A refurbished model sold by amazon with full amazon guarantee is £228.29 after the £50 discount on amazon warehouse items mentioned in an earlier post.

It's been this price twice so far, once in August and then in September. Seems like at the end of every month they dip the price down to £299, this time they've delayed it for "black Friday sales".

Battery life is only 4 hours and it's difficult to find up to date reviews on it (There's at least 4-5 models with the exact same name but different specs). RAM is also DDR3 and the laptop is quite heavy at 2.8kg.

Decent deal, but considering it's been this price several times before I wouldn't call it special or a must buy. Will keep on waiting and see what other deals "Black Friday" throws up.

Maybe to save on battery life? Maybe so that the system runs faster, considering the CPUs are usually quite weak? Maybe just because most laptops are budget tier and the creators need to cut corners somehow.

I haven't got a clue. Would be interested in finding out.

Also interested in finding out why laptops full stop are so expensive. Don't feel like the item justifies the price most of the time.

Notice how they keep the resolution a secret? that is because it is 1366 x 768 and not full HD.

Miniaturization and R&D means laptops are more than the cost of all the individual parts. When you buy a desktop (broadly speaking) the components are all interchangeable, in a laptop the mainboard, cooling system, chassis and other bits are engineered for just that one machine so the cost of design goes up a lot because you don't get such good economies of scale.

When working with spreadsheets or high detail photographs. So much so that I have chosen older/slower laptops with high resolutions displays over newer ones with low-res ones. 4K is just an evolution of this, I would choose one of those panels if I could over a standard FHD one.

Disagree. An old i3 with 4gb ram and an SSD will 'feel' quicker booting up, loading apps, saving etc than a kaby lake i7 with 64gb ram and a 2 billion terrabyte hard drive. If you don't feel comfortable opening your laptop up and reinstalling windows, then get a laptop with an SSD. I find it agonising to use a HD based machine now, even if its only 20 seconds as you say. Plus you'll get extra battery life, and if you drop the laptop you're unlikely to lose any data.

Yes well, using your car analogy people should also understand the economics behind it. 768p HD screens are fine for basic use for most people, there are options for the better displays but they are usually more than the sum of parts - just as that premium satnav in a BMW doesn't actually cost £2k but it does in the options sheet. And it's the same reason why some basic cars still come with steel wheels and trims not alloys. The upsell is where these companies make their money, not the low end stuff but they have to provide for the low end or they get forced out.

​yes i agree an intel i5 is good enough to run a full hd screen all day long.
the point i was trying to make is that manufacturers tend to make high end laptops and cheaper laptops.
a basic laptop wont have a Nvidia gpu where as a high end one will.
just like a car, if they put a powerful engine in..... the leather seats and big wheels usually come along with the package ?
you rarely get a big powerful engine in a basic model car.

It's the trying to wade through them to find a genuine deal that is annoying - there really are a LOT of them and on search results I'm seeing the dodgy ones, not even the Amazon ones

Anyone else getting annoyed by the floods of "just launched" sellers selling laptops at suspicious prices - they even seem to be showing in searches ahead of actual Amazon fulfilled items

the screen resolution isnt just determined by the screen , its a number of things.
if they put a full hd screen in a laptop then they have to fit a better GPU to run it, then they have to fit a higher spec motherboard/chipset to run the GPU ?
all of those things push the price up from a budget £300 laptop to a £500+ laptop.

Sorry they're all gone but if there are any they are always listed below the price where it says new and used from. I always try to get a warehouse deal if I can and try to get one with only the packaging may be damaged it's normally a customer return and i have never had an issue with my purchases ranging from little tikes cosy coupes to a chromebook and everything in between and as the other amazon post stated there was an extra £50 off a £200 spend. Most products sold on amazon have warehouse down below on the normal amazon product page.

You're right. Vendors do not have much of an incentive to move to be honest. Having a 3-tiered offer (720, FHD and FHD+) allows them to maximise their profits and display panel makers to utilise as much of their existing infrastructure as possible before eventually having to replace old machinery.

Although for many users the screen will be more than adequate, the specs don't tell the full story in terms of usability. It looks like the same keyboard I have on my lenovo laptop, and that is really frustrating. The keys are far smaller than they need to be (accepting that 1% of the population might really need a number pad on a keyboard, these are smaller than many keyboards that also have that feature). The shift key and up arrow are next to each other, which is a real pain, especially for left handed people who use the right hand shift key. It's well worth trying one out in a shop before you buy.

Guys is the screen thing a real deal breaker or acceptable?....its not big issue for me ( i think!) & keen to sort a laptop in Black Friday...

Overkill is the answer. It taxes laptop batteries and content on laptops is almost never tuned for 4K resolution. Plus those damn 4K displays are expensive on laptops (the Lenovo 910 has one if you really want one) and even the ones on smartphones are not that cheap.

I am pretty sure i5-5200U is Intel HD 5500, which does support 1080p but screen is shockingly bad
Got excited a little at the spec, but res killed the deal, no wonder they push them at a "massive discount" price, which seems to work for most people that haven't got much of a clue :smiley:
