At this price it's acceptable. The question is how upgradeable is it? Is RAM and the hard drive easily accessible for upgrading?

Edit: 2 cell battery and "up to 4 hour" battery life, ouch.

Why on earth don't they put an SSD in these things... my 2010 i7 FHD Vaio absolutely flies with an SSD about 10 times quicker! thanks op though

Why is it acceptable, I see no reason for it to be, machine arrives immediately needing a (potentially fiddly) £30-£50 upgrade that will make it 10 times snappier. Crazy.

30-50 if its just a casual internet cruiser, but a lot of people store photos and other crap. For a decent sized SSD its nearly as much as the laptop.

That said i wouldnt use a machine without an SSD :P

As someone that hasn't been that interested in laptops for a while, how bad is a 5th gen i5 paired with an SSD in this day and age? Was about to buy this until I read your comment haha

Anyone know if currys have any activce codes that can be used to bring this price down alittle? Was able to pick up a HP i3 from JL on black friday last year for £199...was hoping to pick up another i3/i5 for around the £250-£275 mark...havent seen many good deals on laptops under £300 so far this year.....

Replace the DVD drive with a HDD caddy and stick the 1TB mechanical drive in there for mass storage, then put a 240GB SSD where the 1TB mechanical drive was originally located and put your main programmes and OS on there.

Bought this a year ago for £250. This version here has slightly better processor and double memory.
Came with Windows 8, but was free upgraded to Windows 10.
Do not buy this, awful, awful performance on Windows 10, HD usage at 100% nearly all the time. Booting up and loading all programs takes 5 minutes, literally.
Looking to replace this year with a laptop with an SSD and giving this to parents.
Should now be a crime to not have SSD drive for laptops.
For info my screen is not 1080p, my model is X555L.. so make sure before you buy.
matt101101
24 Nov 16 #33
It'll be fine, Intel's CPU's haven't had a big generational performance upgrade since the move from the 1st to 2nd gen. i3/i5/i7. That's not to say that you wouldn't notice moving from a 2nd to 6th gen. CPU, but the jump from one gen. to the next is pretty insignificant for day to day usage.

hi guys, thanks for the heads up. Looking to get a laptop for my 12 year old son. I've put this in my basket. Can anyone please tell me, as long as I have it in basket I can pay anytime? Only just want to see if I can find a better Black Friday deal later. Thanks all
matt101101 to markbigears
24 Nov 16 #40
Keeping it in your basket doesn't guarantee you this price, nor does it reserve you a unit should they go out of stock.

If the price changes (up or down), the price in your basket will change and if they go OOS, you still won't be able to buy one.

Umm, why don't you just install an SSD in the existing machine?

Seems like that'll solve your issue although it does sound like you've got a rogue application hammering the hard drive. Nothing a factory reset won't solve. Probably best to do both at the same time. Upgrade and reset.

Sound advice. ^^^

On a vaguely related note, I do wonder how many laptops get chucked out/retired to the back of a cupboard each year when actually an OS reinstall (super easy with W10) and an £50 SSD would make them far faster than the day they left the factory and good day to day machines for years to come...

Personally, I'd say that a 1080p display is worth £80 (with the code people have mentioned) as it makes every task far more pleasant to perform and the faster CPU is the cherry on top.

I bought this (over Dell) for my 8 year old for pretty much the same purpose - minecraft in specific. Either would do the job IMHO. But the difference of 80 GBP for the display and i5 processor sold this to me.

Doesn't the Dell £199 laptop have a 7 gen. i3 processor? Is the i3 still no better than this 5th gen i5?

Can anyone clarify please?
matt101101
24 Nov 16 1 #73
Which I doubt you'd notice in day to day use, unless you spend a lot of time maxing out the CPU on your laptop. In which case, I'd recommend getting something with far more power than either a 5200u or a 6200u as both are still only dual-core HT chips despite their i5 branding.

It is FHD 1920x1080, not only does the Curry's spec say so (false advertising if it wasn't)

But also this

"ASUS X Series laptops can be specced up to a Full HD (1920x 1080) resolution display."

24 Nov 16 1 #83
The Dell deal is for an i3-5005U processor, so no it isn't a 7th Gen I'm afraid. The i3 is still not a bad processor for a laptop unless you intend to play online games or do video editing and the like.

matt101101
24 Nov 16 #86
If the laptop's already had W10 installed on it, it shouldn't need any manual activation once you install it on an SSD. W10 is meant to be clever enough to reactivate itself if the same version is installed on a system which has already had an activated copy of W10 installed on it in the past.

Looks like this has been the best deal so far over black friday sales....£279 price (with the now expired code). The only cheaper deals I could find were only £20-£30 cheaper and those deals were for slower processors (i3's) and without full HD screens so this really was an excellent buy for all those that grabbed one before they sold out.

Yes, it would be better to charge an extra 50 pounds and supply a 240 GB SDD. But it is still a good deal, and if you upgrade, you will end up with an impressive laptop at an excellent price.

Of course there are compromises: the battery, the webcam, and the HDD. And indeed I would not recommend buying it if you do not plan to upgrade the HDD.

Can anyone compare this one with this from John Lewis. I know this is not on offer but I was going to buy the 3 year warranty anyway so with this 3 year warranty already included it's pretty much same price. What you guys think?

Thanks for sharing OP.

Just bought one 5 mins ago. None in local area but selected store 40 mile away and then given the option to transfer to store 12 miles away.

Over the moon with this as the Dell was a no goer and a lot of the sub £300 stuff looked a lot worse.

This will run both games absolutely fine.

You can use Microsoft Office Online for free, but it's quite limited. There are free office suites available (LibreOffice being generally seen as the best of the bunch), although there are occasionally formatting issues if you're sending to someone who's using Microsoft Office.

John Lewis customer service is definitely worth paying extra for. Cheap laptops tend to have a higher failure rate, from experience.

Like many others I tried the Dell deal last night and was disappointed. Reverted to this deal but found I couldn't get home delivery and no stores in the NE held stock. Tried the John Lewis deal this morning http://www.johnlewis.com/lenovo-ideapad-310-laptop-intel-core-i3-8gb-ram-1tb-15-6-/p2901213?colour=Silver which showed all oos. Rang John Lewis a few minutes ago and spoke to a lovely lady who gave me the choice of silver or red models. Have ordered the red and will pick up from my local store tomorrow. Like the idea of JL 2 year guarantee and believe I would get better service than Currys. As for Dell, I think they've only succeeded in rubbing people up the wrong way

That'll probably be for 12 months? Whether that's good value depends on your usage. If you need Microsoft Office, then it's a good deal I think. If you don't, LibreOffice should handle most situations just fine.

My main irritation with the ASUS laptops are the giant touchpad which seem to delete 12 hr essays by the briefest accidental stroke. At least its like that on my Asus X54 (from Currys) bought in 2013. You need a holistic review of the device, the touchpad thing has driven me crazy and I didn't even consider it, by buying on the specs.

But for all the speedfreaks out there - adding a SSD is what I have done with my old Asus x54 i3 laptop and its now fast as greased lightening. Bought a caddy for £5 from ebay, and swapped out the CDRW for a Sandisk 512Mb SSD in the caddy. There is an instructables guide on how to do it. Now have a 750Gb drive for data and the SSD for OS/Programs. Programs like MS word etc...load in 1-2 seconds.
Only things like Handbrake (video compression to mp4) are slow and I can just use my main PC for that. (But usually don't bother and leave it to compress in background for 4-5 hours instead of 40mins on the main PC).
biglugs1
25 Nov 16 #182
I have Asus, HP and Sony laptops (not made any more unfortunately) and I am very happy with the quality of the Asus one - more robust than the HP one which is now dead (motherboard failure) after just 17 months, but not as good as the old Sony one.
The JL deal is for an i7 processor but doesn't say which one - probably an i7-6500, but you should check before you buy. Not a bad price considering it comes with a 3 year warranty.

I have to agree with this. I have a Toshiba Satelite Pro that has been returned now 3 times (currently in for DAMAGE (bad scratches and bent chassis) caused by the repairer during the second repair which was incidentally the same first fault they never fixed. I have raised complaints on Twitter in a hope they just do the right thing and replace it this time. What a headache!

It's the Office 365 5 licence /1 year, and £39.99 is a good price for that (list is about £70 IIRC, best online prices seem to be about £45-50). Note after 1 year the license expires and you would need to purchase another one.

We use it here (on a few machines) and I think it's pretty good value (extras like 1TB One drive, skype minutes etc., see the ms office 365 website). Never liked Libre Office as much myself. so guess horses for courses.

As pointed out already but seemingly ignored by many the Lenovo 510 with the i3 is more powerful than this i5 and a better deal in my opinion. The i3 benchmark is noticeably higher compared to the i5 in this deal.

Just had e-mail from Curry's....my order already dispatched and on its way for home delivery! Thanks again all...£279 for a i5, full hd screen, 8gb and 1tb is an excellent deal. Think I would have purchased 2 if they were that price! I picked up an HP i3 (4005?) from JL last black friday for £199. So seemed a good deal as got full HD screen, i5 processor and 8GB for £70 more, which seems pretty good value.... cheers!

Sp0oner....thanks for your comments. I'm no expert (Google is my friend! but the only real noticeable difference might be the HD 520 graphics core in the i3 6th Gen....if you not a gamer and neither laptop would really be classed as a gaming pc/laptop, you would see very little difference...in fact benchmarks seem to show that multitasking and single core performance the i5 is better for day to day stuff...which is really what this is for. You could argue that most would find it better value to spend £30 more on this than the Lenovo 310 (the 510 model seems to cost alot more) for a full hd screen and a processor that is better at multitasking...both seem excellent deals tho.

I'm talking about the Lenovo 510 on offer at £299 with the fhd screen. The i3 in that has a cpubenchmark of 3920 where as the i5 in this deal has a cpubenchmark of only 3478.

25 Nov 16 #200
thanks....hadnt seen that deal. Seems like a good one as well. Guess the choice is 12% extra cpu performance or an extra 4gb of ram!
Sp0oner
25 Nov 16 #201
I'd take the better cpu and upgrade the ram which doesn't cost much.
UKlions1
25 Nov 16 #202
Cant argue with that Sp0oner. I agree...that makes the most sense! I'm not a fan of Lenovo tho and as the laptop isnt going to be used for graphic intensive games and not going to be upgraded, the extra 4GB of ram to help with multitasking made that the better deal for me but like with everything... It comes down to the user and what you need it for.... If this is just for youtube, word, Office and itunes etc then the average user wont see any difference between the i3 6th gen or the i5 5200u......thanks
tightpants
25 Nov 16 #203
The other difference is the Lenovo 510 has an IPS panel - makes a difference to viewing over TN ones. Especially at this price point.
UKlions1
25 Nov 16 #204
Thanks......is the Asus LED backlit?
tightpants
25 Nov 16 #205
I Haven't seen anything to confirm it is/isn't. Lenovo 510 is definitely back lit and has Caps/Numbers lock lights on keys.
Sp0oner
25 Nov 16 #206
Plus the 510 had a DVD drive which has its uses despite being seen as out of date tech plus you could pull it and replace with an hd caddy and stick in an ssd whilst keeping the 1tb hdd or swap out for a bluray drive to make use of the fhd ips screen.

ASUS definitely, upgrading ram and to ssd will make a huge difference, plus its better looking and better specd than the Lenovo with weird keyboard and Dell.
I have a Vaio with 2014 i5 cpu and hd3000 graphics, after upgrading the ram to 16gb, its pretty much flies now for things like ANSYS cfd simulations which are usually heavy on CPU and GPU. The same simulations arent that much faster on my i7, GTX680 PC.
AMD's usually look better on paper but in real world, they usually lag behind Intel.

I was one of those 200+, I was shocked that I did not even get a call or e-mail to say it wasn't in stock. After calling them today they offered to replace with laptop of similar value £300 + 10%. Went for the Lenovo deal instead and they knocked 10% off that

I'm absolutely furious! I helped my Mam and Dad decide this deal after months of researching, and they got a confirmation email and a predicated date for collection. It was around 7.45am on Black Friday they ordered. THEN they go to collect it today, as that was when they were told it'd be available.....to be told there was not enough and wouldn't be any more! What a waste of time and absolute farce.

That's not good service at all. Especially when order or reservation was placed this early. The stock was available and about half eight it kept going in and out on currys but pc world was showing stock.

I took too long to make my mind and then it was gone, at one point at checkout It was removed from my basket.

They should have offered you some discount of an alternative since its currys error.
