It's pretty much exactly the same, no matter if laptop or desktop, as long as you have a SATA port. Basic steps are:

Install Acronis or Reflect (Free). Make a boot disk from within the application, so install it first and make it before doing anything else.
Remove old drive
Install new drive
Boot from the clone disk you made in step 1
Clone the old drive to the new one
Done

There are slight variations, but you'll need some way to have both drives in one system (either via SATA or USB) to clone the stuff across.

Keep us updated mate. I've ordered 2 of these to replace the 2 drives currently in my ASUS ROG G751. It currently has a 128gb SSD and a 1tb HDD. Just want to drag and drop everything onto the replacements but have no idea how to.

Very tempted. The 525GB for £80.49 or the 750GB for £119.98 (BT)? Not much in the price per MB, 15.3p vs 16p. Yes the 750GB at £105 was very good (14p/MB) but that's gone now. Oh which one to go for? The extra space of the 750GB would be useful, but I would still have to sort through my 1TB HDD I have at the moment to fit it all on. Probably would split OS and progs on the SSD and shift all the pictures and video files (from holidays, etc) to a second HDD.
Any arguments to sway me one way or the other?

Crucial MX300 525GB and 1050GB SSD Review
The difference is nuanced, but it appears that a Samsung 850 performs better in benchmarks, but that this isn't that far behind. So in real world application you probably wouldn't notice. The 500GB 850 Evo is £150 on Amazon currently (lowest £110 in June 2016).

Cheers, unfortunately it's a bit hit and miss how long it takes for a comment to be approved on here. Took about 7 hours this time. So I had to go off and do my own research. I think from what I understand the Evos perform better, whilst an average user won't notice a difference, there are certainly areas where Evo will deliver a significant improvement. However at this pricepoint if money is an issue this is a superb buy. For the record those who missed out on 750gb deal, the 525 and 1050 outperform the 750.

New line up of SSDs is expected in January so would explain the aggressive pricing from Crucial. Plus a 2TB version is on the way. Very important point is to update firmware and drivers of your SSD. As Crucial have been able to deliver considerable improvements over updates.

NAND doesn't stay in the channel very long and is priced in dollars.

Ergo, Brexit causing the £->$ to tank means pricing of things like SSDs, RAM is first on the list of items that will shoot up in price.

My daughter asked me a similar question although hers is a newish Asus. I had a look and was surprised to find that there wasn't the traditional "little door" on the back of the laptop where the disk can easily be swapped. I had to open up the entire laptop shell only to find that the existing drive was hardwired to the motherboard. There was luckily an extra bay where the new SSD could be fitted.

This means that the original C: drive could not be cloned and swapped, she now has the same drive she already had with an additional one named D: which suited her fine.

Dell could well be the same so check it out.
ultrak3wl
28 Nov 16 #116
Officially yes but not really. Old style desktop hard drives are quite big, heavy, and fragile therefore need proper mounting hardware. An SSD in comparison is very light and you could just secure it in place with some Velcro or blue tack.
genmaxiu
28 Nov 16 #117
Not sure what are these adapters for, I am using SSD drives for years now with NO adapters. You can have it hooked up to your 3.5in bay with just one screw, no moving parts, no heavy cables, 2.5 to 3.5 adapters - waste of money.
littlejimmy
28 Nov 16 #118
Can confirm that flubit is absolutely useless now - completely avoid is my advice.

Tried using a couple of times over the weekend, even spending 100pts to try and get demands within the hour - Instead of telling me that it's not going to happen and stopping me using my points, they just let me use the points anyway and still haven't come back to me with an offer for some stuff.

Think they need to concentrate less on trying to flog 'elite' accounts and more on doing the 'bread and butter' bare essential stuff they're meant to be doing.

I just got one for me. Perfect timing, Amazon sent me a Toshiba P300 3TB that won't start, so I had to RMA it. And as I was completing the RMA, I see this. Perfect now 2 x SSD and 750GB total capacity. More than enough to run some good games.

I also have an external 4TB drive and a 4TB NAS, I think I'm served with capacity right now .
fishmaster
28 Nov 16 #120
You don't need an adapter. You must reuse the special screw mounts that are screwed in to the side of the existing HDD though. Very easy to change and I'd prefer to do a fresh install by inserting bootable USB and holding down ALT whilst booting to get the boot menu, then you use disk utility to format the drive and continue with the install.

I went for the €97 Spanish deal after missing out (by minutes) on the 750GB offer, then this popped up this morning. After a couple of naughty words were said, I thought **** it and ordered this one as well - from what I've seen, SSD prices will only be going up from here on in, at least for a while, so might as well make the most of the opportunity.

My laptop is only two years old, but I find it incredibly sluggish despite its rather good specs for the time, (i5, 4th gen I think, 4gb ram) so hopefully this SSD does make the big improvement that I have been reading about.

I've recently had loads more delays and cancelled orders from Flubit than before. I suspect they're doing their best to avoid beating sale prices, as full price Amazon demands are going through normally.

I've ordered this with No Rush Delivery and if a great Flubit offer comes through I'll just cancel before despatch. I'm not holding my breath...

28 Nov 16 #146
I find that Flubit are totally useless for anything other than beating "normal" prices which aren't likely to go up significantly or go OOS quickly.

That's before you even consider Flubit vs. Amazon for customer service and general after sales support.

16gb for 32 bit 20gb for 64 bit - That's the minimum requirements. You will still have quite a bit of space.

If they're so cheap, when can't they just sell laptops in the £350 price range with these as standard ... save all the hassle and wastage of removing a a big old technology hard drive and putting this in instead
TomScrut
28 Nov 16 #159
Because they aren't cheap compared to a normal HDD of similar capacity. A 1TB 2.5" HDD (which is a lot for a £350 laptop) can be had for between 40 and 50 quid. This is half the capacity and just under twice the price. Not to mention 1000GB looks better to the unaware than 525GB does. Basically it would turn your £350 laptop into a £400 one. If that is what you are getting at (I would spend £50 extra for less messing about and having to spend £80 on it anyway), then it's a good point, probably because they want to charge a high end price for something with a SSD inside.
matt101101
28 Nov 16 1 #160
Because every penny counts when you're selling £350 laptops, I would imagine.

There's just not the budget to have a 500GB SSD rather than a 1TB HDD without pushing the price of the end product up.
vishy01234
28 Nov 16 1 #161
Yup you've kind of got my drift ... there just seem a lack of good deals out there for cheaper windows laptops with big SSD drives like this one, which surprises me when the price difference is only £30-£40. Just load it onto the end price.

Cheapest to send it back to Amazon ES would be to use parcel2go.com and choose a Asendia as a courier: drop off service for £7.37 including VAT all with tracking, have used it before when my LG G3 broke and no problems sending it back to Amazon ES near Madrid

Well, I'm sure you are reading news. Brexit as in the exit from the EU hasn't happened yet and we haven't even triggered the negotiation process. The Brexit vote however did happen and the anticipation of Brexit is priced in the exchange rate (fact) which affects imports or British products that rely on imports. (The anticipation of Brexit may also affect the mood to invest (plausible assumption))

As far as I know SSDs don't tend to be made in the UK. Hence the SSD prices are not as low as they would have been otherwise (which may also be affected by other factors but any significant exchange rate change will affect the price).

Except his entire point is that we *SHOULD* be experiencing the problems/depression we were told we would be BY NOW but instead essential food and fuel prices are at record lows in historical terms (essentials that are far better prices than a any time in the last few years) and even electricals (much of which are NON essentials and cheaper offerings offer the same or similar performance) are still priced similarly.

The comment that "Brexit hasn't happened yet" that get's 70+ likes doesn't really explain why we are STILL doing better than countries in the EU who are not going to leave.

Without looking at your particular model there aren't many laptops than can have two HDD's running next to each other's so I would hazard a guess at "no, you couldn't" which may or may not be true - but at least it might make you feel like you haven't missed out too much...

Yes, you can. The only issue, which isn't really an issue at all for most people, is that the RAM won't run in dual channel. However, that's no different to your current single 4GB SODIMM, so you won't be losing anything.

Thanks - I chose NTFS and ended up with 488GB, should I have chosen exFAT? I'm a bit out of touch on formats!
matt101101
30 Nov 16 1 #229
NTFS is what I'd use and recommend for an internal drive (mechanical or solid state) in a Windows machine.

488GB sounds about right for a single drive, my RAID 0 set up of two 525GB MX300s came to 978GB, half of which is 489GB. I would assume the extra 1GB is just a result of Windows rounding up to the nearest GB.
jazzuk777
30 Nov 16 #230
That's quite a big chunk of capacity isn't it - 37 "lost" GB. Seems like it ought to be an advertising/trading standards issue.... It's a whole SD card (or my new G4 Plus) worth!
matt101101
1 Dec 16 #231
It's always been this way, at least as far as I'm aware. The one good thing is that it's not a random amount of space that you "lose", how much usable space you end up with for any given advertised capacity can be calculated.

Calculator: http://www.endmemo.com/data/diskcapacity.php

Finally got and installed my drive last night as a test in my old laptop and boy, what a night and day difference!! Tried it by loading Win 7 from scratch and it was up and booting inside 10 minutes. Updates installed fast and went up through the service packs with out a hitch. Took it out and reformatted and installed in my desktop and this time cloned the drive with the Acronis software using in built SATA connections (Took less than 10 minutes for about 100+gb's) and that went surprisingly easy too. My only query now is, I'm considering getting another on of these for my laptop in the future. Once I clone my laptop drive with Win10, will it's "digital keys" be transferred over for if I, say, want to reset the OS?
alrich
2 Dec 16 #233
just got the drive. doesnt seem to be a 9.5mm adapter in the box.Or is it that black plastic spacer/gasket thing?
Do I need to buy a cable to clone my old drive with acronis?

jazzuk777
2 Dec 16 #234
It comes with a 9.5mm adaptor in the box, kind of a rectangular frame thingy
greycounciller
2 Dec 16 #235
I was wondering that. There's a small black plastic ring type thing in the box. As for cloning, I disconnected my DVD drive which has SATA connections and used that.

TheVoice
2 Dec 16 #237
It does state on the back of the box that 1GB equals 1 billion bytes. You're not really losing any space, it's just your OS calculates it differently.
jazzuk777
2 Dec 16 #238
But 1GB doesn't actually equal 1bn bytes though does it? I'm happy enough with it, but given the controversy around advertising broadband speeds and other marketing ploys, I'm surprised this gap between marketing and reality hasn't been picked up on (yet)
TheVoice
3 Dec 16 #239
Yep, it does. Technically it's Windows etc that is wrong because what they represent as a gigabyte is actually a gibibyte.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibibyte

Either way, you're still storing the same actual amount of information regardless of how it's represented.

replaced my 120gb samsung 840 evo and i have to say the difference in performance feels quite noticeable when moving big files or changing multiple files. almost like ssd vs hdd sometimes. where my samsung used to be instantaneous like opening folders on startup, it takes a few seconds to read folders now.

it was still a good deal for a bigger ssd, but if other people are thinking about upgrading to this they might be surprised.

tbh i doubt it will affect people most of the time. my pc still boots just as fast as it used to like within 3-5 seconds and i doubt i will notice any difference gaming, streaming or surfing. which will probably be 90% of the time on my pc.

and maybe i was so surprised because i'm spoilt due to samsung making great ssds. but those were my first impressions after the switch. anyway, i don't regret my purchase at all and won't be returning it.

13 Jan 17 #248
I must have taken it wrong from another thread regarding sales about items might be better price boxing day etc.

In anyway it's wrong to assume item will be same price or less in future as time wasted waiting for a good price is not worth it.

I will instantly buy it at the next decent reduction instead of making assumptions.

I will book time off or something next year for black Friday, I wanted two of these as well. It was my decision to wait and I have no one to blame, sometimes it pays off other times it doesn't.
