I also do the "stand it behind the driver's seat" trick so I pop the nozzle in quickly while it looks like I'm filling up the car. At the moment I have a people carrier and I can slide the side door open and fill all 5 of 20 litre cans if I'm on the far side of the forecourt.

problem I have is the boot on my car is small so the can has to go on it's side and will then leak/ drip and smell - so I normally put it in the back door behind the drivers seat so it sit's upright - so to fill it I have to put it down on the floor and try to hide it while I fill it - I have had the attendant stop the pump before, they seem very sure that it is not allowed!
anyway might get the 10L so my wife can pick it up rather than getting me to get it out of the car

I get the furthest pump from the forecourt window.

Fuel tanks are not fuel storage containers so are not included in the regulations.

I believe there is an exception for plastic outboard engine fuel tanks, certainly my father has never mentioned having any problem filling up his 22 litre and 10 litre tanks at his local supermarket garage, although I don't think he takes the 22l one to the garage that often as he rarely uses more than half a tank in a trip.

I never have problems filling up 20 litre cans, they are legal. I fill one with premium unleaded most weeks at a Shell station.

I have a 20L can with a spout that you buy separately (machine mart) - which has been good since the last fuel shortages, but they won't let me fill it up now as 10l is the max - but for filling the mower we use a little pump which costs a £1 from ebay (great apart from the drips)

Incidentally Homebase had some a few weeks back but not as cheap as these, assume diy stores were getting a deal from suppliers at the time.

what store ? - I bet the spout costs more than the can - good price for the can

The problem with these is they do not have a spout. OK with a funnel for filling a mower but without a dedicated spout impossible to tip into a car filler.
