Not great, get a proper kindle if you read a lot. Better for your eyes, lighter and much longer battery life. Just bought my daughter the 6 inch one for £56.99 and it is excellent.

Does this one have "Special Offers"
The Amazon price match one does
"Special offers and sponsored screensavers display when your device is in sleep mode"
There is no mention of special offers on the PC World page as far as I can see

Fire 7" is older and significantly lower spec than the Fire 6 HD, right?
Rickardo to TehJumpingJawa
23 Nov 16 #19
No, this 7" is newer, but lower spec. There used to be an HD7, which was older!

Comparison video (or go on Amazon and they have a full comparison table for all Fire tablets, even on the app):
https://youtu.be/gmXVVd7o9X0
dearley1231 to TehJumpingJawa
23 Nov 16 #23
The 7" Fire has quad core A7 processor which is like four low power cores versus the Fire 6 HD's quad core processor of two high performance A15 and two low power A7s. Therefore the Fire 6 HD has the better processor but I am buying the 7" because my Nvidia Tegra 4 Note (4 x A15) has stopped charging after about 2 years. That tablet had 1GB RAM too and struggled with some webpages but was generally okay. The difference would be noticeable at times so I would choose the 6 HD if the price was right and you're okay with the smaller screen.
winstonmanc to TehJumpingJawa
23 Nov 16 #34
No. The Fire 7" has a lower spec, but I wouldn't say it is significantly lower.

How do these compare with the gen 1 nexus 7?
Rockingtheboat to Fatal1ty

Do not buy a first gen nexus. My one although bought when it first came out now has so much lag it feels like working in slow motion

Some of their tablets had a feature that could read Kindle ones out to you. I know there were limited models and I think they've stopped that now.

Does anyone have one and can confirm this can successfully play Pokemon Go? Tried browsing the web and couldn't find definitive answer
Rickardo to JJBDude
23 Nov 16 #20
Pokemon wasn't in the Amazon App Store when I last checked, but Google Play store can easily be added (which also removes the not-that-obtrusive special offer ads on the lock screen). Check the other Fire 7 posts for link to tutorial.
gazman090970 to JJBDude
23 Nov 16 #32
Couldn't get it to work on a 5th gen i was able to sideload it and install but at the point where you choose your first pokemon when throwing the pokeballs it would never target so you can't progress past that point.£29.99 is a decent price but i can say the quality is not even close to the 1st gen fire hd it is one solid tablet especially the toughened screen these newer generation screens do not take much abuse.
Rickardo
23 Nov 16 1 #22
As Amazon owns Audible, it wants you to use (read, pay) that!

23 Nov 16 #24
Maybe he already has a first generation Nexus and wants to know if it's worth the upgrade... As do I. Agreed with the lag though it's pretty bad now to the point of being unusable

fishmaster
23 Nov 16 #44
This can be achieved on any Android device that can run Twilight and similar apps.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.urbandroid.lux&hl=en_GB

Blue Light affects Melatonin production which means that it's harder to sleep for many people if they've been looking at screens emitting colour temperatures that affect Melatonin production later in the evening. Changing the colour temperature using an app that does this automatically based on sunset/sunrise is supposed to help. Apple also have this built in to their IOS system since version IOS9, the feature is called Night Shift.

is it worth waiting to see if fire HD 8" goes down in price? is it better than the 7"

That's what I'm torn over.
Ideally I'd like sth with a bigger screen hence if hd8 or another bigger screen tablet drops tomorrow I'll be kicking myself at getting the HD 7" on the other hand if I don't get this and nothing drops (to a good price) I'll kick myself for missing out on this deal....

It's a shame that this Fire is loaded with all the unnecessary Amazon apps which you can't remove without rooting, but it's not hard to throw them all in a folder and hide it away somewhere.

It was easy enough to get the Play Store on it, and so far it seems like an OK device for £30...

Not impressed with these. I bought one last year, obviously might be slightly different to this years version but on Black Friday deals, for a child of mine, had chew with it, Amazon sent me a replacement but children's edition which had some free content on or something. The adverts are only on the lock screen, it's not like they randomly pop-up when you're watching a film or browsing.

I don't really think it's worth the hassle/risk.
MrPuddington
24 Nov 16 #97
Not really. The screen resolution is too low, the backlight too bright, so it is best for consuming videos.

Even games are tricky, because the Amazon Store is quite barren compared to the Google Store (which is not available on this device).

Still, can't beat the price.

JDavies
26 Nov 16 1 #144
Personally, for the sake of a tenner I would go for the 16gb. However, both are expandable to 200gb, so it really doesn't make too much of a difference.
Daz555
29 Nov 16 #145
Yes you can. 5.1.3 can be rooted and you can install custom roms like CM12. Get yourself over to XDA for everything you need. http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire

If you want to mod do not let it connect to your home network and autoupdate. Keep aeroplane mode on until you have at least rooted and blocked OTA updates.

I bought 2 from John Lewis both running v5.1.1 - I have rooted, blocked OTA updates, removed ads, and installed Play Store. That is all I need for now.
TheOak
29 Nov 16 #146
wonderful answer, thank you. Only issue being it HAS OTA updated to 5.3.2 i think. I did the hack to install google play and block ota but it seems the later didnt work...
