It's imported from Belgium and it's 5%. Picked up a couple at the weekend, each keg comes with 2 'the chalice' glasses, that are great. The whole lot makes a great gift. Says the beer keeps fresh for 30 days once opened. Ideal for storing in the garage or shed where it's cold, and pop to pull a pint. Supposedly a draught experience

Hey all. Genuine question (not meaning to disrespect the deal :smiley: ). The normal price I pay for 4 X 500ml can of Speckled hen is £4.50 (£5 at the most sometime but sometimes £4 too). So that's £1.125 per 500ml. This deal is £1 per 500ml. Its a bit cheaper but nothing I'm going to rush out and buy. Why is this so hot? Genuine question as I suspect people might just like the novelty of a keg, maybe as a Christmas present but in terms of value for money its not really that good. Sorry I feel like a party pooper ;-). Keeps in keg for at least a month as sealed until you open the frothy bevy.

Although I see these kegs in the shops I never see any kind of thingy to get the beer out. I take it that there's some kind of tap or something ?

Once you've emptied the keg they are really easy to reuse for those folk that dabble in homebrew!

Old Speckled Hen my favorite the cheapest I can see is the 10 x 440ml cans for £9.00 at Morrisons which is £2.05 a litre
or £1.02 1/2 p for 500ml
This deal at £1.00 for 500ml is 25p a keg cheaper

The only thing with the 440ML is they don't last very long, come to think about it the kegs don't either!

Not really sure how many people in here drink these but not alot of you by these comments, It's like saying carling tastes better in a can than out of a barrell in a pub?!!

These are not novelty and the taste is far better than out of cans. If your an ale drinker, Old Speckled Hen out of can or bottle tastes just like the rubbish out of a carling can in comparison to tap at a pub which is so much smoother.

Old speckled hen and ale drinkers down the pub will know the difference. The 50p a can stay at home drinkers will rate this cold.

Old Speckled Hen does taste better out of the these Kegs but not pub better IMHO also the difference is more noticable in the 1st 60% of these mini Kegs after that they become more like out the can.

The new press button spigot is a definite improvement to my favorite tipple.

Unfortunately the Bury St Edmonds based Green King have zero presence in North Wales from what I can see. Shame.

Not sure how limited your knowledge is so I want to check that you are aware that pubs use 9gallon firkins and not 5l aluminium casks.

I picked up a couple of Budvar in the MK, Leisure Plaza store first thing this morning. They has a display area just as you enter the store and none on the shelf except the Old Speckled Hen which was still showing £15, although that and Old Golden Hen were a tenner on the display. They had approx. 8 of each on display and the Budvar had use before date of April 2017 if any will last until then :smile: It clearly said MAX 2 PER CUSTOMER on the signage too.

To confirm the 5L kegs and cans are filled under pressure zero gas so in effect the 5L key is no different to a 500 or 440ML can of "The Hen"

Wrong. Unless the beer is meant to secondary ferment. From Camra `Brewery-conditioned, or keg, beer has a longer shelf life as it is not a living product. Basically, after the beer has finished fermentation in the brewery and has been conditioned, it is chilled and filtered to remove all the yeast and then it is pasteurised to make it sterile. This is then put in a sealed container, called a keg, ready to be sent to the pub.

The problem is that removing the yeast and ‘killing off' the product through pasteurisation also removes a great deal of the taste and aroma associated with real ale. Because there is no secondary fermentation occurring in the container (i.e keg) in which is held, there is no natural carbonation of the beer so gas either carbon dioxide or a mixture of carbon dioxide and nitrogen has to be added to "fizz up" the beer. This creates an unnaturally fizzy beer rather than the gentle carbonation produced by the slow secondary fermentation in a cask of real ale.`

1/ turn sprigot clockwise and use a spoon to gently prise out sprigot.
2/ press button and fill a large glass till it stops
3/ turn black widget (on top of keg in the centre) clockwise as far as it will go.

Hi. I am a Beer Sommelier and Budvar is the best lager from overseas by far. Tastes more like Pilsner Urquell than anything else. Both Czech, but Budvar total brew time is over 100 days whereas PU is about 30 days. That means a better more rounded taste. FYI - things like fosters etc take a handful of days to brew...different league altogether.
