I just couldn't understand the question the way you wrote it originally......there was no rudeness intended (or written)! Apologies if it came across that way, I was just trying to expand on what good beers are available.
Both the beers you mention are significantly better than San Miguel, Amstel, etc. Of the two, I prefer Bitburger (just my opinion of course).

Hi. I am a Beer Sommelier and Budvar is the best lager from overseas by far. Tastes more like Pilsner Urquell than anything else. Both Czech, but Budvar total brew time is over 100 days whereas PU is about 30 days. That means a better more rounded taste. FYI - things like fosters etc take a handful of days to brew...different league altogether.

Thanks OP. I know its not *that* much cheaper than cans, but the novelty factor of a modern Watney's Party 7 suckered me in for a Christmas purchase.
Trouble is, the Old Speckled Hen keeps staring at me from the corner of the garage. It might not live to see santa

Budvar (nice drink ice cold) is by far the best deal here-
• a bottle of Budvar is £4.00 a litre
• the 5L keg of Budvar is £2.00 a litre
so half price!
Old Speckled hen
• 440ml cans (x10) £2.05 a litre
• the 5L keg of Old Speckled Hen is £2.00 a litre
So Budvar lovers are gettin a bargain
Old Speckled Hen lovers - not so
just my 2 pence

Wrong. Unless the beer is meant to secondary ferment. From Camra `Brewery-conditioned, or keg, beer has a longer shelf life as it is not a living product. Basically, after the beer has finished fermentation in the brewery and has been conditioned, it is chilled and filtered to remove all the yeast and then it is pasteurised to make it sterile. This is then put in a sealed container, called a keg, ready to be sent to the pub.
The problem is that removing the yeast and ‘killing off' the product through pasteurisation also removes a great deal of the taste and aroma associated with real ale. Because there is no secondary fermentation occurring in the container (i.e keg) in which is held, there is no natural carbonation of the beer so gas either carbon dioxide or a mixture of carbon dioxide and nitrogen has to be added to "fizz up" the beer. This creates an unnaturally fizzy beer rather than the gentle carbonation produced by the slow secondary fermentation in a cask of real ale.`

Are you drunk.
You are aware no gas is ever put into ale? hence why cans and the small cask will have the same effect, how would you think that these are different taste?
Not sure how limited your knowledge is so I want to check that you are aware that pubs use 9gallon firkins and not 5l aluminium casks.
deany76
16 Nov 16#116
Old Speckled Hen does taste better out of the these Kegs but not pub better IMHO also the difference is more noticable in the 1st 60% of these mini Kegs after that they become more like out the can.
The new press button spigot is a definite improvement to my favorite tipple.
Unfortunately the Bury St Edmonds based Green King have zero presence in North Wales from what I can see. Shame.

16 Nov 161#115
Not really sure how many people in here drink these but not alot of you by these comments, It's like saying carling tastes better in a can than out of a barrell in a pub?!!
These are not novelty and the taste is far better than out of cans. If your an ale drinker, Old Speckled Hen out of can or bottle tastes just like the rubbish out of a carling can in comparison to tap at a pub which is so much smoother.
Old speckled hen and ale drinkers down the pub will know the difference. The 50p a can stay at home drinkers will rate this cold.

Hi
I agree.
Old Speckled Hen my favorite the cheapest I can see is the 10 x 440ml cans for £9.00 at Morrisons which is £2.05 a litre
or £1.02 1/2 p for 500ml
This deal at £1.00 for 500ml is 25p a keg cheaper
not worth rushing / queuing for
The only thing with the 440ML is they don't last very long, come to think about it the kegs don't either!
Greene King have just updated the kegs and they are much better now, fair play.
Good spot, heat added.
I'm not too keen on Budvar (I prefer the taste of more whimpy, weaker lagers).
Speckled Hen is also a bit strong but the flavour is lovely. I shall go for one of these.
Thanks for posting.

I don't quite understand the question, but if you want a proper, decent tasting lager/pils from a supermarket look out for Brooklyn Lager (expensive, never on offer), Samuel Adams Boston Lager or Pilsner Urquell. There are some other good ones but they are rarer and not in all supermarkets.
Pomrick to Chapers_23

Budweiser Budvar is a great Czech lager. In a different league to the usual supermarket Carling/Bud/Fosters pish. However I find these kegs end up giving you a lot of froth at the start and very little (if you have any left) the next day.

Of the three I mentioned above only Samuel Adams is brewed under license in the U.K, the other 2 are imported. But even the U.K brewed (Shepherd Neame) Sam Adams is excellent.
You are right about Japanese beers, unfortunately. Pretty much the only way to enjoy one of their better ones is to travel to Japan.

Hey all. Genuine question (not meaning to disrespect the deal  ). The normal price I pay for 4 X 500ml can of Speckled hen is £4.50 (£5 at the most sometime but sometimes £4 too). So that's £1.125 per 500ml. This deal is £1 per 500ml. Its a bit cheaper but nothing I'm going to rush out and buy. Why is this so hot? Genuine question as I suspect people might just like the novelty of a keg, maybe as a Christmas present but in terms of value for money its not really that good. Sorry I feel like a party pooper ;-). Genuinely interested. Thanks!

It's the speckled hen like handpull or is it gassy like it's bottled?

It's imported from Belgium and it's 5%. Picked up a couple at the weekend, each keg comes with 2 'the chalice' glasses, that are great. The whole lot makes a great gift. Says the beer keeps fresh for 30 days once opened. Ideal for storing in the garage or shed where it's cold, and pop to pull a pint. Supposedly a draught experience

Budvar is far better than any of those. Original Bud from Czech republic. At a tenner this is a treat.

I've just been to Morrison and they've just put a display of Stella kegs (5l) and 2 Stella glasses for 18quid......not deal of the day, but get this - it's 5% (might actually be imported - was in a hurry so wasn't able to check).
I stopped buying it when they cloned 4.8, but tempted to drop one of these into the fridge

Where are folks getting the idea that Ghost Ship is also going to be included in this deal?. I can't see any mention of this in the Op and the link just takes you to the search results for "keg". By this logic the Hobgoblin would be in the deal...unless I'm missing something here?.
£2/ltr vs Stella in Asda at £1.52/ltr in 30 handy size mini-kegs that retain freshness through to Christmas

This is the only time the £/ltr drops below or the same as the price for just buying cans/bottles.
I guess you could argue these are more fun if you're easily amused.

Both the beers you mention are significantly better than San Miguel, Amstel, etc. Of the two, I prefer Bitburger (just my opinion of course).

Trouble is, the Old Speckled Hen keeps staring at me from the corner of the garage. It might not live to see santa
Multipacks of cans at £2.05 /l
So not the hugely discounted price I had the impression it was
So you'll forget what a numpty you were with your maths on this thread :stuck_out_tongue:
Good choice there it seems though?
Is it a dispenser bag in a box, I take it?
Is your local a British Legion? £2.30 a pint for "Old Speckled Hen" is amazing
Cheapest round here is £2.80 for "Black Sheep"
• a bottle of Budvar is £4.00 a litre
• the 5L keg of Budvar is £2.00 a litre
so half price!
Old Speckled hen
• 440ml cans (x10) £2.05 a litre
• the 5L keg of Old Speckled Hen is £2.00 a litre
So Budvar lovers are gettin a bargain
Old Speckled Hen lovers - not so
just my 2 pence
ps
The Budvar really does give a 'pub' experience probably my imagination but pours like a local.
The Budvar is the same as the new Old Speckled Hen keg
1/ turn sprigot clockwise and use a spoon to gently prise out sprigot.
2/ press button and fill a large glass till it stops
3/ turn black widget (on top of keg in the centre) clockwise as far as it will go.
4/ press button on sprigot and enjoy
best used within 3 days
hope this helps
How much does this stuff from the keg work out in pints?
Also picked up a keg of Warsteiner from Costco for £11 - you have to pay to be a member but that's a wicked brew
Be warned if you're buying them in advance to use at an event / celebration / whatever, the sell by date will be around April 2017.
Not ales in general
The problem is that removing the yeast and ‘killing off' the product through pasteurisation also removes a great deal of the taste and aroma associated with real ale. Because there is no secondary fermentation occurring in the container (i.e keg) in which is held, there is no natural carbonation of the beer so gas either carbon dioxide or a mixture of carbon dioxide and nitrogen has to be added to "fizz up" the beer. This creates an unnaturally fizzy beer rather than the gentle carbonation produced by the slow secondary fermentation in a cask of real ale.`
Golden hen also.
Hobgoblin also down to £13.
All located on the main aisle at the back of the store around the beer
My point was either way they still taste far better and smoother than the smaller cans or bottles as i Have had these plenty of times in the past and others above agree. Not a novelty, they taste better than the 50p a can.
if its was "That works out to 50p per 500ml can" it would be a fiver a keg and 1984
To confirm the 5L kegs and cans are filled under pressure zero gas so in effect the 5L key is no different to a 500 or 440ML can of "The Hen"
Interesting article:

... can't find it on their website though !

You are aware no gas is ever put into ale? hence why cans and the small cask will have the same effect, how would you think that these are different taste?
Not sure how limited your knowledge is so I want to check that you are aware that pubs use 9gallon firkins and not 5l aluminium casks.
The new press button spigot is a definite improvement to my favorite tipple.
Unfortunately the Bury St Edmonds based Green King have zero presence in North Wales from what I can see. Shame.
The 50p a can stay at home drinkers will rate this cold.
cheers OP.
That is Budvar?
They are by the exit not where the booze is.
I stopped off and treated myself to a Christmas lunch (available from 11.30 to 2.30pm) massive portion and good value for Roast Turkey and all the trimmings - a fiver
4. Slowly turn air release when beer flow diminishes?
Do you do this before, during or after you pour?.
Cheers.
Have they started building the garage at Connah's Quay yet?

I'm not too keen on Budvar (I prefer the taste of more whimpy, weaker lagers).
Speckled Hen is also a bit strong but the flavour is lovely. I shall go for one of these.
Thanks for posting.
Gonna go empty the boot of the car now :smirk:
So off to my local in the morning.

It's chuffin freezin atm!
Chase this with a litre of Jack Daniels Honey @£20 in Sainsbury's & it's a very merry Christmas to one and all!!!
HEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAT!!!!!
Is one of the best premium lagers that you can buy on the shelves.
Nothing like budwieser (thank god!).
It'll last quite a long time. I BELIEVE it's around 5 days?
You can choose to have a small glass or a pint.
If you're having a party, it's easier to dish out in whatever size glasses.
A slight novelty, i'm sure you'll agree!
Probably means you have to consume it quicker, but it does work

Where are they now; Long Life, Double Diamond, Skol, Harp, Ben Truman, etc,. They all deserved to disappear.
and on top of that (IMO), your bottles will taste better.
so then sir, how will you be voting this deal? Hot like the masses or will you be exercising your right to vote by pressing the 'ultra hot' button....
Both the beers you mention are significantly better than San Miguel, Amstel, etc. Of the two, I prefer Bitburger (just my opinion of course).
Cheers.
