gressingham duck for a fiver in the summer.

no. they wrap it up to look like a whole duck but it is just a crown but great for doing home made crispy aromatic duck!

Whole Gressingham duck in Sainsburys for £8 standard price atm. Not sure about the crown. But it's easy to cook. Just chuck the whole thing without packaging if you want in the oven for 2hrs, sprinkle bit of salt and just wait a little before serving.

I had one last week, they are not like the Turkey crowns you buy where you only get the crown. This duck crown comes on the whole duck carcase and you can cook in the bag for the most part then cut out the top of the bag to brown and crisp up the crown. Very nice duck, but you end up with a big bag of bones. I ended up with 600g of waste out of the 900g "crown" so for me messy and not very good value.

The bone collector .... I wonder how many animals are lying in your stomach (or should I call graveyard)

Cheaper than 2 duck breasts in most cases and a little bit more meat overall, doesn't dry out as much when cooking when on the bone I found. Very pleased with how it finished up and the simplicity and less mess overall by cooking it in the bag then added the carved duck to beansprouts mixed in with a few other bits and bobs for a meal the other night. Skin crisped up nicely as well.

Alternative is plain boil in water or steam, cool down, add salt to skin and pan fried/grill the breast skin. Then you don't get the beautiful complete roast taste, but then you save cleaning oven grease using your elbow grease.

That reminds me. Due a drake cull or two of mine. Problem is the kids name them which makes it a bit awkward choosing which one to stick in the oven!

Are these tastier than a Mallard? I remember Moorhens were only so-so...

I think they are tastier than mallard. My cat certainly thinks so, he jumped straight into our guests dinner and grabbed a piece of duck off his fork!
